THURSDAY MORNING. NOV. 3. 1871.
AiiHdolM or WiwblBKlon nod Andre.
Many tsui uo I made my flrat visit tojj wb*
lngton's'headquarters, at old Tappan Town,
■boot half a mile from the Sovenly ox Honsm
Tbe ancient odifleo was more than a hundred
and twenty year, old, and, although built of
atone, aeemed almost tottering tolls Wh It
had four roofs, one on tho top of the other, and
from the first lower layer of eedar aWngles I
nelected powdering specimens, which ptdled out
easily, and hare them now among my Heroin
ticnary relic*. _
I entered with my friend, wboae gueatl was
at the time, aud who was a resident of the iia-
mediste n<igU>orbood. We were courteously
welcomed by its then occupants, two elderly
ladles, who were born in the house.
Nothing could bo In more perfect keeping
with the mansion than these two venerab.e wo-
men. Their name was Van Brnyck; and I was
the more interested in than Iwcanse I bad re
cently become acquainted in hew York with a
relative of theirs of the same name, a promising
young painter, who was fast increasing his rep
utation as a very natural artb* and a koon ob
server of the picturesque. One of hia moet
I soon saw, was a moat life
like picture of this tamo old

old, and her lister waa seventy-fire. They were
very lively for persona ao agod, and were obUg-

“Oh, yea—many and many a time, »he an

bold me in his lap. I remember it just as well
aa if it was but yesterday. He waa a lovely man,
General Washington was. And bore, ahe con
tinued, going to and opening a wide clipboard,
“be used to keep Ida things/ Hieee blue-and-
white chonov caps nod sArmen bo nwd to drink
out of; and here's the very bowl be used to
make hit wine aangareo in; and they used to
pam it around from one officer to mother when
they'd oome to see him; they helped themselves.
He seen a good deal of oompany, Gen. Wash
ington did.
“Did you ever tea Major Andre I" I inquired.
“Ob, yea—mora'n fifty times. He was a
beautiful man. He kissed me twice. I was a
little girl then. I seen him the very morning
they took him on the top of the hill to hang
him. The day before, in the morning, I took
him up some handsome, ripe peachea. He
thanked me ao kind, and broke one of 'em open
and put it into hie month and tasted it; but
somehow or 'nother be didn't seem to have no

The reported discovery of the North Pole by
a German expedition has finally been explained
preeiaely as the World asaomed that it wonld
be. The expedition did not disoover the Pole,
and the sum and substanco of wbat it aooom-
pliahed araaiimply the discovery of an open
ohannel between Spitsbergen and Nova Zembla,
which it waa annniaed might poaaibly lead into
an open polar sea. If this channel is always
free from Toe, and if it does lead to an open sea,
the Germans may claim the credit of having
discovered the true path to the Pole. It re
mains, however, to lie proved that Ihia channel
waa anything more than a temporary opening of
probable that any German will reach tho Pole
before Captain Hall shall havo planted the
Ameriean flag at the precise end of tho earth'a
axis—provided there bo any thing to plant it on.
