Telegraph & Messenger. WEDNESDAY MOKNDJO, GOT. 11,. 1871. Walter Jlonlcomorj's "ire. I believe tie eeoeo end death of Riven in . day or twoJ^doibtenly b»ve fnlly transpired. £s»«== fessa, sr.'sSKs- >s f *At the Ume oMbe performance of tic “Black Crook''at the Continental Theatre (now the bL Jamie) in this city, there were two sisters who stood perched on a pedestal in a position that ahoired thoir fonna off to a Rovd advantage, which plased acme of tie “ infatnated other*. These two sisters went by the name of Bigelow, and were often spokenof as Doaaeaaine Lesntilnl forms and feature*. AmLoTthe constant visitors to the theatre a man B of mature age, a respected citisen of Jbe we* end of the city. He Ml in love ^^We fealnres or the form, we don t know which, or one oMheae girls. It took but very little work to^core an introduction, tbrongh ‘he agency of ™ of the attaches of the the.trc Hc thought no much beauty and elegance of form should not go without a proper recognition, so he popped the question and ebo accepted him, probably not for his looks, but for the money be poeaeesed, os he was reported as very wealthy/ They were married, but it waa im possible for two so unlike in disposition, age, irt? to live happily together, ^e, in company with her sister, was on the go all the time, and made the old follow's money fly very rapidly. Hhe run up accounta at various dry good stores on Washington street until her husband gave orders to the proprietors of the places not to trnHt her any more. This caused o fresh out- break, and the result was that she took a trip to New York with a “idee young man. ller hast, and stood it for about three weeks, and no longer. So he started after her and brought her home, forgiving her for all she had done if she would only consent tolivn with him. Of course she agreed to ail this, for tho old man’s purse was Inst whet ahe wanted to handle, and noth ing else. About this time Mr. Montgomery played an engagement at the lie ffon Museum. Miss Bigelow, or rstber Mrs. , attended Mf»h find every performance, and waa struck with hia beautiful shaped limbs, the same as Mr. bad been smitten with hers whilo in “Black Crook." Sbo sent him bouquets night- ly, with a card containing tho name of 44 Miss Bigelow” attached to it. Mr. Montgomery did not know who tho fair donor waa, and paid very little attention to the matter. When ho sailed for Europe, and find left our shores but n day, he waa introduced to a lady by the name of Bigelow, of Botton, who on inquiry turned out to be our heroine. A mutual friendshipaprung np between them on the voyage, when ahe in formed him that sho waa madly in lovo with him and had followed him on hia voyage home in order tbAt aho might ho near him. She passed herself off ah a maiden, and Montgomery be lieved her. To make a long atory short, ho subsequently married her, believing that bo was marrying a maiden who loved b*m for himse.’ f alono. The day aftor he waa married be found out that she whom be had roado bis wife already hid a hus band in Boston. It will bo rceolleetod that in a week he waa to sail for this country, and that ho waa engaged by f.omo of onr Jy cornua to give readings. It wna too much for a gentleman of his sensitive natifo to faeo tho public in this city with thoRe facta at Hiding prominontly be fore them. It would l»o tho gossip of the city and sent broadcast throughout tho country. It waa too much for hia nerve i, and tho result waa, ho toak bin own life. This is given as tho troo cause of Walter Montgomery’s suicide. Whether tho wife can satisfy bor conscience in tho part sho played in this tragedy, is a ques tion we laeve entirely to her alone. Her husband now in Ibis city haa como to tho con clusion that ho is bolter off without her. and will apon enter n Rnit for ft divorce.—Boston Correspondence New York World. The I.ulcst Niinkc Ntorj Tho following story is given by an Iowa paper, which gnnrnntcc* its" truth, and gives the names of a number of distinguished public men oUhu Btate as additional vouchers: * Mr. Cntnmins owns a gypsum quarry near Fort Dodge, and employs u force of twonty-fivo men. llo lies worked it only a year or two, lint ever ainco ho opened every spring and fall bis men have suffered serious iucouvenieneo and annoy sneo from tho myriads of snakes that have a don in tho crevices, and swarm in dnrirg the fall and oat in tho spring. Tho editor of the pn|>or in question, in com pany with a number of other gentlemen recent ly paid n visit to tho qnnrry. The sun was jnst warming up tho northern slope when the party arrived, r id this is hia description of what followed -. Frum out the crevices the snakes were crawling in all dircc ions, and "awash, awash" went tho huge clubs of the two men who were defending their fellow workmen, and evoiy blow was tbo death of a snake. Just at onr feet crawled a deadly moccasin, whilo to the right and left spotted adders and chasers sqnirmed and hissed as they twined among the alone* or escaped np tho bluff. Directly 11 front of ns lay a pilo of deed sol penis as large as a two bushel basket, while on the face of tbo eloping bluff were probably three hundred rep tiles which bsd escaped the dubs of the men and were hastening away to tho prairie, their elevated beads and writhing bodies transform ing the bluff into no mythical Gorgon head. Jnst stave us, on a lodge of rocks was a huge adder, and Mr. Cummins picking np a peace of lock heaved it on him, pinning him to the ledge, but the snake was game ; some three feet of his liody waa free, and gathering himself np would loap fall at us with all his force, hissing and opening hia jaws in a way that made tho blood rnn cold, and the next leap he made, a blow from onr cane sent his head spinning a score cf feet and the bleeding trunk dropped to tho earth below. The snakes are said to retire to their dens abont two P. M, every day, after which all is qniet until the sun's rays again reach the quarry, when the same thing ia repeated. Two hundred and seventy.fivo snakes were killed that day, the number for two weeks footing np fi.nOO, while it is supposed that ten times that cumber escaped. On the I lib of October the snakes commence to return and enter their dens for the winter, when the same slaughter ia re peated. PLANTATION FOB SALE.
