GRot's in Ei'Korr. - '1 he harvest returns show
that in F'.ugland tho winter prospect is not a
cheerful one, and the loss, s sustained by stock
raisera supplement th* an of short crops and the
spread of tho potato disease. The returns from
other parts of Europe are more enooaraging,
but the genural impression, derived from a re
view of the whole field, is much leas favorable
than that which was formed from a review of
our own harvest fields, published a few weeks
ainoe. Indeed, compared with the condition of
American breadstuff markets, ilroso of Great
Britain and many parts of Europe are in a
stnigli'encd condition; and this fact, added lo
tho appreciation of prices ante to follow the de

of future prices in the West.
Origin or in* Chicago Fire.—The Commer
cial Advertiser dispatches report as follows:
iAte on Sunday evening a boy went inio a'
atable on Dekoven street near ibe river on the
W eat side, to milk a obw, carrying with him a
keretene lamp. This waa kicked overby theoow,
and Iho burning fluid Mattered among tho straw.
This was the beginning of the great fire. A sin
gle extinguisher on the ground, or aotive work
of tho police in tearing down one or two sban-
tiea, would have prevented the spreading flsmea;
but the engine* were waited for, and, when
they arrived, the firemen, stnptfied by their ex-
ertions at the first fire on Saturday night, worked
alowly and clumsily. Their i fforta nuavailed;
the wind from the southwest blew a gsle, rapid
ly the llsities shot from honse to house and from
board yard to board yard, until the district
burned the night before was reached.
Tire Forest and Frairie Firms.
The Wisconsin forest fires in respect to Ions
of life, are os terrible as tho Chicago holocaust.
Five hundred snd filly are reported in Iho
morning dispatches of this edition as burned to
^eatli, and many have perished in the riven,
whither they were driven to escape a more
frightful death from the devouring flsmea. It
ia bard to aay which presents the more start
ling record of human ealamity, the burning
metropolis of tbe West in her fiery agonies—
or that vast forest and prairie region of whieh
she is tho great mart—swept with all consuming
flames—destroying everything but the naked
ud blackened soil, snd driving the terror-
stricken people before the storm of fire to death
by burning or drowning.
Nor ia it eaay to aay, in respect to three peo
ple, whether death itaelf may not be preferable
to the privations and sufferings whieh awsit the
living. When we remember that just as tbe

There Mnst be a Convention.
We have beard bnt one opinion expressed as to
the necessity of a convention of the Demoeratie
members of tho Legislature when it aasomblea,
for the purpose of puttingiorward the beat men
for presiding and other officers of each Honse.
This seems the party judgment, traanimon-Jy,
ao far as we have heard and do know ourselves.
The members of each House must meet and se
lect the best men, and then pledge themselves
to aland by them. There must be no guerrillaa
nor stragglers to fail victims to tbe wilee of the
common enemy. Let all wear the uniform and
march in ranks. This is tbo way to secure tbe
full fruits of our victory, and at the same time
equitably divide tbe weight of reeponsibility
now resting upon the ahonldera cf the Demo
cratic perty of Georgia. We hear no objection
to tbia policy, and we trust there will be none.
In connection with the question of e con
vention to make nominations, we vronld also
suggest that on no occasion, heretofore, has
there been more argent reason for the exercise
of tbo gravest deliberation and the soundest
judgment in making choice of proper presiding
officers for both bonsca. Ability is requisite,
we all know, but there ato other essentials per
haps more important—certainly, sa important—
just now. Ability withont prudence, e cool
head, steady nerves, and at least a fair knowl
edge of parliamentary law, would not serve as
well aa these last essentials and a less measure
of natnral capacity for the position. A man who
possessed all those qualities, but was not bril
liantly endowed as to intellect, could better
serve tbo purposes in view than the ablest man
in either body wbo did not possess them. Wbat
the situation demands is safe men—men who
will not speak or act until they have weighed all
tbe consequences, and who, having once taken
position, will not retract from it. There may
l>e acme grave work to do at Atlanta dnring the
coming session, and those wbo tJisll give it
shape and direction should bo of a temper and
habit entirely controlled by judgment and sound
discretion—not passion and impulse.
Bnt wo remit tbo whole question to Iho good
sen so, tbo patriotism, and honest ilosiro to do
their whole duly of tbo memliers themselves.
They have gravo responsibilities, but wo are
assured they aro fully alive, or well os fully
equal to them all. Wo will not jicrinit ourselves
to doubt that they will, in ell things, bo
guidod by “ wisdom, justice and moderation,’
nor that they will lift up oar dear old Mother
front the dust of hor long and biller humilia
tion. Wo only desire that they bo truo io the
principles upon which (hey were elected, and to
their instincts and impulses as Georgians, and
all will be well

