It is rarely that any of hU contemporaries gets ahead of the enterprising publisher of this capital monthly—as a vast majority cf the ladies will decide. Fust Stuset Chchch.—We understand that th’s Church, just completed, will be dedicated Sunday, the 19th instant. The ladies of the congregation are requested to meet at the Chnreh to-day at fonr o'clock. The officiary of tbe Church, in behalf of the congregation, have requested the pastor to preach the sermon on the intereoting occasion. Don't Foboet that the Sheriff's sales take place to-day in front of tbs new Court-house. Some valuable property ia to be sold, and bar gains msy be obtained by being on hand. Also the property belonging to the estate of General Howell Cobb is to be sold to-dsy. It is desirable property and will doubtless attract quite a crowd of bidders. Re bout.—On Saturday night last tbe grooery atore of Mr. Slaughter, on Fourth street, WAS entered and robbed of three dollars in small bills. A youngster named Stephen Gonldsby was suspected of the crime, and upon being ar rested confessed his gnilL He now enjoys (he hospitalities of the county, quietly and patienUy waiting for the grand jnry to reassemble. They were both drinking, which war no donbt ibe moving caureof tbe trouble. No hopes are entertained of Dewber ry's recovery. Runaway.—On Sunday evening a borse ran- awsy with a buggy iu which were two of Mayor Huff's children and a nurse. After running a short distance the boggy struck a fenoe, throw ing them therefrom. All were slightly hart It was a narrow escape, and is another evidence of the folly of trusting children behind a borse at any time without a skillful driver to manage him. TkRBIBXE CATASTCOrnE AT MONTGOMTBT, A LA. At a late hour last night we learned from tbe operators in the telegraph office the following particulars of a sad accident whioh happened in Montgomery last night: The Radioala were holding a jubilee in Exchange Square over tbe election that had taken place during the day. Anvil’s were being loaded with powder and fired off when one burst, killing and fatally wound ing six men, among them Mr. Campbell, gen- oral ticket agent for the Montgomery and West Point Railroad. The most mysterious part of the affair ia that not a negro nor Radical was hurt. Intense excitement and confusion pre vailed at the time the dispatch was sent, and it was almost impossible to get the particulars. pieee of the exploded anvil passed through the balcony of the telegraph effioo on whioh the messenger was standing, barely missing him. He was knocked down by the jar. We suppose all Ibe particulars will be heard by telegraph to-day. New Law Finn.—We inadvertently omitted at the time their card was first published, to call attention to the law prrtnersh<p recently formed between Messrs. B. A W. B. Hill, of this city. On the principle, however, of better late then never, we desire to do so now. and to say that the junior partner of the firm is one of tbe most promising additions to the legsl fra tersity that we have known in many years. He has been a close student, and has thoroughly trained and cultivated a mind naturally very strong and clear. Ha has great perseverance, quick perception and high principle. If we are not greatly deceived bo will prove himself emi nently worthy to wear the mantle now resting ao deservedly on the shoulders of his honored father—a veteran in the profession of whom it needless to say one word here. Fall of honors be has well won them all. “ One more unfortunate. Weary of breath. Rashly importunate. Gme to her death.” On Sunday last at eleven o'clock Miss Lizzie Woodall departed this fife. On the Friday even ing previous she bad taken a large quantity of morphine for tbe purpose of putting an end to her existence. Her history is that of many who have gone before her into the presence of the greet Judge. Truly it saddens the heart to think upon such things. She was a beautiful girl and was once, no doubt, foil of all sweet hopes and bright with innocence. Bat she gave her heart to one who only meditated upon her rain—she trusted him blindly ted waked from ber mad dresaj • mice 1 woman. Tortured by the pangs of conscience and the frowns of ail who met her, in a fit of desperation she at length resolved to risk the hidden mysteries of the unseen world. Mad to life's history, GUI ro death's mystery, riwift to be burled. Anywhere, anywhere, Out of tbe world. The immediate circumstance* which led to tub rash set we know not of. The secret per haps died with her. Bat while we condemn her sin end hold it in abhorrence, let as cast the mantle of charity around her memory; and es pecially let us bear in mind the injunction of the apo.tle, “Lit him who thinketh he stand- eth beware, ieat he fall." We are no apologists for crime in any form, but are always ready to forgive, knowing that we, too, are human and that none are free from the wily attacks of the old serpent. Then, while horror-stricken at the rath act which burls an immortal soul into eter nity, let us “write her judgment in the sand, Ownins her weakness, Her evil bebeavior. And leaving with meekness s to her Her sins t r Saviour. New Finn.