Insveinck.—It is with pleasure that wo call attention to tho card cf Mr. Backns, agent in this oily for several insaranco companies. Be is representing tbo Qnocn Insurance Company of London *Dd Liverpool, whose assets are ten millions of dollars, and which stands alono in tho fact that it sustained not one cent of loas by the great Chicago disaster. Tho only fear is Ibat it will liavo an over rush under the cir cumstances, and will have to curtail its busi ness. Wc advise all wanting insurance to call upon Mr. Backns at once. An Attest rx at Incesmarish.—Wo copy bo- low, from a letter received yesterday afternoon from CoL John G. Webb, of Fort Gaines, a biiof account of a fiendish attempt to destroy by file tho residence of Mr. James Sutlive, of Fort Gaines. Mr. S. is one of the most sub atantial citizens of Fort Gaines—a member of tho £nn of Sutlive A Holland, extensive doslers in general merchandise. Wo congratulate him upon his narrow . scape. Wonder if the ap proaching State I'«tr can account for it ? An attempt wr.» m*do on last Saturday night, 11tfa inst., to fire the residence of Mr. James SnUivc. Four negroes (two boys and two women) have been committed to await their trial before the Snperior Coart next March. The damage to the building was very alight Slrstc.—“Tho man who hath no muaio in himself, and ia not moved by concord of sweet sound* is fit for treason," etc , so snng Wm. Shakspearo a long tirno ago. We taka sides with William on that subject and insist upon it that every family should have some musical in strument “about Uio bouso" with soma or sev eral members of the family skilled in the art, thereby making homo pleasant and attractive. It yon wont a piano that will bo an ornament to yonr parlor, go to Guilford A Bill's, where yon can find just tbo tliing'you want They keep musical instruments of every variety and will furnish them as cheap, no donbt, as they can be bought in Georgia. They are also agents for the celebrated Florence Sewing Machine, with- oat which no housewife can comfortably afford to live. Go and see them. “Sick A nan."—Fora week past we have been closely confined in bed, and since we began to recover have had a regular “fover taste” in our mouth all tho while. Wo could by no means stir up an appetite, bnt kept moping about feel ing completely “stewed np.” Yesterday morn, ing we were passing down Mulberry street feel ing very badly, and when in front of Mr. Car los' establishment met him at the door. Be bowed us in with ono of his most pleasant smiles. By tho way, he has the most smiling countenance we «Tcr saw, and if yon get up in the morning about half mad, go to see him and he'll smile yon into a good hnmoyin a few minntos. Well, in we went, and after looking around a few minutes began to get a smell at the rich, savory meals, etc., that were being prepared, and before we knew it, were as hun gry as a wolf, since which time wc have felt much better and hope to oontinne improving. If yon want good things to eat, either cooked or uncooked, his is the place to get them. Everything eatable ean bo procured at the Georgia No. 2. A i'ink selection of Rogers' scissors, pocket- knives, razors and straps, portmonaies, walking cane*, etc., at E. J. Johnston's. ootlO lot McLean's Cordial and Blood Purifier is the best tonio and blood alterative in the world. E. J. Johnston is offering eomo great bar gain* in fine gold half sets jewelry, plated ware, etc. Give him a call. Cowz, Etextbodt.—Some of the readers of the Telegraph and Messenger have, nodcubt, read State Fair items ad natutam, but it is, or should be, a matter of vast importance to every citizen of Georgia, and we therefore ask that they indulge na a little longer. Two years ago the State Fair was held here and many, many who came had to remain “out in the cold” until the next train going ont could take them to their homes again. Those of onr citizens who are most directly interested in these exhibitions are of that class who. when ones deceived are ever after “alow to believe.” We apeak of the farm- era, the plain, old eonntry farmers, who are the bone and sinew of Georgia. The impression prevails with many such that this will be bnt a repetition of the other, and not a few who are really anxious to be present will be influenced by each fears to stay away. Would that CTery man in the State could see and know for them selves as we do upon this subject. Our citizens, with a liberality uncqnaled heretofore, either by themselves or others, are preparing, and of- faring to the committee appointed by Mayor Bnff for the purpose, every available room in the city for the accommodation of visitors. Onr restaurant end saloon keepers are laying in sup. plies of food sufficient to fill all the demands out side of the hotel accommodations, and we verily believe that tweDty thousand visitors can now be famished with everything necessary to their comfort. Besides, the grounds are most beauti fully arranged, and afford conveniences for camping rarely found on such occasions. Many of the county agricultural clubs have heretofore carried their tents with them, being provided with all necessary cooking ntensils and other camp equipage. To them wo unhesitatingly say, you have never found such beautiful ground* and so many conveniences for camping as yon will find at Central City Park. The grounds are not as before, come two miles distant from the city, thereby leaving you dependent upon railroad uncertainties, but are within one-half mile of the passenger depot. The street cars will be running continnally, bnt should they fail to fur nish sufficient transportation, you can take the “people's line" and only be refreshed by the abort walk. Dispel, thon, your doubts and fears and eomo and ace the products of yonr glorious State—the products of yonr own industry and ingenuity. We confidently promise that you shall not go away dissatisfied with yonr stay among ns. Remember that Buff is onr Mayor and he never does things by halves. BY TELEGRAPH. We Peotest.