A FEARFUL FALL
Narrow Escape or n Railroad Conductor
from Dcntb.
Panl Kelley, conductor of a freight train on
tha KaahTitle and Northwestern Bailroad, met
with a very aeriona accident on that road when
within about fifty miles of NaahTille, Wednes
day night The train had been (topped to wood,
leering the rear portion of it on a trestle, thirty
feet in height. It waa dark, and Kelley stepped
off the cabooee with the intention of going for
ward, but instead fell downward. Heaaya that
the distance seemed so great that he thought he
would nerer reach terra jtraso again, bat
waa In doe time eery ns pleasantly reminded
of the fact that he was not to wntinu* through
spaoo always, by a sodden collision with the
ground, which knocked the breath oat of him.
(Strange as it may appear, be reached the groond
—cat-like—feet foremost. When he had pidted
himself op he diacorand that one of hie Jaw-
teeth bad been knocked oot, though hia cheeks
seemed to be nninjnred, and that the nail on
one of hia lose bad been jerked off, notwith
standing the fact that hia boot was nninjnred.
lie waa also slightly scratched npon bis temple.
Though coffering somewhat yesterday with
pains in his breast and a stiffened neck, be will
soon be himself again. Bis escape waa almost
mlraenloos.
The Presidential Fusion Programme
The following Washington dispatch appears in
tbe Western papers of Saturday:
The Patriot, tha organ of the Democratic Con
gressional Committee, this morning, has an
opening editorial in favor of the proposition
that tha Democracy (hall unite in the snpport
of a oooeenratiTC Republican ticket, and prom
ises farther attention to the matter. This course
is understood to have been taken after fall de
liberation with many leading Democrats. Tbe
patriot indicates that it will rapport a movement
to secure the oo. operation of snob Republicans
as Senator Sumner, and says, “the Senator from
Uaaaachoaetts would bring with him a force
which would eommand gratitude.''
The concentration of the negro vote is tbe
great weapon on wbioh the centralists and their
candidate rely, and Mr. Sumner, and perhaps
one other eminent man, to whose name in this
oonneetioo, till hie own views are more definite
ly expressed, we hesitate even distantly to re-
far, are they who, of all others, oen wrench
that weapon from their hand, nor could be bet
ter supplement hia lifeof devotion to this eman
cipated race than by reaouing them from tbe
new tbrslldom in which they are plunged, the
frnit of a fear within and a falsehood without
Tbe froedmen would have no fear from any
movement in which men like Mr. Sumner co
operated. and, instcid of being moved in mis-
aee, as they are now, would find themselves as
independent as white men—free to sot and
think for themselves.
A Vanaasnta Avarcaw.—Uncle Aaron Mitchell,
now 103 years old, was in onr office a few days
sinoe. lie ia a contemporary of Uncle
who died in our vicinity a short time e
they having lieen kidnapped and brought from
Africa together. Aaron gives rather a lucid
description of hia feelings when he was on
board of a slaver and bonnd for America. His
opinion waa that they were being brought to
this oountry as food—that the Americans were
cannibals of the wont type. They did nothing
lint “cry and bawl” the whole flip. On ar
riving at Charleston be was acid to Robert
Brown, who brought him into this State, where
be remained ever since. Although his ex
treme age would create the impression that
Aaron's days were well-nigh rnn, the faithful
old man looks spry and lively, and has tbis
year enltlvated a crop of corn, doing tbe plow
ing and hoeing himself. Hia eyesight ia extra
ordinary for one of hia age—he having thread
ed a needle in onr presence by means of the
naked eye. —McMfnnciUe, Tenn., JVsie Bra.
Taorni.x Baxwntn Betweeh tbe United
States snd Brain.—The Uovernment has taken
note of the eondnet of the Spanish Govern'
meat sending two or tbreo vessels of war from
Havana to l’ort-an Prices to foil the menace
made toward the Hornet a month or two ainoe.
It is possible that tbis wsr fleet ia intended for
some other point, but tbe threat of the Spanish
authorities, constantly reiterated, furnishes
ground for grave apprehensions. Tbe Teesel
ia still tho subject of diplomatic correspon
dence, but U ia sufficient that she is in a neu
tral port to render tbe attempt to tako her by
force an outrage on this Government, as well
as that of Hayti, to say nothing of tho violation
of the plainest principles of international law.
None is clearer than that no foreign war vessel
haa a right to make a captors in a neutral port.
This Government haa not ancha foroe just now
at Port-au-Prince as it desires.
MANHOOD
YOUNG AhD RISING GENERATOR
Tbe vegetative powers of life are strong, but in
a few years bow often the pallid hue, tha lack
luster eye, and emaciated form, and the Impossibil
ity of application to mental effort, show their
baneful influence. It soon becomes evident to the
observer that seme depreaeing icflnence ia checking
the development of the body. Conramption ia
talked of, and perbipa tha yontb ia removed from
school and tent into the country. This la cno or
tbs wont movements. Removed from ordinary di
versions of the ever-changing scenes of the city,
the powan of tha body, too much enfeebled to give
zeet to healthful and rural exercise, thoughts are
turned inwardly upon themselves.
If tbe patient be a femile the approach of the
menace ia looked for with anxiety aa tha first
symptom in which nature is to show her earing
power In diffusing the circulation and visiting She
cheek with the bloom of health. Alasincrease of
appetite haa grown by what it fed on. The energies
of the system are prostrated, and the whole econo
my it deranged. The beautiful and wonderful
period in which body and mind undergo eo fascinat
ing a change from child to woman la looked for in
vain. The parent's heart bleeds in anxiety, and
tbegrave but waiting for ita victim.
KnwTAJtn u, Focn as a Means or Gases —
Beecher naid iu his sermon last Sunday: “A
man can't eat dyspeptic and live grace. Over
eating makes too muoh blood and keeps the
body feverish and tending downward. Many
men make a practice of eating themselves into
Htupidity every day. Can a man cultivate the
fruits of the spirit when he gormandises every
day till he can scarcely see I How can these
fruits of peace and joy exist with a gluttonous
stuffing! Every day the clarity of mind is
obscured by over-eating. Every man ought to
be put into exact knowledge of what hia system
needs. I find many persona who snffor by un
der nutrition. They are white and long, and
lean and oold. They need more animal. They
are too heavy for the beast they ride. More
food would be a means of graoe."
