When a nun gel* beartiy drank at
r»ra intorrals, not because of hi* dieeesed «pp*-
tj ” {.“Tfrom cood-f«Jlow»hip, the pain of pit-
!!& .a a prevenUtire Bo,
whSn the syatem becomes eatoreled and the
d«iro morbid, there i* not one in ten thomnjod
capable of being cored. For orer ton jam
Oin. Grant wa< notoriously a confirmed inebri-
at« He ioat hi* place in the army from that
cense: ho failed in business from the same rea
son • and when during the late war ho was in
fra sled with heavy responsibility, hi* eril habit
left the blood of innocent thousand* on bis
hands. No terrible was this that Ilia wife, an
estimable lady, at one time took steps to pro
cure a divorce, that abe might the better pro
tect herself and children from bi* neglect or
worse brutality.
Now we can well suppose that an anxiety on
the part of the President himself, and especially
on the part of his friends, may make him cau
tious not to expose himself, and the habit may
continue while his immediate friend* and de
pendent* tan dose around and conceal the in -
finuity for awhile from public scrutiny. Thi*
sra* certainly the case before hi* election.
Thoodoro Tilton, it will be remembered, met
him upon Sunday morning in the street* of
Wiuihington reding borne from A deliancb, and
cave a warning which the Republican party
failed to bred !>efore the man was nominated.
Now, it i* well known in social and political
circles here that at times be is utterly prostra
ted l.y drink; and it is part of hfa friends' tac
tics to cot him mnch of the year from the Pres
idential Mansion, which is open to the public,
to e privste house at Long Branch, where be
- may indulge wilhont fesr of expoanro. It ia
whispered aronnd in a cautions way that his
proposed trip to the Pacific slope was aban
doned because of the danger that would come of
exposure in so long an absence from the seeln-
*».» Of a lionse where only the initialed are ad
mitted.
J«i ns suppose this little game snccessfnl,
and that Oen. Grant succeeds in seeming a re-
election. Tbcro will I* no longer any reason
for constraint after ho is nut again in possession
of power. Wo rosy then Jive to witneea the dis
grace of our Chief Magistrate reeling drank
throngb our afreets, or tieing carried to the
Whito House in a slate of drunken Insensibility.
In view of this fearful result. Ibis national
shame, the qnestlon yon ask liecoraes of the
greatest Importance, and it is well for the Bo-
publican party, and the people at large, to panse
and investigate. ...
That Grant has been so intoxicated that he
was incapacitated—I won't say for business, for
that is bis normal condition—but so as to lie
shamefully coufnsed and even l.rnlal, since lie
became President, wo have abundant proof. It
will lie remembered that the Hon. Charles Snni-
ner, in the celebrated speech that is now of
record in tlio Congressional Globe, charges that
when the President called upon him to aecnre
his support of I ho ban Domingo projoot, he was
in such a condition that lie could not express
himself with coherence. Henalor Sumner, with
that delicate tact for which bo is celebrated, in
that speech gave the fact* without expressing
aoy opinion. In private conversation, however,
he doca not hesitate to give that opinion ; and
if called to the stand as a witness, ho wonld
testify that the President was in snrh a condi
tion as to bo offensive.
When the Cox difiirnlfy i centred, that which
ended in Gen. Cox leaving the interior Depart
ment, Gen. Iloynton, of Cincinnati, a gontle-
• man of talent and miiuilienehalilo good charac
ter, called upon the Secretary of tbn Interior,
and was shown the correspondence that caused
the resigns!ion. Gen. iloynton immediately
sent liis associate to the Whito House to inter
view the President, mid learn, if possible, what
course he purposed hiking in I ho premines.
The gentleman was admitted, and was aston
ished to hear from Grant's own lip* that no dif-
flcnlty existed with the Secretary of the Interior;
and on pressing the question as to the corre
spondence, I lie President answered fiercely lhal
no correspondence whatever had been had be
tween himself and Gen. Cox. As he hold on to
I ho table while K|«*kh>g, the journalist, draw
ing bis own eoneinaioiis, hurried a way.
Again, when the friends of Senator Williams,
of Oregon, some thirty in number, and among
the most inllneiilial mid respectable of the Pa-
cifio slope, waited upon President Grant to
pres* the claims of their friend, they found Gen.
Grant ao intoxiemed that lie was insulting. This
has been denied, lint n majority of that delega
tion freely confess tlio foci; and as the words
and manner of the President went to the world,
they could he accounted for upon no other hy
pothesis, supposing the incumbent of the While
Jlonse to poaiefs nn ordinary sense of decency.
A distinguished official of a State adjoining
Now York f mind himself in tlio night train from
Washington to yon* city, and so crowded that,
be contd not obi sin a seat. In thia emergency
he ran against a familiar of Grant, who inform
ed him that the President and his party, then
on their way to Dong Branch, had a ear to them
selves, and invited the nnceiufortablo official to
join them. He did ao, nnd found Gen. Grant
surrounded hy his peculiar sot. and well sup
plied with liquor and cigars. Onr friend was
invited to psriske, and. accepting the last named
only fiom the hands of the President, attempted
to smoke, but, although uaed to the practice,
fonnd the cigar loo strong. He so expressed
himself, when Grant said gruffly:
"They don’t hurt me."
Tlio night was spent in stories, drinking, and
smoking, of which two Inst the President par.
took freely; Imt this was the last and only oh.
nervation that fell from his executive lips. He
wss not in s conditiou to c.inveiee even if lie
had possesved the capacity.
'1 eonl.l fill columns wiih fsels of this sort;
Imt I confine myself tea few of the more prom-
incut. Among these is the well known experi
ence of that good and true man, Horace Gree
ley. It is not known, however, that Mr. Gree
ley s lack of confidence in Gen. Grant dates
from that fainons event. It will be remembered
that daring last winter Senator Chandler gave
Mr. Greeley a complimentary-entertainment at
iiiii palatial result*nee in Wflfbington. The house
waa thronged by the social and political mag
nate* then ARflemhled nt the national capital
who hastened with their wives and danghter* to
pay their respects to Ibo eminent journalist.
Among the rest came the President and hi*
friends, 1 orter, Babcock A Co. Daring the ewen-
ing Qredej, |>ein£ thirsty, was accompanied to
the hall by his host, where some ice*water might
be fonnd. There also was a hnge Chin* pnnch
bowl, and standing by. |*dl e j n hand, stood the
President of the Vmted States, not only help
ing himself to the strong mixture, bnt serving
other! who sought, in a throng to receive intox-
roation from the hand of the Chief Magistrate.
Mr. Greeley was fairly startled. Being • cold-
water man himself, and realizing tho evil effects
from • lifetime of observation of the deadly
poison that flows from the bowl, ho at first stood
in mneh •m.xemcnt and then remained to astia.
fy himself. The 1 resident drank freely, and
encouraged other* to follow hi* sad example.
m. i.v ^ *? '“toxicate an ordinary man,
although he seemed to escape, while aronnd him
*oaa arose evidences of the wrong being done.
Other head* not so well seasoned grew light,
aud other tongues grow noisy.
There are some dark siorieabero current eon-
ceruing that attempt at a divorce, and a familiar
of the 1 resident, once an inmate of the peni-
lentiaiy. but now in favor, is said to be poe-
aesaed of a secret interesting to the publicI.nt
I am not familiar with it, and I have confined
tuyaelf to well known facts, and leave jonr
readers to draw their own conclusions.
