THURSDAY MOKNING. OCT. 26.
CloalffK E»rly To-Day-
Wo were handed, yesterday, a Ji*t compmmg
some forty of the moot prominent bn “° a “
hocM of this city, who agree to *••**•*'
demo St ono o’clock this afternoon, in order to
allow their employes to visit the Fair Grounds.
Wo hope all will do it, and that to-dey msy be
• gals day indeed.
Fair Gronntie—Wednesday Evening.
Thi, has been a lively and satisfactory day -
tbs grounds. The attendanoe has been very
mod. Yesterday the estimate at tho gate was
seven thousand. To-day there have been about
ton th<ir--"d on the grounds, and the moat
eheerfaland well satisfied assemblage, I have
aeen for a long time. After all, tho best sight
of the whole la these intelligent and beautiful
faces and well clad and graceful forme. It is a
floe population we have in old Georgia, and we
ought to be thankful for it Such a people aro
bound to asaert tbamaelvea In doe time, though
they may be the victim* of a temporary repres
sion. We shell be a great people yet-no mat
ter what atrategems of political devilment may
bo set on foot againat us. This well dressed
throng of ten thousand people scattered through
these ample and magniddent grounds—crowd
ing the taatefnl structure* of Central Park—all
good natured and happy is worth travelling a
hundred miles to see.
I have been looking a UUle at the machinery
department today, and will try to finish my ob-
i. [rations to-morrow. There is much to (ee,
and to me it ia gratifying to observe elegant
ladias interesting themselves ao much in mo-
.h.nieal achievement*. I do not know, after
all, that oar women are not the moat practical
part of the genus homo.
Outside of the great machinery had three
portable steam engines are contesting for so.
premacy: J. 0. Hoadley A Co., of Lawrence,
Hum, represented by Ur. Crockett, of this
elty; W. E. Tanner Jk Go., Metropolitan Work*,
Richmond, Vs., and H. A F. Blaney, of Z in Ot
tilia, Ohio. Each of these manufacturer* are
well represented. H. B. Brown Is the agent of
the Metropolitan Works in this city, and drives
all the machinery in the mechanical department
with a forty horse power engine made by W. E.
Tanner A Co.
Mr. Crockett eaja Hoadley's Engine* are the
heat. With one of these ho 1* driving Evart’e
patent Shingle Machine*, and showing how
shingles ean be sawed ont with a smooth sur.
faoe, at the rate of fourteen thoneand a day.
Mr. Crockett also shows his horse power—a
very simple and effective contrivance at a cost
of a hundred dollar*, anJ he claims that with
foar negroes be pnt it on the gronnd, bnilt a
shad and went to ginning ootton, all in on hour
and a quarter.
Among the numerous steam engines exhib
ited, It Harris’ BoUry, which runs on tho prin-
eipl* of a water wheel, the eteam being applied
directly to the buckets of a two-foot wheel, un
der a pressure of about eighty pounds to the
inch. It is a very simple machine, ooeting
a boat a hundred dollars to the horse-power, and
works like a beaver. This is exhibited by the
Brown Cotton Gin Company, of New London.
The Findlay Brothers have erected * temple
or pavilion on their own account and show three
splendid stesm engines in operation—two up
right and one horisontal of eight horse power.
On* of these engines is running a Wheeler A
Wilson sewing machine at a rate little slower
then lightning.
Three or fonr ootton preaes arc represented
in the neighborhood—the Findlay anti-friction
and Sehofield’a—which are screw presses, and
the Smyth And Utley lever possesses. I will
apeak of them to-morrow.
Among the displays made by merchants on
the second floor of the ball we notloed the fol
lowing :
W. A. Hopson A Co. have a very elegantly
arranged stand, and show a stock of dress goods
which will raise envy in the gentle bosoms of
the belle*.
In the eame line J. B. Bose A S. T. Coleman
make a fine display.
8. Waxelbaam A Co. have tried themselves
In the way of a grand oollectlon of embroideries,
with marked aoooeas.