—We do most earnestly protest against the “daring robbery,” "another bold at- tempt,” and sneb like articles that have, for the past few days, appeared in the local columns of this and other pipers, all being accounted for by the approach of the State Fair. Warning after warning has been sounded to the people until many will, wo fear, take for granted that the Fair Grounds will be literally “a den of thieves.” Wo repeat it; wo fear Ibat such ar ticles will have a tendency to binder manyfrom being present who have already determined to come. That a concourse of twenty thousand people should bo entirely freo from Ibieves and pickpockets is not to bo supposed, but tho poo pie will, as a rule, bo prepared for them by car rying no valuables about their persons. So long as Mayor Buff has control of affairs tho people may rest assured that every precaution will be taken to prevent theft and robbery on the Grounds, and the citizens of Hncon will surely have sense enough to look closely after their own premises. We may be mistaken, but it is our candid opinion that such articles will have a tendency to frighten away many of the more timid from the rural districts who aro naturally disposed to look upon cities as nothing better than outcroppings from tbo infernal regions, and tbo abodes of everything that is vile and infamous. Then let us assure yon, our country friends, that yon need entertain no fears as to yonr safely during the State Fair. Leave yonr gold watches at home; come along and eoo what Georgians can do, and have done. Bring with yon your wives and others who can appreciate tho exhibition, feeling fnlly satisfied that yon will receive every attention, and if yon behave yourselves will go away nnhnrt. To the Ladies.—Wo beard Mayor Huff re mark yesterday that the ladies of Macon wore its beat citizens, and displayed a greater desire to make the State Fair what it ahonld be—a grand success—than the gentlemen did, a thou sand times. They have responded nobly to his call upon them to prepare decorations for the building*, and we observed a large number of them yesterday engaged in making wreaths, festoons, and other evergreen ornament*, to beautify Floral HalL We earnestly trnst that there will be no diminution in the attendance, for to-day and to-morrow will bo the time their ser vice* are most wanted, and when the exercise of their exquisite taste will bo most in demand. With Mayor Bnff to construct and the ladies to adorn, wo aro willing (o wager highly that onr State Fair will bo the great event of 1871, or at any rato only second to the Chicago fire. We again call upon “onr best citizens,” the ladies, make tho Fair Gronnd their headquarters for the next two days, and finish the work of beau tifying that they have so admirably commenced, and then let them nso all next week in admir ing it. A Fleasant Risk.—Many of onr reader*, no donbt, have occasion to visit the little town of Abbeville, Henry county, Ala., and not a few have been neglecting or postponing visits to that beautiful and enterprising little village, because of want of transportation, Fort Gaines being the nearest point that ean be reached by rail or steamer on the Chattahoechec. We can, with confidence, now assure parties having busi ness at Abbeville that a regular daily hack-line is running between the two points. The line is su perintended by Mr. J. T. Walker,of Fort Gaines, and we “speak that we do know” when we un hesitatingly pronounce him a nice, clover gen tleman. No pains will be spared to make pas sengers comfortable), and tho faro is cheap onough—only $4 to Abbeville and return. We suggest to onr wbolcsolo homes here that it wonld be well to solicit tho trade of Abbeville, there is a great deal of business done at that point and it will shortly bo connected with Eu- fanla by rail. Meanwhile yonr drummers can find daily accommodations in the way of travel from Fort Gaines by Mr. Walker's back lino. Try it. Local Brevities.—CapL Clias. J. Williamson has been appoanted by Mayor Hoff Assistant Superintendent of Floral Hall, and placed spe cially in charge of the Fine Art Department. Oca attention was attracted yesterday to a negro woman inhumanly beating a small child, near tho old Conrt-house square. It may have been wicked, bnt we slionld have liked to make subscription to pay the brute's funeral ex penses. In response to the criticism of a fair Atlantisn, the gallant President of the Macon and Augusta Railroad has caused the bridge over the Ocmnl- goe river to be whitewashed. It much improves the looks of things. The celebrated bones, Mathew Smith and Dan Yoorhees, have been entered at the Fair by T. P. Roach, of Indianapolis, Indiana. All the railroads leading into Macon mill run extra trains daring fair week. On Exhibition.—We wore shown yesterday morning a fall set of horse shoes made by Mr. Hay, tbo celebrated Canadian horse shoer, at the shop of Messrs. English & Son, in roar of W. Butko & Co.'a book store. They in- tended (or inhibition at the State Fair, and are perfect models as we have ever seen. Mr. Bay makes bore-shoeing a specialty, and we hope his work will receive special notice at onr great State Exhibition, commencing on the 23d inst. Messrs. English & Sou have also a carri age shop in .connection with their blacksmith shop, where work of every kind in that line will be executed in aa Deal style and at as low figures at any place in Georgia. Don’t forget where they stay—just in rear of J. W. Burke 4 Co.’a bookstore. DAY DISPATCHES. Washington, October 19.— In the United States Supreme Court No. 96, the State of Louisi ana, ex Bel. W. W.
