The liver ia more eenaitive when the weather ia

Tn* PnmosoniY or Toxic Sttxct.uxts.—Some
enbatancea have tbe power of influencing the
changes which go forward in the human tisanes,
witbont themselves taking any integral part in these
changes. Salt, for instance, hastens transforma
tion and waste, and consequently creates tbe neces
sity for a more liberal diet; while, on tbe other
band, alcohol retards change and waste. On this
principle, Dr. Fitcb, in hie Bitters, lias furnished a
preparation having among other properties that of
preserving both tbo materials and tbo forces of the
system; and in this, as in othor things, ’’A penny
saved ia a penny gained.” But it is not only in this
negative way that Dr. Fisch'a remedy works for the
building np of tbe physical man. While it holds
back tbo wasting processes, it spars forward tbe
repairing processes. It promotes tho flow of tbe
aUmentstive juices in tbe month, tbe etomach and
tho liver; and thus enables tbo system to utilize
more food—to mako moro blood. The scriptural
assertion that “tho blood thereof is tbo lire there
of," is tbo expression of a physiological fact: and
the amount of food which a man can eat with relish,
and digest, affords the exact measure and index of
tbe man's strength. And when once Dr. Fiscb's
remedy baa given tbe start to an improvement in
ttiia direction, the nnaided energies of nature take
np the work and carry it forward, and thus render
tbo amelioration permanent.

The Weathxh.—If it would only rain a small
shower to settle the dost, this weather would be
decidedly lovely. It is neither too cool nor too
hot, bat after the business of the day opens the
dust is really stifling. The wagons and drays
pass np and down the streets raising a perfect
cloud behind them, but despite it all, there still
continues a grand rush at the saloon and groce
ry establishment of W. P. Carlos, on Mulberry
street His business has been better for the
past few days than at any time daring the sea
son, and so long aa be keeps folly up to his pres

A Woed to the Business Men ox Macon.—
We may perhaps be presuming a little when we
offer a suggestion to business men, but we mean
it in no dictatorial spirit nor do we mean to in
trude onr own pi irate notions upon them. Bat
in this instance we cannot be accused of very
great presumption, ss the subject upon which
we propose to make a suggestion is one of gen-
end interest to elk Most of the yonng men in
the city who are employed in the different bus
iness bouses are anxious to be present, for a
short time at least, at the Fair and witness the
boat and trotting races that are to take place on
Thursday and Friday. Not a few are members
of tho different boat clubs. The business men
of Atlanta closed their doors for one entire day,
and snrely onr employers are as liberally in
clined toward their employees as those of the
Gate City. Bnt the suggestion we wonld make
is this: That instead of dosing one whole day
the business houses be dosed at, say 1 o’clock
p. M., on both Thursday and Friday. By so
doing (dne notice being given to that effect)
parties coming from the country near by, and
also from a distance, could make their pur
chases sad transact all their business in the
forenoon, giving the afternoon to the worn-down
employees for recreation and profit to them
selves by inspecting the many curiosities and
material improvements that will be on exhibi
tion, and witnessing tbe races that are to take
place on each of those days. We verily believe
that nothing will be lost to the merchants by so
doing, bnt on the contrary the yonng men will
feel a debt of gratitude resting npon them that
will retnm them to their duties with redoubled
energies, more fnlly resolved to do their whole
dnty than ever before. We believe the sugges
tion a good one, and hope onr merchants and
other business men will take it into considera
tion.
Ths Fun Gbouxds.—Yesterday was a lively
day at the Fair Grounds. Hundreds of ladies
were engaged in the decoration of Floral Hall
with wreaths, festoons, flsga and banners, and
the result was simply superb. Parties exhibit
ing goods were like bees in a hive, each endeav
oring to render by extranions appliances, bis
own particular assignment of spaoe as attractive
as it could be made, and the taste displayed in
this direction in many instances was of itself
worth; of a preminm. Tho interior of Floral
Hall (as yet but half filled with goods) presents
a “grand spectacular appearance.”
A large number of life-sized statues, busts,
ete., were placed in position to-day. Among
them were copies of the celebrated Venus di
Medici, Ceres, Bachanalia and other antiques,
statuettes of Flora, the Greek Slave, Henry
Clay, boats of Washington, Franklin and Sir
Walter Soott, and numerous fancy figures.
Many fine paintings have been hung on the
walls of the piotnre gallery, and numerous en
tries that have been made in this department
are waiting to be hung.
The gronnds will be lighted np this evening
to learn if any imperfections exist in the pro
posed plan of so doing.
Workmen are engaged in laying down the
track for tho “one-legged looomotive” in the
enclosure of the half mile track, in the centre of
which Mayor Huff has caused a fine statue of
Mercury to be placed.
The telegraph office will be ready to receive
messages this morning, and with a branch ex-
press office and a special post-office will prove
a great convenience to tho visitors to the
gronnds.
The Society flig has been hoisted over the
main entrance. It simply bears tho name of
the Society in bine letters on a white ground.
As an instanco of the rapidity with which work
ia done there, a large sign was placed on Pre
minm Hall last evening, the wooden portion of
which was sawed from tho log in the morning.
A fine foot, bridge has been erected over
Woodruff Creek to Regatta Island, thus giving
the ladies a chance to visit it dry shod.
Tho two fountains will be finished this morn-
ing, and will add greatly to the appaaraneo of
the gronnds.
Tbe sprinklors were at work all last night,
and this morning the dust will be nowhere.
Weston, the champion walkist, reaches the
oity this evening at 8:20, and wiU commence
walking on Monday afternoon.
You can get a genuine imported Havana Ci
gar for only 10 cents, at the New York Grocery
Store. .