Kendrick A Son, of Chicago, have a riob dis
play of carpet*. J. U. Hull.rock Jr Oe., v>f IBS
same place, ahow a case of fats.
Guilford A HiU, of Mtoon, show a splendid
colleotion of pianos and organs. Lndden A
Bates, of Savannah, exhibit some richly orna-
Tlic State .Vsrlonltnral Exposition
The third day closed with cloudless skies and
a balmy atmosphere, which drew immense
crowds to the grounds in the afternoon to see
Weston walk, and witness the balloon escca-
tion. The great pedestrian is lithe, compact,
and graceful in his physique, without an ounce
of superfluous flesh, and withal has a ■
mlcnanee. He walked with great
and rapidity, making his five miles in 58
Oarhart A Cord have a case of plated ware
for the table, earpenter’e and joiner’s findings,
and table and other entlery.
John W. Burke A Co. era represented in
a fine show of books and fancy goods in their
line, indnding ingenions toys. Their toy steam
enginoa iu operation arreat tho attention of
many paaiiera.
Young America Engine Company makes n
display of their trophies of victory in many a
eoat eat.
The second floor is particularly noticeable
for ill rich display of embroideries of every
stylo and variety. Their nnmbcr is legion and
a wealth of taale, skill and labor baa been ex
pended on them. Oar space ia inadequate for
even a meager catalogue of these entries and
many of tho moat meritorious and elaborate ex
hibit no name. They come from numerous
oountie* and are worthy of the highest eulogium.
They inolnde a wide range of articles from
Afghans and Fenian ooven down to very small
article*, and are in every oonoeivable stylo and
character. There is amusement for many hours
in examining and examlng this largo and splen
did collection, which ineludea many hundreds
of artiolea.
Among the curiosities of foreign production
to be seen on this floor is a caso exhibited by
Mrs, Wo. B. Johnston, filled with delicate carv
ings in ivory, stag-bom and wood, gathered
during* continental tour In Europe. These
are ao minute and delicate in their lines that
they need to be examined throngh a magnify
ing gists. Among them is a set of chessmen
in ivory all of which oocld be contained in a
homeopathists piU box. Another work of simi
lar character is a card Ublo in mosaio and con
structed of 7,000 pieces of wood.
Floral Hall was crowded throughout the entire
dsy, with the bounty and fashion of this section
and presented an animated and beautiful scene.
Between the two great halls tho United States
Band discoursed excellent music—playing seve
ral operatic pieces during the day, and halls and
grounds resounded with the hum of thousands
of voices. I am going to drop the more fancy
part of tho display and examine tho machinery
for a time.
Col. Herbert Fielder.
Oar readers will peruso with interest the
brief sketch contained in to-day's paper, of the
life and career of this estimable gentleman,
whose name is prominently associated with tho
next gubernatorial canvass.
Tho TxLxaaarE -Urn Messenger is the organ
of no individual for office, bnt It affords ns
pleasure to enlighten the people as to the quali
fications and antecedents of those from whom
their future rulers may be chosen. Should it
devolve upon our talented fellow townsman
CoL Tho*. Hardeman, or Gen. Colquitt tho
soldier and gentleman, or CoL Fielder, a self
made man and gifted barrister, to be the stand
ard bearer of the Democracy in the campaign
against Bollock and Kadi cal corruption, we shall
be equally content. In the hand of any ono cf
these gentlemen, the destinies of Georgia will
be safe for the next four yean. We are per
sonally and intimately acquainted with CoL
Fielder, and know him to be possessed of sterl
ing integrity and a cultivated and superior in-

or Georgia would find in him a fearless advo-
CAto And wis© Knd prudent executive.
Jasrmt Scrairoa Cccut-Bj an order else-
where published, it will be aeen, that the Fall
Term of thi* court has been adjourned over to
nine o clock, a. of Wednesday, the thir
teenth day of December next.
