was supposed to be fire-proof, finally suc
cumbed. Six of the largest elevators, the im-
mense depots of the Michigan Southern and
Illinois Central railroads, both passenger and
freight, are burned. More than a score of
churches and much shipping on the river are
destroyed.
Men who were millionaires yesterday morn
ing are nearly peniless to-day. But more
ternble than all is that certainly many have
perished in the flames—how many no one will
ever be able to tell, but it ia known several
persons have perished, snd there is only a
heart-sickening fear that the victims will be
counted by scores.
Hundredsof horses and cows have been burned
in stable?, and on the north side numbers of
animals, though released from confinement,
were so bewildered and confused by tho sea of
fire which surrounded them that they rushed
wildly to and fro, uttering cries of fright and
pain until scorched and killed.
Any attempt at a description of the scenes of
this appalling calamity would be idle. The simple
faots that the once great city of Chicago i3 des-
troyed; that hundredsof millions of active capital
here havo vanished, and nearly one-third of
Chicago’s inhabitants are houseless and de
pendant 13 sufficient. Any attempt to embellish
would bo mockery. As this awful day draws
to a close, thousands of anxious eyes watch tho
clouds of smoke which still roll over the burnt
district, with evident dread that a sudden
change of wind may tnm the flames into the
portion of the city yet spared. There seems,
however, little canso of apprension of it, and
firemen from other cities are constantly arriv
ing.

Synopsis of Weather Statement.
War Dep’t, Offioe Chief Signal Officer,)
Washington, D. C., October 9,7:40, r. at. >
The highest barometer which was Sunday
afternoon in North Carolina, has moved north
eastward and is now some distanc3 off tho mid
dle Atlantic coast, and the pressure has fallen
in aU the Atlantic and Gnlf States. Tho area
of lowest barometer has probably passed from
Nebraska and Dakotah to Lake Superior, but
no reports have been raceived from beyond
Chicago, owing to the fire in that eity. Brisk
southwesterly winds have prevailed on Lake
Michigan. Lighter winds on the Lower Lakes.
Northeast winds with eloud have prevailed da
ring the day on the South Atlantio coast, and
light rain in Florida. The temperature has fal
len in Missouri, and rain or snow have been
reported from Kansas.
Probabilities: The barometer will probably
fall more rapidly on Tuesday in the Middle and
Eeitem States, with partially cloudy and smoky
weather. Easterly winds with cloudy weather,
and possibly rain, on the Sonth Atlantic and
Gnlf ooast. Southwesterly winds with cloudy
weather on the lower Lakes. The cold weather
north of Kansas will probably extend to Lake
Michigan, with westerly winds and possibly
light rains.

waiter of the Brown House, John Thomas,
who has been off to take charge of the dining
halls of the Grand Union Hotel, of Saratoga,

too well known to the numberless guests of
that first-class house, fdr more to be said about
him than that he hns pgsnmfid charge of the
extensive corps of waiters, and that if they need
drilling they will assuredly receive it, and that,
too, at the hands of one who “knows how it is
himself.”