—Messrs. Murder near Montezuma.—We heard yester day the particulars of a most brutal and cold blooded murder which occurred near Monte zuma a few days ago. A Ur. Scott had been to Montezuma and gotten brutally drank. In tho afternoon, as he was reluming home in bis wagon, ho met a negro man and woman going to a field in which they were employed picking cotton. Without any provocation whatever he cocked his pistol, which was already in his band, and fired it off toward tbe negroes. The bail passed through the bowels of the negro woman, inflicting a fata! wound from which she died in a few hours. Tho negro man (her husband) came immediately to town and had a warrant taken out for Scott. He was arrested by the sheriff, and so great was the feeling of indigna tion among both white and black, that a guard had to be placed over him daring the night to prevent hit being lynched. A preliminary trial was had the 3ay following and he was commit ted to jail to await trial at the Superior Court. Scott avowed an entire ignorance of the occur rence of which none who saw him when he left town had any doubt. We would not prejudge his ease, but it hss ever been our opinion thit drunkenness was no excuse for murder. No bard feeling bad ever existed between Soott and the negro murdered; and bad he met a white man or woman the probabilities are that he would as readily have shot at them as at the negroes. The whites of the oounty are very much shocked and deeply deplore the occurrence. New Yore, November G.—The World states that the entire State government of South Car olina is in New York. The American Bank Note Company printed twenty million in bonds for Hoses Kempton, the Financial Agent of the State. It ia said that Governor Scott admits the bonds were printed, bnt denies that all were issued; bnt he doosnot state the amount issued. Kempton, it is assorted, brings a claim against the State for services and commissions amount ing to four millions, and other State officers have not dared to resist payment thereof, though much of it is for renewals whioh were credited as to commissions on new loans. It is said these commissions more than swallowed tbe original loan. The expenses of the last Legislature were $800,000, and have not been paid. The World concludes by stating that its information is from a source entitling it to the highest credit Tho persons giving it express the cofident belief that a fraudulent issue amounting to $20,010,000 of State bonds has been negotiated and the money misapplied, and are convinced that if it should prove that the State is involved to that amount it will bo irrevocably insolvent Hnnlfcsto of Governor Kcatt. New Yore, November 5. To tee Public : Many false representations and statements have boon made and published agiinat the credit of theStateof South Carolina. It is true that $20,201,000 of bonds have been printed, which amount $9,000,000 have never been signed or issued, nor were they print ed with the intention to increase the State debt, bnt are in ponesaion of the State author ities. Also, $3,500,000 in sterling bonds have been printed bnt not irmed. $2,600,000 of registered stock aro now in tbe hands of the Treasurer of the State—being the balance of $5,010,000 issnrd. Tbe Legislature, from time to time, passed several acts for the issue of bonds to pay the indebtedness of the State. Subsequently, it parsed an act for the conver sion of its securities. To provide for this, the above amount in bonds was printed, which has given rise to many groundless misrepresenta tions and gross fabrications. [Signed.] R. K. Soott, Gov. S. G., Miles G. Wowere satisfied that onr peoplo had been great ly imposed upon with varions commercial articles. Bold them at high prices, and we were still better satisfied that our planters, by using ordinary care and diligence, could prepare for themselves s much better FBH.TI DI25 BH. at half the price paid by them for manures which too often proved almost worthless. Onr engges tions were acted upon by quite a number of fanners throughout the State. We furnished them with pure Chemicals, Dissolved Bones, etc., and now wo have very flattering reports from them—nearly all who tried onr formula. The HOME MADE has, in a vast majority of cases, done much better than the most popular standard Fertilizers heretofore used. We glial], this season, keep on hand a large stock of Chemicals, Bones, etc., tor manufacturing the HOME MADE FERTILIZES; and will soil them at such prices that every FARM- EB and GABDENEIt can supply themselves with THE BEST FERTILIZER to be had, at a cast of from $25 to $30 Per Ton.
