TUESDAY MOUSING. NOV. 14, 1S7J.
Nov ros Jack.—We bed • cold, al!-d»y rain,
yesterday, and the next nova will be that Jack
Frost ia on the rampage. Ho has been bolding
back, and when be does come, a ill doubtless
come with a elm. Charleaton, we obeerre,
beard tram him Sunday morning, and the Sa
vannah papers aay be waa there Saturday morn
ing. ao he can’t be very far off from this lati
tude.
Well, we will be main glad to see him, if for
no other reason than to put winter clothing and
cheerful Area fully in fashion. There are a few
late staying raorquitoee, too—jolly dogs, who
aing "We won’t go home till morning”—that
ought to be put to bed, and Jack is the boy to
do that. Goodbye, days not cold enough for
winter suits and honest Urea, and still not warm
enough to be exactly comfortable without them.
Farewell, nights that are too eool for open win
dows, and a loll and a smoke io an arm chair be
side them, and yet not nipping enough for a
closer drawing of chairs around a glowing grate,
and that serene satisfaction only to bo enjoyed
by listening to the bowling of the atorm outside
from the vantage ground of a well warmed,
well lighted, oosy snuggery of a room—with
the bairns all safely slowed away in their warm
beds, »tid the last new novel or magazine to
chase the glowing hours with the spell of thoir
enchantment. We are tired of summer and its
halting yea-nay successor. Winter, rosy,
hearty, robustious old chap that ho is, waits
without Weloome, old boy, and make yourself
at home.

—This gentleman whose wife is one of the most
thorough and aooompliahed teachers of music
in the city, at intervals of every two or three
weeks invites the parents of bis pupils, and
patrons generally, to attend at his residence
and witness the progress of their charges in
music, composition and declamation.
U is ao admirable idea, as the juveniles are
not only stimulated to greater diligence, but
acquire confidence in themselves, and,»t the
same time learn manners and good breeding by
this quasi introduction Into genteel soeiety.
We wars present at one of those entertain
ments, on Monday night, and were astonished
at the proficiency of some pupils of very tender
age, both on the piano forte and violin. Among
the performers was the little seven year old
prodigy who bore away the prize at the late
Btete Fair.
Mrs. Uuk possesoi the happiest faculty for
imparting lessons in mnaie, (usually such a bore
to the beginner,) and Mr. Link himself is a
conscientious and thorough teacher, who will
train boys carefully for College, and watch over
their doportment and morals with almost par
ental solicitude.

MzBYLaNn Eucrtoir.—Tho Radicals have
been claiming great gains in Maryland, but the
official returns show that they are very easily
satisfied. They have only one Senator out of
twenty-five and twelve Representatives out of
eigbty-two—all of which twelve and the Sena
tor, too, they got in the three counties of Freder
ick, Washington and Alleghany. Prince George,
Charles, Caroline and Anno Arundel counties
whioh they carried last year were redeemed this
by the Democrats. Tho Democratic majority in
the State on the Congressional vote last year
was 19,067—this year it is 16,000, showing a
falling off of only 4,000 votes. This is easily
aooounted for on tho score of over confidenoe
and, thereYore, indifferenoe on the pert of the
Demoorata and the moat superhuman exertions
by the Badioals, who were liberally furnished
with money from Washington, and worked
harder than they ever did before. The Radicals
will snatch "My Maryland” from the Democratic
oolumn about the time that Grant ceases to be
the Great American Present-Taker.
WxjkTBxa.—We bad some weather yesterday,
with a chance of mom to-day. A cold southeast
rain, very little removed from sleet, dropped all
day, with a persistency worthy of a better eaose.
The sky waa leaden above and the ground black
and mnddy below. As for business, there was
little which had not better been left undone. If
anybody earned a five dollar bill, city currency,
and in doing so contracted a spell of bilious
pneumonia, we are sorry for him. If there
oould be a common arrangement by which such
days as that should be "counted out”—business
stopped—the store shut up, and all sit around
the fire and have a social time at home, nothing
would be lost. ^

Companies that suspended, several are offering
compromises with policy holders, on terms not
regarded as satisfactory by the latter. The
Merchants, of New YojJt, offer 60 cents on the
dollar. The Connecticut, of Hartford, offer SO
oenta down, and 6 cents additional in ninety
days. The North American, of Hartford, offer
35 cents. The Manhattan, of New York, offer
86 to 40 oenta. The Astor, of New Yotk, com
promised with a policy holder at 60 oants, and
gave him a sight draft on New York, on which
payment was refused. The Security, of New
York, estimate that 60 oenta will be satisfactory
to themselves, but the policy holders are not
generally willing to aeeept.
CuaTTAXooaa BomtXD.— Half of Chattanooga
was burned up on Sunday morning. The town
had been fired in three places, but only one of
them waa effectual. A gang of petroleum in
ternationals, from Chicago and Memphis, landed
at Chattanooga on Saturday night, and it is sup.
posed they were ao disgusted with the appear,
anoe of the town that they determined to burn
it up. We hope the members of that patriotic
association will come no further South. There