MiBr.iio.ES or Motet) Bichimm.—Two ereb
known Confederate officers of Humphrey Marl
Bhall'e command were married yesterday, to-wit)
Col. Tbumas Johnson, a wealthy bacbelor, aged
alxly, to Miss Lizzie Feters, niece of Supreme
Judge Peters, and Dr. J. M. Woodfrd, tho tall
surgeon with the flowing red hair and whiskers,
to Mrs. Lydo Larne, daughter of Bev. John
Holton.—Ko.tuckian.
CoL Johnson has long been a traveler to
Georgia, and ie well known in the State.
About 5 r. XL, the inflation of the huge bal
loon was completed, and aoon after it rose
gracefully In tho air with it* female voyagenr to
the height of several hundred feet drifting
slowly awsy in the direction of the city. When
over the densest portion of the grove in front of
Floral Hall, the monster began to gravitate to
wards the earth and finnaliy lodged amid the
boughs of a lofty oak.
The crowd rushed pell mell to the spot to as
certain the fate of the dauntless aeronaut, amid
the wildest oonfnsion and excitement There
she hnng suspended in mid air unharmed, and
apparently free from fright or agitation,
few minntea sufficed to effect her release
throngh tho agency of a ladder, and the sturdy
arms of several individuals, who had clambered
np tho trunk of the tree. The fair adventurer
was reoeivedon terra firma again with enthnsi-
nstic rounds of ApplAoso.
After nightfall a splendid display of fire works
terminated the evonta and pleasures of the day,
investing with rare beanty and brilliancy the
Grounds with their moving panorama of living
objects.
To^sy it is proposed to eloeo the stores cf
the dty after one o’clock, and the regatta will
doubtless draw vast multitudes. Who will say
onr Fair is not a splendid success ?
The Sale or Fools.
To forestall misrepresentation or animadver
sions from any source, we are authorized by
General Colquitt to state that no betting has
taken place, or will be tolerated on the grounds
of the Georgia Agricultural Association, while
tho exhibition continue*.
On Thursday afternoon the exposition on the
part of the State Society cloaca, bnt will be con-
tinned for several day longer by other parties
for the entertainment of the multitudes in at'
ice. The sale of pools, therefore, as ad
vertised, is In no wsy connected with the opera
tions of the Executive Committee.
We trust this will be satisfactory to thoeo
who have been disposed to charge the Associa
tion with participation in the "sporting ring,”
which is an invariable accompaniment of all
large popular gatherings.
DzuanzsT A Woodbujt.—These gentlemen
haves magnificent carriage repository on Broad
way, New York, with a branch in the city of
. A large nnmber of manufactories and
workshops aro constantly employed in fill
ing their orders, and keeping np the supply of
vehicles which are offered for sale. Some of
their carriages are gorgeously finished and fitted
np, and are not to be excelled by any of the
royal equipages of the old country. Their prices
range from $200 to $400.
Messrs. Woodruff A Demarest have on exhi
bition at the Fair a large and splendid variety
of baggies and other vehicles, constructed in
the moat fashionable style and with the latest
improvements. Hundreds of patrons through
out the South can testify to the exoellence and
durability of the work they turn out. Mr.
Woodruff's homo is in Georgia, and ho is enti
tled to great credit for the enterprise tnd tact
displayed in the oonduct of his immense estab-
iL Bead tho extensive advertisement of
these gentlemen.
The Soumwxsnnm IUileoad.—We are an
thorized to say that the statement in our local
column, yesterday, to the effect that this road
was running neither extra trains, nor extra
coach oe to its regular trains this week, is entire
ly incorrect. And furthermore that the road
has given every man, woman and child that has
wanted to come to Macon this week ample op
portunity of so doing. So far from there having
been any passengers left behind, the trains, as
we are informed, have not been uncomfortably
crowded. The extra train is run to and from
the Fair Ground for the special convenience of
those who wish to come into or leave the city
by it.

The first throngh passengers to Ecfanla from
Coinmbns, via the Mobile and Girard, and
Montgomery and Enfanla railroads, went throngh
on Monday. The time is about five hours.
