Telegraph & Messenger. FRIDAY MORNING. NOV. 3, 1871. fVanU to Sell Ont. Tie press telegrams authoritatively annonnoe that Great nnli to sell oat his interest in the Senece Send Stone business. This is either in tended to bluff the teles about the enormous success of that speculation, or to raise heavier stakes for the great San Domingo enterprise. As a shrewd, money making man—with sharp and persistent eye to the main chance, Gen. Grant Is the first President who ercr illus trated the trading, thrifty and shifty spirit of the universal Yankee Nation. His worst ene mies are oompelled to admit that in pert of one Presidential term, be has accumulated a large fortune, while the whole line of Presidents from George Washington down, (Martin tan Boren only excepted,) went out of office poorer than when they went in. Jefferson and Jack, eon were sooh bad bands at trading and specu lation that eight years of the Presidency broke both of them- Jeff never got over it and died insolvent. Old Frank Blair loaned Jackson enough to go home to the Hermitage upon, and start afresh, and the old gentleman, who had a good farm, abboored debt and was a close econ omist, worked out at last. Either of them might have made millions, but you see they lacked the ability, or the disposi li on, or the taste to doit. They Sacked the shifty, handy, horse-trading turn of Grant, and in con- sequenee, the country bad to mourn over two grand old patriots with empty pockets and no balance to credit in bank. This spectacle, as Mr. Forney would asy, was "discreditable to the nation.” It seemed to lend oolorto that old stereotyped slender about the* ‘iogrstitude of Re- pabliot." Grant early determined to avoid this unfor tunate course. In s little over two years of the Presidency he is said, to have piled up a large fortune. His great farm in Missouri alone, with all iU outfit,is valued at *300,000, and his other property would probably raise a sum total of t.sif a million. Extend his term to the 4th of March, 1877, and he will retire probably worth three or four millions of dollars—a noble illus tration of national gratitude and sharp dealing. Cotton Nfeafage. The Tribune of last Saturday gravely an nounces that it has been developed In the United Stales Court of Clsims that about one-half (ho value of the Bon them cotton seized by govern ment agents daring the wtr, has been stolen. The prooeeds of sales retnmed were thirty mil lions, the result of sales at 29 oenls a pound, when the ootton was worth 75 cents. The swind ling wss effectod*by collusion with purchasers; but the claimants of the ootton refuse to aooept the prioes obtained. Large amounts of this oot ton belonged to British subjects, whose clsims for reclamation under tbo mixed commission treaty will in thia way aubjeot the government to very heavy losses. That la a pity. But when government goes into the buainen of stealing, bow can they expect their tools and instruments will be honest. Tbo farther development of these ootton stealing transactions, it is olaimed, will show that (he Radical cotton ring has swin dled the government out of about forty millions of dollars. Fdsoxai..—W* omitted—inadvertently of oourao—yesterday to express our pleasure at meeting, the day before, in our office, Dr. Henry F. Andrews, the worthy editor of the Washing ton Gazette, who hss been In Mscon as a dele gate to the annual meeting of the Grand Lodge of Georgia. We were pleased to see him look ing quite robust; and to know that he admires Macon, and especially our Fair Grounds, very mueh. He is • msn of taste, though a trifle wrong headed on some pluses of latter day polities. Geast's Thioloot.—'The sentimental the ology of Grant's thanksgiving message is uncer emoniously assailed. The atyle of the docu ment is little abort of mirsoulous. Los dos OosTuntmosa ron Cnicioo.—The Mausio House fund for Chicago amounted, last Hstnrdsy, to A42.850, or in the neighbor hood of *280,000. Basdstoxs.—A disappointed Radical office- seeker says Grant is the impossible man in scripture. The children asked him for bread and be did not even give them the stone, but kept it himself, and oompellod the government to buy it of him at high prioes. Tna Nzw Yonx Ellction takes place next Monday. The World thinks the Democrats will carry the State. They have taken the bull of official oorrupUon by the horns with such vigor and impartiality as to restore the confidence of the people In Demoormtlo Integrity and patriot ism.