A Revolntlon In the Provision Trade
The Cincinnati Prices Current, under the
heading of Provision Trade Revolution, gives
some interesting information concerning the
growth of a new industry—the ice curing
pork in summer—which it says is making ‘ great
breaches” in the old packing trade. According
to tbia trade journal, it may almost be said that
it is no longer neoeassry to salt and lay aside
meat in winter at all, any more than at any
other season; there being, however, a few weeks
in the heated term of summer when it is not
neoeassry nor desirable to handle or use snob
meat. Swine are fattened more conveniently
And more economically in fall weather, and
then transportation can be done twenty per
cent, cheaper. Fresh ioe cured meat ia brighter,
•waster, and sells higher for several of the
leading qualities, than the dry, highly salted
winter cured. Ice houses have been constructed
at many Western points where packing con
tinues constantly and safely all tho rummer.
The extra cost cf cold air from ice is being
rapidly reduced, and ia already coating leas than
the expense of holding meat over from winter
to incomer. This state of affairs has complete
ly upset the old business by which the wealth
of the pork packing business has been acquired.
And the article oonciudes with the remark that
"the last winter’s packing stock has lately been
selling at a lots of some forty per cent
Whether the indifferent sueoess which, accord
ing to this authority, has lately attended what
was once the greatest single interest in Cincin
nati ia wholly due to ice-packing may
questioned. The Cincinnati Enquirer contains
a copy of an agreement entered into by the
packers there, dated November 1st, in which
they formally covenant with each other "that
they will, in the purchase of gross hogs, daring
the packing season of 1871 and 1873, only weigh
as merobsntable hogs such as will walk without
assistance to the scales.” It is comforting
the general consumer to know that her packers
have "struck hands" over a bargain not to salt
away any more " broken-down or diseased'

EfTect or Radical Rule In South Caro
lina—The State Bankrupt.
Every Sontbern State has suffered more
leas from Radical plunderers. State officials,
who, protected by Federal bayonets, have used
their commissions as licenses to steal. Louis
ians, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, North
Carolina and Georgia, have been robbed
many millions of dollars, but it has been re
served to poor mongrelized, down-trodden
South Carolina to bo utterly and entirely plun
dered of her lost dollar. A apodal dispatch to
the Charleston News dated Columbia, 9th in
stant, says: "The financial situation is un
changed, bat any change most bo for the better.
The State is perfectly bankrupt, and a draft of
one dollar on the State Treasury to-day was dis
honored. Judges, school teachers and other
State appointees are clamoring for payment,
and selling their warrants at ten and fifteen per
oent. discount.
"The worst feature of the situation is the
absenoe of fioandal officers of the State, and
the atudions suppression of facts by those who
remain.
‘The largest tax-payers and tho leading bank
ers of this oily aro wholly ignorant of the oon
ditiou of the State finances, and the securities
of the State are offered at ridiculously low
figures, with no takers. The interest on tho
State bonds, due October 1st, has not yet been
paid, and the bankers of this city, at their meet
ing to-day, agreed to have no farther dealings
in State securities. It is stated on the highest
authority that the namo of Henry Clews, of New
York, appears on Kimpton’s bond only as a wit
ness and not as a bondsman.”
IVcalcrn autl Foreign Provision
Crops.
Western intelligence represents the corn crop
as the best harvested for years. In parts of In
diana, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska and Minnesota
corn is said to be offered at the cnbs at from
ten to fifteen oenta. The yield in Kentucky and II-
linois iato be stated larger than ever before. The
Knoxville, East Tennessee, grain market is very
dall and little or nothing doing. New corn, in
the ear, la worth fifty to fifty-five ceuts. Sacked
oats fifty to fifty-two and a half. All this is
consoling to the many Georgians who will have
corn to bny.
The grain crops in Europe, on the contrary,
have been generally light. In England the
falling off has been variously estimated at from
fifteen to twenty per cent, while in Hungary,
the Danubian Principalities, portions of Austria
and in Southern Russia—all countries that have
usually exported large quantities of grain—there
has been a great decrease from the average pro
duction. The ravages of the potato rot and
the cattle disease in Groat Britain will increase
the demand for grata and animal food, and the
United States will be able to supply both in any
quantity at reasonable prices, as cheap bacon
and pork, articles extensively consumed every
where, are tbe natural constquenoc of cheap
oorn.
War ('losds In Fnropc.
All the quid nnnes agree that Europe is on
the eve of another general grand massaere; but
nobody knows precisely what it is all about,
except it may be to prove which is Ihe “big dog
of the tan-yard” or "oockof tbe dunghill." Sun
day’s telegrams say that the speech of Mr.
Gladstone at the Lord Mayor's banquet in Lon
don la thought by France to possess great signif.
oauoe,in viewof approaching complies lions. Itis
looked upon as a declaration of persistent ad
herence to a policy of peace and neutrality in
continental affairs. So soon as it was read,
France gives out that her only policy is an *111-
anoe with Russia.
The Berlin correspondent of the Herald writes
that tbe visit of the Grand Duke Alexia to the
United States is part of a political movement to
ooneiliate the friendship of tbe United States to
Russia in view of the approaching grand flare
up. The writer says:
Yonr correspondent, enjoying many facilities
be well informed, is of opinion that before
long tbe world will witness one of the most ter-
nble wars that ever desolated the countries of
Europe. Tho eruption will be forced or held
back subject to the decision of tbe military au
thorities at Berlin. In ease they decide adversely
to a change in tho armament, then the year
1872 will leave its bloody mark in the annals of
history.

Of last week show total receipts since 1st Sep
tember 565,195, against 678,566 bales for the

113,361 bales so far. Probably it will be two

crop, which we still think will be very large—
probably a million to a million and a half. The

The Gubernatorial Election. |
If anything needed to bo said in support of
the power of the General Assembly to provide
by law for filling by election, the Gubernatorial
vacancy now existing in Georgia, it could not
be said more conclusively than is done in the
letter of Hon. Linton Stephens, which will be
found in this edition of tbe Tzuosafh. This
seems to ns the most meagre and groundless
pretense of a constitutional question, which has
ever been raised in the oonrse of political his
tory, but if it can be called a question, JaJge
L. has disposed of it.
Csithsil Amsestt.—Bro. Greeley feels so

they will agree to decree it. He says:
We prav that two bites be not made of tbe

now ineligible to office, or of none. For partial
enfranchisement will only intensify the demand
for a measure of amnesty which leaves no pre