The Atlanta Constitution, of yesterday, aaya:
The Macon and Western Railroad Lease
Case. —Governor Bullock employed the follow
ing able attorneys to represent the interest of
tbe State in the lease c*ao of tbe Maeon and
Western Railroad: Anderson A Lanier, r f Ma-
eon; A- O. Bacon, of Macon; B. B. Hinton, of
Colnmbns; \Va Phillips of Marietta. We are
informed that the Governor got er- GjTornor
Joseph E. Brown and Chief Justice Lochrane to
determine the size of their fees, which are set
tled at $1,250 each, making an aggregate of
$5,000. At least the fees of Maeon law) era are
thus, and we understand the others are of the
itojo fcize.
As tbe Supreme Court decided Ibst the State
had no interest in this lease case, it will be
seen that the employment of connsel to repre
sent the Slate’s interest was muieotteary, and it
opens np to probability the suspicion that has
been emphatically expressed, tbst Governor
Bullock is spending tbe State's money to gu n
Democratic friends. It is fortunate, however,
that he selects such men as tbe above, who are
ineorrupuble, and wbo would have spurned tbe
fee bad they have thought such a thing was
contemplate d.
But tnere is another view to this esse. Of
course a lawyer takes fees as they come, their
legitimate professional services being in the
market and bringing them meat and bread.—
But this wholesale employment of large num
bers of attorneys at the capriee of the Execu
tive at State expense should and must be
stopped. Tho people demand it, and it is one
of the pressing duties of the new Legislature to
attend to this.

Tho Knoxville Press and Herald of the 12th
We live in a day of mementoes financial
operations. We chronicled, on yesterday, the
pnrebase of the Knoxville and Kentucky Rail
road, by W. B. Johnston A Co., representing
the lessees of the Western and Atlantic Railroad
and the Pennsylvania Central, tor $330,000.
Also tbe purchase of the Cincinnati, Cumber
land Gap and Charleston Railroad, by the East
Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Company, for
$300,000. _
On Monday, also, at Nashville, the Nashville
and Chattanooga Railroad Company purchased
from the Railroad Commissioners, the Nashville
and Northwestern Railroad, leading from Nash
ville to Hickman, Ky. The price paid was
$1,700,000 in State bonds, $500,000 in currency
already expended on the read—for whieh the
Nashvillo and Chattanooga Company hold a
claim for extraordinary expenses nnder the
terms of their leaso of the Nashville and North
western—and the assumption of tbe claims of
tbe United States Government against tbe pur
chased road.
Tim Social Condition
Is pretty well illustrated by tho following from
tho BInff City Times:
Considerate.—On last Sunday evening one
of our citizens saw his carriage driver “walking
down broadway" with his best Sunday coat od,
which lie had missed for some time. At night,
calling tbo driver up, the following conversation
occurred:
Tom, bring my coat back, it’s too good for
yon to wear.
I no got your coat baas.
Ob, yeH yon have, Tom; I saw yon with it on
this evening. Bring it back. I can’t wear it
any more, but I can sell it for something, and
besides you ongbt not to bnvo taken my best
coat no /tout.
Well, boss, 1'il go git it, and accordingly the
coat was brought.
Now Tom, tbe next time yon must hare a
coat, come np and I’ll sell yon one cheap, bnt
don't steal my clothes.
No boss, I clar I done quit take yonr close no
more; and the conversation ended.
Our friend aaya this is the best trado of the
kind he ever made. If he bad prosecuted the
rascal, he would not bavo reformed him nor
recovered bis coat. If he had discharged him
lie would have had the trouble of hiring another
driver who might have stolen two coats and all
hia breeches, the first chance he got. Uo is de
lighted at his luck.
* Tnx Sun says tbe bed of the Mississippi river
seems to bo filling np at a rate which threatens
in the course of timo to seriously affect naviga
tion during Iho diy season. This year at St.
Louis, while the surface of the water has been
fnnr feet and one iuch above the lowest stage
of water attained by ihe riverin 1803, there was
at tho santa time only about five inches differ
ence in tbe depth cf Iho channel between "
years, showing that tbe bottom of the river must
be three feet and fonr inches higher than it was
in 1803. Sa in 1856 the bed of tbe river was
fonnd to be two feet and three inches higher
tbsn it was ten years previous. It is thought
that tough clay particles are brought down by
tributary streams from the cultivated fields of
the northwest and deposited in the channel, and
that tbe«e, forming with the sand a concrete
mass, adhere to tbe bottom, inatead of being
aconre.1 out by the nnnual freshets, aa is tbe
case with ummxed sand.
Chicago —Tbe New York Sun, commenting
npon the Chicago conflagration, says*
Oue g<>od result will be obtained. Chicago,
when it is rehnilr, will lie bnilt mnch more sub
stantially and handsomely than it was before.
It is impossible tbst, in tbe face of this awful
warning, the anthoritiea will permit tbe farther
erection of those wooden shunties which were
at ouoe no disfiguring and no dangerous to the
city. For it is not to be doubted that bat for
tbe immense number of these inflammable
structure*, the fire could never bavo got Jhe
headway it did, and tbns been enabled to over
Como tbe more Rabstantial buildings of brick
and stona. Exposed as Chicago is to fierce
winds from both tbo lake and tbe prairies, to
Imiid it of wood was to invite precisely tbe de
vastation that has swept over it. In the in
funey of tho city it was perhaps impossible to
prevent this from being done; bnt now that its
prosperity ia consolidated and its fntnre as
sured, tiie periions practice should bo prohibited.

