•reel Dr. Forbes Winslow, Dr. Hammond and
other physicians have noticed an Increase in tbe
number and intensity of bellncinations of inmne
patients, or persons suffering from delinnm
tremens, as soon as they assume the recumbent
poaition. These patients have been found to
hleen quietly for koido time io fiD itrin chair,
l,ol to be annoyed by ballaeinaUons ns soon as
they lie down. .1- Certain substances used as
medicine or food. Tbe cliief agents of tbU
dam are alcabol, tea—especially strong green
tea—ooffea, opium, belladomm, stramonium,
and Indian bemp or hashish. Opium m srnali
dosea ia often cepeeiaUy potent in indntrfng
wakefulness. A single dose of half a grain baa
been known to keep a patient awake for three
oonseentive nights. All the so-called naroocticn,
in small doses, induce wskcfnlneas rather than
sleep. 4. To tho above, Dr. Hammond adds a
fonnh eiciting cause of insomnia—namely,
functional derangement of certain organa of
tba body, whereby an increase in the amount
of blood in the brain is prodnoed. As, how
ever, snob esses as these are beyond tbe con*
trol of the sufferer, we need not discuss
them here. In ail those esses of wakefnl-
nom dependent upon severe and long con
tinuous mental exertion—and these arc the
case* to which wo especially wish to draw the
attention of our readers—all moans of relief
will be utterly usclosa nntil iho patient consents
to give his brain entire relaxation for a time.
Whenever it is poraible, a course of travel
through a romanlio country, or a visit lo tho
seaside, should l» regarded as imperative. An
early dinner, followed by a hearty sapper of
plain and nutritions dishes, is preferable to a
heavy, late dinner: nnd n gl»ss or two of good
win* at both meals, or s glass of good whisky
or brandy and water a/lcr supper may often be
taken with advantage. The valno of physical
exercise--and especially riding—in the open
air, can scarcely l*s overestimated, and shonld

they in tho slightest degree resembled snakes.
Ami for llfty yearn the old man reveled in hia