Coinmbns is receiving cotton, this season,
from Tallapoosa county, Alabama.
We dip the following items from the Coinm
bns San, of Tuesday:
Death or Captais Bhadtoed.—The death of
this young man, son of ex-Governor Bradford,
of Maryland, occurred in Baltimore a few days
ago. He, for several months, was the Provost
Marshal of Augusts. He was well known by all
Coinmbns people who were in Bichmond the
earlier years of the revolution.
Attacked nr Aitoflext.—Yesterday at 11 a.
, as Mr. A. D. Brown, Sr., the well known
and esteemed inventor, was working at his lathe
in Goetehins’ Steam Planing Mill, ho was sud
denly stricken with on apoplectio fit, to which
he is subject. He fell forward on the lathe,
catting his head in several places. For a time,
it was thought ho was dead, and his family was
sent for. So strong were the convulsions that
it took several negro men to carry him to the
express wagon in which he was conveyed to his
residence, above the northern common. We
have not sinoo beard from him. He is a broth
er to the proprietor of the Brown House in Ma
con.
Mrs. Mabry, aged 80 years, died in Monroe
county last Taeeday, on the old homestead set
tled by hor husband, and where they had lived
together nearly fifty years.
The United States District Court commenced
its fall session at Savannah, Monday morning.
The following named persons were sworn in os
grand jurors:
Drury Bambo, Decatur county, foreman; W.
W. Griger, Bryan; John B. Brown, Mnseogeo;
David lteddisb, Appling; Albert Brown, Chat
ham; JamesT. Gloover, Twiggs; B. F. Brnn-
bury, Mitchell; Francis H- Massoy, Thomas;
Blantin Hardeman, Jones; Jacob F. Fnghsley,
Tattnall; Thomas Cawthorn, Upson, Thomas
J. Davis, Crawford; David S. Bagley, Somter;
Thomas J. Naylor, Chatham; Emannel Men
der, Chatham; Frederick Sandrne, Chatham;
Agrippa Whittle, Chatham: James L. Fabien,
Chatham.
The traverse jurors are as follows:
J. F. Childs, Monroe county, foreman; W.
W. Mnrphy, Jefferson; S. Kenan, Baldwin;
Daniel Gardner, Bichmond; James A. Collins,
Mitchell; Benjamin O. Davis, Fearce; Syrns

fee; Peter W. Reddish, Webster; Thomas 0.
Morgan, Bryan; W. H. Jernlgan, Clay; L. T.
Whitcomb, Chatham.
The Savannah Republican, of Tuesday, says
letters were received in that city, on Monday,
stating that serious disturbances between the
people of Liberty county and tho negroes had
ocenrred on Taylor’s Creek, and that the latter
wore marching on Walthonrville. It also stated
that troops had been called for, which latter
report is discredited by the News, of same date,
on the authority of the Federal commander at
Savannah.
From the Savannah News, of Tuesday, we get
the following:
The DeMostmolus Attais—Fcbtheb Fab-
xicclabs Di ins Mattes.—From Major Arthur,
commanding a detachment of United States
troops, which were dispatched on yesterday to
the scene of the recent troubles on the DeMont-
mollin plantation to investigate the matter, we
learn that the difficulty was not of snet^s serious
nature os was at first supposed.
It appears from the statement of the Major,
that the negroes who did the shooting went to the
plantation armed with legal doenments issued
from a negro justice in Blnffton, for the pro
pose of dispossessing Mr. DeMontmoUin, and
meeting with resistance, fired upon the whites,
as stated yesterday, wounding them alL Mr.
DeMontmoUin and Kent are bnt slightly wound
ed. Mr. Slyer, however, is supposed to be mor
tally injured.
The white gentlemen were oonvey to Blnfficn,
and are now under arrest, in pursuance of pa
pers from the negro magistrate, and until their
release is effected, a correct history of the mat
ter is hardly possible.