BY TELEGRAPH.

Lite Insdeance.—How many poor widows
and orphans are left unprovided for by thought
less husbands and fathers. The system of life
insurance, as practiced at the present day, has
placed it within tho power of every man, by
laying aside a small snm each year and properly
investing tho same in a policy in some safe and
reliable company, to provide a handsome sup
port for tbe dear ones after he has departed.
The old, old story of the uncertainty of life has
been heard until men become indifferent. After
providing for a man's own spiritual interests
the most important objoct upon which his every
energy can be bent is that of leaving a com
pliancy for wife and little ones when he shall
be called away from them. The only point to
be settled is as to tho most prompt and substan
tial company in which to invest their yearly
savings. We can bnt judgo tho fnture by the
paBt, and when a company has always here-
tofoio paid its losses without delay, other
things being equal, it is reasonable to sup
pose it will continue the same. Hero let ns
call attention to the St. Lonis Mutual, of which
Messrs. Burke 4 Cobb are agents in onr city.
The subjoined letter from Col. Hardeman will
explain itself, and we offer no apology for i's
Insertion in onr local colnmn:

Mob* Entbies.—The entries for exhibition at

the latter class will be found some fine speci
mens of art produced by our friend Pngh. He
is a genius in his line, and all who wish life-like

Eating too Fast.—There is a groat deal more
danger in eating too fast, than in eating too
much. In fact, if the food is sufficiently mas
ticated, before swallowing, it is almost impossi
ble to overload the stomach. We American
people are always in a hurry. We never have
time to eat. Everything we do is done in n
trot. The consequence is we are a nation of dys
peptics. But nature has kindly furnished ns with
remedies gashing from onr hill and mountain
sides. The mineral waters that glide so softly
away through field and woodland are laden with
treasures, whose vslne can never be estimated.
Prominent among these is the Excelsior Spring
at Saratoga, whose healing virtues can now be
enjoyed by all, whether able to visit the spring
or not. At the drag store of G. E. Sassdorff it
can be found as pure as when it gushed from
native rock*. It is a mild and gentle aperient,
and persona needing such a medicine would do
well to give it a trial. His house is also sup
plied with chemicals, paints, oils, fancy toilet
articles and everything else kept in a first-class
drag establishment.
All the delicacies of the season, at the Geor
gia No. 2. ^
Oua Peices Ccbexnt.—We give a brief daily
report of our grocery market, and once a week
we try to mike it out in foil. It will be seen
that only the groceries are qnoted, for the sim
ple reason that to give a detailed report of prices
of dry goods, etc., wonld occupy too much
space. But dealers below and purchasers must
not infer thorefrom that our market is not sup.
plied with acrytiung that they want. We
have some very Urge wholsalo dry goods houses
who can famish any and everything wanted at
New York prioes. Prominent among these is
tho honso of J. B. Ross 4 S. T. Coleman, whose
advertisement appears in to-day’s issue. Wo
have looked through their stock and find it to I A fine selection of Rogers’ scissors, pocket-
be very full in both dry goods and shoes. Call I knives, razors and straps, portmonaies, walking
and seo them. * canes, etc., at E. J. Johnston’s. octlO lOt
Race this Evening.—A pacing match will
take pUce at tho Fair Gronnds this evening be
tween the horses of^Messrs. Foonds and Marr.
The programme is mile heats—best two in
three—and the hoar sharp four.
Sebious Accident.—We regret to learn that
at a late hour last night, Mr. Geo. F. Wing, a
printer of this city, while working off a job,
had his left hand caught in the press and in
jured so severely as to necessitate the amputa
tion of three of his fingers. Dr. Fitzgerald is
in attendance on the sufferer.

Cars daring Fair week, bnt notice is given in
onr advertising columns that no money will be
received on the cars. Tickets are for sale at
several business houses in ths city, and at all
the hotels. Persons wishing to ride wonld do
well to notice the advertisement, and save
trouble, by procuring tickets in advance.
One Mole All Bight.—Wo hear occasional
ly of an insurance company coming ont whole
footed from the Chicago fire, and it will be well
for onr business men to watch with a hawk’s
eye for those tint are most solvent The fol
lowing dispatch was received on yesterday by
Mr. S. M. Farrow, agent in our city for the
Pacific Insurance Company, of San Francisco,
California, dated October 19:
“We make provision for payment of all losses
and resume business immediately. Assessments
will make good all impairments ol capital. Act
with promptness accordingly.
