Telegraph & Messenger. THURSDAY MORNING. NOV. 1871. The Insurance Babble In Chicago. There is too much light-for some folks— being let In npon insurance metiers in Chicago, end how that particular business was earned on In some Instances in that fast city. Aooord ing to a detailed statement in the leading col umn of the Chicago Time*, nine men of great wealth in Chicago, together with others who seem to hare followed their lead with disgrace ful alacrity, oondocted the business of one of the largest inanranoe companies in that city with the moat reckless disregard of the interests of their customers, and solely with an eye to their own emolument The Company was or- ganized air tees yearn ago, with a capital of 9200,000, but of this ann only fire cents on the dollar were paid in—in other words the Company began business on a capital of $10,000; It immediately insured vast amounts of pro perty. and in a few yean had assumed risks of millions; after the Lake street fire of 1856 the remainder of the capital was "made up from the earnings of tha Company;’’ and it has tinoe divided, upon the original investment of $10,000 the handsome cum of $1,800,000. The risks held by this Company at the time of the lata disaster in Chicago amounted to $3,000,000— and the total assets are $400,000! The remain der of the anm of $1,800,000 has gone into the pockets of the corporators. Here is a plain story, told with great circumstantiality by a leading Chicago journal; and it will serve both as an illustration of the utterly reckless man ner in which some of the insurance companies have transaotod their business, and as a warn ing to Companies snd State Superintendent* for the fature. Bollock’s object. The Atlanta Sun says Bnlloek's idea ia to oorne back at the bead of a military foree, sus pend the writ of habeas corpus and atop Legis lative investigation into hia performances. Evidently the Bute of Georgia must bo in an Inrarreotionary condition when a loyal Gover nor baa to seek personal safety in leg bail! Betides all this, Georgia, if abe votes at all in the next Presidential election, is not going to give a loyal vote. If Bullock will give Grant a Champagne Bath or two out of the contingent fund, he may bring him to this view of the matter. Who knows? Agricultural Appointment*. In this appreciation of General Yonng by bis fel low-citizens of Georgia, we are glad to note tbe assurance of their satisfaction—a satisfac tion deservedly secured—with his oonrse, not only as Representative in Congress from the Seventh District of his State, bnt also as a member of the “Resident Congressional Com mittee,'’ and in his more comprehensive capacity as a member of the Democratic party of tho «oonntry. Aware, as we are, of General Young’s claims upon his friends and upon the party in Georgia in connec tion with his political services, we avail ourself of this occasion to wish for him that suc cess in his contest before tbe Legislature of Georgia for Senator which ho has substantially earned for his fidelity to principle and devotion to the beet interests of the Democraoy. We have been not inattentive spectators, here at the seat of the Government, of Gen. Young’s course in Congress, and in view of the confidence and partiality which his people exhibit in thus bring ing him forward for one of the highest offices, if not the higheat office, to which a citizen of a State may aspire at the hands of his fellow-citi zens, we recognize the fact that his conduct here as a Representative in Congress has met with that substantial vindication at home which at once the best evidence of the capacity, in tegrity and devotion of a pnblie servant, and of his fitness for any higher sphere of dnty to which his constituents may desire to call him. having, therefore, commanded this confi dence as a member of the Democratic party. State and National, and an active advocate of Democratic principles, General Young's claims upon the Georgia Legislatnre can be safely left in the hands of his friends. There are many dibUngaiabed Georgians who wonld fill tbe seat * r fiau«d States Senator with dignity to them ivea and with credit to their State. From the ranks of these patriotic and worthy citizens the election of General Young for United States Senator would, we foel oonvinced, meet with the hearty approbation of the party. BOARD.