The Southern Recorder says an alarming
epidemic has broken ont in that city, which ia
remarkable because of tha mysterious novelty
of the disorder. "Its first symptom is trith-
drairal jrom the Good Templirt, after which a
certain unsteadiness of gait, flash about tho
eyes, apparent dizziness of held, an air of gen
eral dissatisfaction and sneaky expression of
face supervene.”
On proposition for a town subscription of
v 15,000 to the Hilliard Institute and Honroo
rcrna.e College, at Forsyth last Saturday, 67
affirmative, and 9 negative votes were cast.
We quote, as follows, from the Monroe Ad
vertiser of Tuesday:
Ixfobtaxt Judicial Actios.—Upon tho pet:
tion of Messrs. Wiley Fleming, Wm. J. Dumas,
n H. ZeRncr, John T. Crowder, Guilford G.
Hynt, O. S. Woodward, W. B. Meek, J. V.
Childs, J. H. Evans, and John Shannon and
others, considered by Judge Green in Cham
bers, an order has been issued restraining for
the present, Moses Potts, Ordinary, Stephen B.
Potts,Treasurer, Mr. Swann,TaxCollector,!frcm
paying any of the outstanding county script in
the hands of W. L. Lumpkin, B. Pye A Son, and
Wm. McCommon, and also prohibiting the Or
dinary from paying any further sum of money
as bonus to secure protection for the notes of
the county. The **ma order also prevents
Messrs. Pye, Lampkin and McCommon from
taking tnj steps to enforce collection. The de
fendants are ordered to show cause in Corot, on
the 20th of November next, wby a permanent
writ of prohibition should not issue as prayed
for. The order was granted on the I8ih inst
Bobbzbt aso Absox.—On Tuesday night last,
the grocery store of Mr. Willi* Russel, at Gra-
baU, Jones county, was plundered, and the
building, with the remaining contents, fired and
burned. The goods stolen were found in pos-
seesiGn of a couple of negroes, the next day,
one of whom was shot and killed for resisting on
effort to arrest. The other negro, named Green
Mayfield, alias Norris, was arrested, bnt after
wards escaped, and is still at large. Green has
long been considered a desperate character in
Monroe and Butts, and many of our people will
rejoice to leant that he has been bagged.
Chicago ivd the South.—The Rome Com
mercial states that in 1866 a gentleman wrote
from Georgia to a minister in Chicago, request
ing his assistance in soliciting funds in that city
to rebuild one of the Georgia churches, burnt
by Sherman's vandals, and received the follow-
ing in response:
"I am at this time a minister in the Old
School Presbyterian Church, and D sent
me your petition that I might try to get some
thing for your aid m rebuilding yonr church.
But I had no heart to do anything with it. /
fear the people mould rather re-bum you than
to aid you. Small, sadly small, ia the Christian
charity in this part of tho world. Fanaticism
seems to reign and riot, while hatred and mro-
derons malice would hold still their bloody car-
nlvaL"
Letters for ft in, Young, Albany, and William
Granlro, Americas, are held for postage in the
Savannah office.
The impression prevails at Savannah that
Robb, the present Collector of Customs there,
will lose his official head, on November 1st,
and that Honorable Joshua HiU, and other
Georgia Radicals have named one James Atkins
of Atlanta, as his successor.
Last Sunday was a rather lively day in Borne.
There were two marriages, one first-class fight,
numerous small skirmishes, and a “new depart
ure” for the West, by several emigrants who
will wish they hadn’t, considerably, before this
time next year.
Daring the course of a friendly talk at Borne
last Saturday night, between Mr. Goo. Rogers
and Mr. Robinson, the latter had the thickness
of his sknll tested by a bar of iron held in Bog-
a’ hand.
The Borne Courier, of Tuesday, says:
The Ku-Klux Betobe the United States
Dxbtbiot Couet.—We understood that the par-
tree who were so indecently zealous before our
last grand jroies, to get bills against the siUy
boys in Livingston District, for their drunken
frolic, have at last succeeded in having the
United States Grand Jury, at Atlanta, to find
bills; and now the yonng men who so thought
lessly engaged in that unfortunate frolic, will
have to be outcasts and fagitives in a strange
land, or brave the horrors of a Northern prison.
