sheriff's sales last Monday in South Carolina,
we see that in BIsekville one tract of ICO seres

Another of St 3 acres for $10. House and lot in
Barnwell, lot containing two acres, for $1,000.
Ia Williamsburg the “Cololougb tract” sold for

letter received in Washington laat Thursday
from one of tbe Decocratio members elect in
Texas says that the Governor has refased to
grant oertifieateaof eleotion to three of the four
Democratic Congressmen eledted last month,
He has declared martial law in two counties of
tbo State, and ia on his way to Washington to
induce tbe Freaident to suspend the operations
of tbe writ of habeas corpus in other portionsof
Texas. There is considerable feeling over bis
oonrae and the Legislature will probably pass
resolutions appealing to the President not to
take any snob step. Tbe local declaration of
martial law baa already been oandemued by tbe
same source.

How Mabtul Law Woaxs.—The Charleston
Conner, of Friday, describes. In toe following
paragraph, the advent of martial law into Union
district or eonnty, agreeably to Grant’s supple
mentary proclamation. It resembles considera
bly the process nnder the Spanish Inquisition
the French Lettres de Catchet:
A gentleman who has just arrived in Colum
bia from Union, as we learn from to* Phoenix,
cf yesterday, describes the oondition of things
in that unfortunate oonnty as terrible. Indi
viduals are arrested right and left, and there
ta no redress. In several instanced citizens have
been imprisoned for mere than a week, and
were then ooolly informed tot “a mistake had
been made.” Another raid was made upon toe
town cf Union on Wednesday morning at an
early hoar. All tbe roads leading to the town
were picketed, and no ono allowed to leave or
enter. Several carriages, containing ladle*, (on
their way to tbe railroad depot, to visit the Fair
in Columbia,) were halted and tnrned back. At
the time tbe informant left, arrests were being
made by squads of soldiers, accompanied by
Deputy United Statea Marshals. These squads
were seonring the streets, having in their hands
“black lists.” A Up on the shoulder, and the
nnlncky wight U turned over to an armed guard.
