A Nrr.Ka who had been in jail for eleven year*
under sentence of death, died last Tuesday at
Philadelphia. Tho warrant for his execution

Two of tho largest men in Terrell oonnly—
Messrs. W. Woodbrigfat and W. B. Gibson—
have recently had arms broken by being thrown
from buggies. The Journal aaya they were too
heavy to bonnes, and something had to break—
which do certainly explain it on philosophical
principles.
Alf Donaldson, who killed Mr. Borrell Bailey,
in Decatur county, last November, and for
which crime be was sentenced to the peniten
tiary for life, but escaped, was arrested last
Sunday, at Albany.
Half past eleven o’clock P. M. is s fateful bonr
at Dawson. There havo been four fires at that
place this year, three of which broke out at that
hour.
The popular chorus at Gainesville jnst now,

singers, though, we hope. If so, we hope the
G. T.'b will pletse make a cote of it.
The Gainesville Eagle says the schools of that
county under State control, which set out with
such vigor, have nearly all collapsed. We have
not heard, however, that Lewis' salary has
collapsed.
A squad of Federal cavalry arrived in Gaines
ville last Tuesday, having charge a number of
citizens of Hall connty, who had been arrested
on various charges. And the Gainesville Esgle
says drunkenness on the streets snd no arrests,
is the order of the dsy. Civilization is spread
ing np that way.
Gainesville was to vote, yesterday, on a prop
osition to subscribe four hundred shares in the
capital stock of the Gainesville and Dshlonega
Railroad, payable in the bonds of tbe city, at
par, twenty years from date at 8 per cent in
terest.
A little child of Dr. C. H. Kingsmare, of Au
gusta, fell into the Savannah river, last Thurs
day, and sunk twice before being rescued by a
negro man who saw the accident.
J. J. Browne, who shot Jss. Neal, at Augusta
one night last week, has been bailed in the sum
of $1,000 to answer the charge at tbe next term
Of Richmond Superior Court.

and which, if not averted, must prove fatal to
our republican institution*.

tbe law, as the inevitable sequence of tbe civil
war and of tbe overthrow of the rebellion
against the Union; and we hold it lo be the
duty Of all to snstain them in the enjoyment of
their established rights, to aid them in promot
ing their own welfare snd the general prosper
ity of the country.
Resolved, That we view with indignation the
eorropaon and extravagacee recently brought
to light in the management of the municipal af
fairs of New Y'ork, and denounoe aa unworthy
of our oonutenanee or toleration Ml who are re
sponsible therefor. We pledge our best efforts
to prevent tbe repetition of such abuses, end will
look with satisfaction upon the punishment of
all upon whom guilt can be fixed. We appeal
to the record and the facte to prove that the
deplorable condition of affair* existing in New
\ ork was inaugurated and foisted upon the city

Southerner of this cily was recently visited by
Mr. Robert Daniel, of Cobb oonnly, who, in the
course of conversation, remarked that he almost
felt a delicacy in relating tbe facts concerning
his family. Hia father was married twice, aud
liy one wife was the father of twelve, and by
the other fourteen—iu all, twenty-six children.
He was born in 174.1, and died 1840. He lived
to see 300 descendants from him. A grand
daughter of hia brought her grand-children one
hundred miles to see him, and the wifo of tbe
venerable old gentleman drank water from a
cup handed him by a grand daughter of her
grand daughter.
The Rev. J. Housing, of Florence, Missouri,
ha* been called to the cliargo of the German
Lnlheran Church of Atlanta.
Charlie Biidiong, aged six years, fell from a
tree near Antioch, Tronp connty, and was so
seriously injured that bo lived only n few hours.
We regret to read the following in the Atlanta
Era, of yesterday:
Knoxville, Tenn., October 4, 1871.—Onr

ment naturally consequent upon the mnrder of
General Clinton under so extraordinary circum
stances His murderer. Colonel D. M. Nelson,
lias returned and given bail in a bond of $25,-
000 signed by some of onr most prominent citi-
Eens, among whom are William G. Brownlow
and Captain Jaques, Vice President of the East
Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad. The
general opinion is that Nelson will never suffer
the penalty of bis crime—at le*st_ not in this
mode of existenee. Money and position will

some hook or crook, he will be released.
Tbe salary of the Mayor of Atlanta, for the
year 1872, has been fixed at $2,000. A move
was made in tbe eounctl to fix it at $1,000, so
as to diminish the number of candidates, bnt as
most of the Aldermen didn’t know what might
happen, the proposition was speedily knocked
in tho head.
Enoch Dixon, for whose capture there was
reward of $1,000 offered by Bollock, was ar
rested near Grantville, Thursday. Dixon bail*
from Habersham county.
Tbo Atlanta Sun reports the speedy enre, in
two oases, of the bite of the highland-moccasin
by nnlimit ed benzine, on the plantation of
Wm. Gunn, in Taliaferro connty. In one case
the victim wssa horse, and in the other a negro.
Tbe remedy proved effectual in a few hours.

New Obleoks, October 7.—Five pilot boats
were driven ashore in the southwest pass in the
gale of the 3d, including tho Robert Brnoe,
which waa totally wrecked, and fonr persons
were drowned. Tbo pilot, Frank Bailey, and
Cbaa Collier dang to the wreck thirty hoars,
and were rescued.
