Telegraph & Messenger. TUESDAY MOUSING. NOV. 7, 1871. Abstract or a Discourse delivered by Kev. J. J. Robinson, D. D., or En- fanla, Ala., in Macon, on SabbaOi Night, November S: A railroad train moving from the depot with iU notnerone can heavily laden, i* an apt illus tration of the power of steam. Bnt a greater exists. The storm cloud musters its forces in the far distant horizon, and gathering blackness and horror as it spreads over the empyreum, bursts with terrific violenoe upon the habita tions of man, the flashing lightning and re sounding thunder causing the stoutest heart to quake with fear. This is power, also; but a mightier can be named. The Son, the great oeotre of heat—Saturn, distant nine hundred miiliona of miles—the asteroids—Jupiter—Her- aebel, eighteen hundred millions of miles re- moved-Neptone, the circumference of whose orbit is eight hundred and fifty thousand mil lions of mile*—indeed, the entire planetarium of the heavens, is bound together and held in subjection by a single power, that of gravita tion ; but there is a greater than this. The Great I Am, who has existed through the end- lea cycles cf eternity, spake into being the earth, the sea, and all their inhabitants, ani mate and Inanimate: This was power. Power ■ufllelenl to create a universe j to form a star so remote a to be invisible to human vision; to regulate and control the wonderful machinery which operates and moves the whole. But there is yet a greater power than this. 'Tia found in tho familiar words of the text, “ For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ: for it Is the power of God unto miration to every one that beiieveth."—liomans I chap. lCv. The power above described involves things material only. Steam ia applied and regulated by machinery and skill. The air and tempest are earthly phenomena, subject to the control of Him who holds the winds in Bis fist So also of the world. God launched it into exis tence. Be spake and all was done. Stars, trees, flowers, mountain and valley, and man in Bis own image, sprang into life. But the power that regenerates tho heart is that of Jehovah. Take a block of wood, may be fashioned into any shape and offers no resistance to the chisel. It ia matter, inert matter. Let the guilty conscience, however, be aroused. Speak of Calvary and the Cross. Boreal to the spiritual ear the doom and de spair of the sinner, and you at onoo awaken an opposition, neither physical strength nor brute force can overoome. This power of tho will, God himself never compels to act contrary to iU own intuitions. The sweetest invitations of the lledeomer, the voioe of the bridegroom, the thunders of the pulpit, are alike powerless to move the adamantine heart of the unbeliever. Ye still not come unto me, says Christ. This is {he only fatalism which hurls the sinner into the gulf of despair. Ye still not come, when bidden to the feast. Ye still oleave to the vain delusiona and ephemeral pleasures of earth and cry out crucify him, crucify him. Bnt happily there is an agenoy that can con trol the human heart. If tbs tender lovo of fa ther, mother, wife or sister fail to soften the obdurate rebel, the power of the holy spirit can ourb bis defiant pride and bring the penitent to the mercy seat The sinner, struggling io bis frail hark upon a stormy sea, when tossed by the waves and cast away npon a rook bound abore, battered, bruised and half dead with fear, aa he climba the thorny, slippery bank, finds bis Saviour's arms invitingly extended to receive him. Bis power on the day of Pentecost, also, wss signally manifested in the conviction and conversion of multitudes of every tongue and nation. It must be observed that the gospel is not the power of God onto regeneration alone, but unto salvation and sanctification. It ones the soul from trouble in this world, from future punishment and from sin in the mansions of the blessed. If on a party of pleasure a passenger falls oveilmard ana bis body be recovered soon after, the danger ianot over—measures must be taken for hia resuscitation. 80 likewise, a child may be anatobed from tho flames so badly burned that death ensaes, unloss the proper remedies are applied. But the sinner ia tho recipient of a finished redemption. God does not lesvo hia work bait done. It is glorious and complete. In the last great day not a soul of the redeemed shall be missing from the coronal of Christ Unbelief ia tho only limitation to this power. Faith accepts Jesus of Nazareth—goes with him to Gethaemauo, and agonizes with him upon the cross. It is the Christian's only solace amid the trials and persecutions of this life, and will abide with him even in the dark valley of the shadow of death. Ob, the beloved gospel of glChrist is the power of salvation unto every one beiieveth. The above is but a meager outline of Dr. Bobinson'a sermon, which was a touehing and masterly production. Be was listened to with wrapt attention by his auditors. Ntaudlng Commit!com of Ilie Georgia Mate Senate. Judiciary—Reese.