Tho Atlanta Son, of yesterday, says:
One Explanation Suggested.—Some of the
friends of Gov. BnUock suggest that Mr. Kimball
has overreached and deceived him; that ho re
lied on Kimball’s financial ability and accommo
dated him with bonds to a large amount, which
ought not to have left the Govemors's bands—
relying on him to be able to take ont of “soak"
and return them to tho Executive office, if they
should ever be called for, end that he cannot
now come to time. This is suggested.
Tlie Savannah Fair, on the 33d of
November.
We extract the following from the New York
Tribune, of the 21st:
THE BEST “SEW DFFABliinE."
The Industrial Association of Georgia'
(newly organized) will bold an Exposition com
mencing on the 23d of November, at Savannah,
the most flourishing of Southern cities, Atlanta
possibly excepted. Tho sctnsry of this Associ
ation ia Colonel H. D. Capers, who won his rank
in some of the hardest battles of onr late Civil
War—of course, on the Rebel side. From his
address announcing the Exposition, we quotes*,
follows:
‘The many embarrassments under which the
friends of this enterprise have labo.cd, assure
them that there are those among ns who, satis
fied with their present surroundings and ill-
disposed to b* disturbed in their reveries among
tfiA raaoI 1 Aotiono of ilio yfiSl* iwnil from what
they are pleased to style ‘innovations upon es
tablished customs.’ For such, we have no word
of harsh criticism. Their contentment is a suf
ficient reason for the exhibition cf the utmost
charity, and, if onr department of fossils can
offer them any entertainment, we will provide
for them while wo aro meeting the demands of
a moro useful and progressive class of oar fel
low-citizens. The Industrial Association looks
to this latter class for its support, and, in cher
ishing a proper respect for the memories of the
past, would take in a full realization of the
present, and give every aid toward tho accom
plishment of an advanced progress in the future.
“Inspired, then, with the same spirit which,
from the ashes of car cities and the humiliation
of defeat, has raised our proud Commonwealth
to a position of prosperity and comparative in
dependence, we of Savannah, the commercial
metropolis of Georgia, would join hands with
our brethren in this onward inarch to a greater
prosperity than has yet been realized.
“Onr Exposition is designed alike for the re
flection of progress in every department of in
dustrial life among the people of Georgia, and
among those from abroad whose commercial
relations we desire not only to cultivate, bnt to
retain. The material interests of the city of
Savannah and of onr State, the cultivation and
the encouragement of a free interchange and
exchange of opinions and benefits between the
producer and consumer, are objects we desire
“The city of Savannah, with tha advantages
of her geographical position and her present
and prospective communications with the great
Weal, under the sway of wise legislation and
prudent municipal regulation, and, above all,
recognizing the protecting care of a merciful
Providence, whose wisdom is above the specu
lations of finite creatures, has prospered and
continued to prosper until now her commercial
relations with the world have given to her a
prominent position in the front rank of Ameri-
can seaports.
“In fostering this prosperity, the Industrial
Association would encourage in onr midst and
invites the establishment of manufacturing
and mechanical enterprises of every kind. Oro
facilities for importing and exporting, and oro
ready access to the inexhaustible mines of
wealth in the interior of oro great country,
should make of oro city an emporium not alone
of trade and commerce, bnt a place in which
the ring of the anvil, the hnm of machinery,
the active spindle, and the busy loom, shall all
unite in a grand chorus, eulogistic of oro enter
prise and prophetio of a great future.”
Knowing nothing of Col. Capers’ polities,
we presume he votes what in Georgia is callod
the “Conservative” or “White Man’s” ticket;
and yet, on the strength of the above address,
we pronounce him admirably reconstructed, and
fit to take a freeman's part in directing the Na
tion’s policy and impelling her on the path of
progress and well-being. We urge onr Northern
manufacturers and artisans to be liberally rep
resented at the Georgia Exposition, believing
that their own interest and that of the whole
country will thereby be promoted.