Mrs. Amebica Riggins, wifo of E. L. D. Rig.
gins, died at her residence, in Bibb county,
September SO, 1871, in the 59th year of her age.
Truly "death loves a shining mark,” and tho
insatiate monster haa never struck down from
tho walks of lifo one whose absence will be so
sorely felt in the oommnnUy where she liTed as
this noble-hearted, Christian lady.
Kindness, love, gentleness and patience were
the beantifnl traits that made her piety con
spicuous and gave brilliancy and loveliness to
her pure character. For 45 years she adorned
the Christian profession in communion with the
Methodist Chnrch, and through all that long
period her religions life was untarnished and
spotless.
Devotion to Christ and hia church waa the
ruling principle of all her actions, and her whole
character was adorned and beautified by the
graces of religion. She let hor light shine be*
fore men, and many were brought, through the
influence of her bright example, to glorify her
Father in Heaven. To do good to the souls
and bodies of men was her meat and drink; and
sorrowing hundreds who knew and loved her
will rise np and call her blessed. Such a woman
is a blessing to her family, society and the
chnrch, and Her death is a public calamity. She
waa an active, zealous Christian, “alwfvs
abounding in the work of the Loid.”
The Sunday-school was the field in which her
laving heart found its largest dslight, and for
many long years did this sainted woman, though
feeble in body, gather the children of her
neighborhood together in n eemmon log honse
and teach them ucaided the doctrines of her
holy religion. To her devotion, nnder God,
more then to any other one person, a respecta
ble chnrch was bnilt in her neighborhood; and
there Sabbath after Sabbath, winter and sum
mer, did this heroic woman go and minister to
the religions wants of the rising generation.
Her name and virtues are enshrined in the
hearts of all who knew her; for “to know ter
was to love her " Her life is her noblest mon
ument, for her works of piety and love will live
through all the generations to come. Withont
the refinement and polish of the gayer circles of
society, she possessed what was far better—a
pare heart and a guileless spirit. Her home
was always brightened by her presence, and
her death has made a vacuum which can never
be filled.
Ko woman haa ever so completely won the
hearts of an entire neighborhood, nor has any
oommnnity ever felt so universally bereaved in
the death of a single person
If “the memory of tbe jost is blessed,” then
certainly tbe memory of ihe be,ntifol virtues of
our cherished friend will otct remain as a pre
cious legacy to all wbo knew her.
As a wife, mother, muteem, and friend she
was peerless and faultless. Christ-like gentle-
nese and abounding charity were the brightest
gems in her oornet of virtue*, and made her
character a fit example for imitation. Like
Paul, she might have safely said, “follow me aa
I follow Const.” Noble woman! we oh oil miss
tbee from thy home, the church, the walks of
life. Thy. friendship was one of the sweetest
enjoyments and most highly prized privileges
of our earthly life. Words cannot express thy
virtues, and no eulogy would be extravagant ia
illustrating Iby goodness. We leave tbee to
rest in tie quiet grave, but in the morning of
tbe Resurrection we shill hope to meet thee on
the other aide of (he river. A Fuctn.
