We saw frost in the shade yesterday morning at 8} o’clock. Lingard, the celebrated comedian, will per form in Ralston Hsll to-night. He is said to be one of the best in America. The shooting affray of Tuesday night last was settled yesterday morning, so far as the eity is concerned, by each of the parties paying a fine of twenty-five dollars. The Brilliant cooking stove ia claimed to pos es many advantages over all others. It is ■aid to oook better bread in less lime and with n smaller quantity of fuel than any other before the pnblio. B. A. Wise A Co. are sole agents for Mscon. The boxes in the new Foat-office are now be ing rented. We bear of a man who carried seventeen ‘possnms’’ to Gnthbert, a few days ago. He ■aid he caught them all in one night, and it was a mighty bad night for “possum banting” at that. Christian A Bawteti went for him, bat be eonldn't be induced to take pay for one in puffs, and they crept back to their holescrying: “O—pos sum.” Cabetiso Concealed Weapons —For a few days past shooting has become very common in Macon. Not a night passes that we do not hear several pistol shots. This habit of carrying eon- ocaled weapons is one of the worst and most inexcusable that can be contracted. There may be limes when a man is justifiable in carrying weapons for defense, bat when such emergen cies arise (he pnblio will approve the plan of carrying them in an open and not a concealed manner. Onr experience has been that only those who carry deadly weapons ever have oc casion to nee them. Tbe fact of a man’s having concealed about his person a pistol is evidence that he is anticipating a difficulty. And men who attend to their own business, letting otbens alone, rarely, if ever, expeet an altercation. There are old men in Macon who have had to deal with the pnblio all their lives, and yet have never carried any deadly weapon abont their persons. They will tell yon that there have been times, perhaps, when they would have Ufed them, had they been convenient, bnt after calm and matnrA deliberation they were glad, indeed, that they had none. Snob, at least, hss been onr experience. If n man will attend strictly to his own business there is but little danger of his being attacked in such a way as to render dangerous methods of defense neces sary. The law has made ample provisions to meet the eases of all who are imposed upon, and armed with the law ia certainly more hon orable than armed with pistols andbowie knives. This miserable habit has become very general and onr grand juries shonld look into it care fully. So important is this subject tbst it is made tho duty of the Superior Court jndges to call the attention of grand jurors to it specially. We know nothing of tbe proceedings of this grand jury, bnt it does seem to ns that so mneb of this thing has been prsotised recently, and in such a way as to render deteetion easy, they onght to find several true bills for this one of fense. We do not accuse any particular mem ber of this body of carrying oonoealed weapons, bnt the praetioe has become so common now-a- days that it is difficult to find twenty-fonr men taken indiscriminately from tho people, some of whom are not or have not been guilty of the offense. And itia a difficult matter to get a man to present another for a violation of law when he is guilty of precisely the same thing. We heartily wish that some means conld be devised by which the babit conld be done away with altogether. Matos's Coubt —Basinesj was business with tbe conrt yes erdsy morning. His Honor was in a hurry. F. C. Bird first moved to tbe front to answer u charge of undertaking to stand on bis head and feet both at the same time without keeping hi* month shut He took up too much ground by bis gymnastic exer cises, and was too anxious to be noticed, judg ing from the noise he was making. An at tempt at explanation failed. “Keno!” cried Hia Honor; down came a V, and the Bird flew away. Joe Plant doesn’t take oity money him self, bnt if be finds any greenbacks lying around loose, they are sure to be invested in whisky for his own use, no matter who may claim the greenback. Joe thongbt it best to begin in time to prepare for Christmas, and to this end laid violent hands npon fifteen dol lars which belonged to another darkey. Joo became suddenly penitent and refunded the fifteen, together with an X to his Honor to say nothing abont it, Angns McKinnon won't see his little brother imposed npon by any son of a nigger. Mattie Wil liams, Mary Harris, and Emma Harris took sjme pepper tea to counteract the effects of the oold weather. They got to feeling ga-lorions after swallowing the track, and made too much fuss to suit a policeman near by. Polioe com plained abont it, and the court lent a listening ear. They will chew city hash for ten days and take five dollars worth each of ttock in the current expenses of the city. John Flemming didn't come into court. He was down below trying to convert himself into a Umber jack, and for such silly behaviour he can pay five dollars into the treasury when he wakes up. Henry Glowers is a lightish He fights much. He-hit a woman. Tbe woman eonldn’t appre ciate the joke, bnt Henry thought it was mighty funny. His Honor thought so too, and eonldn’t see why a man shouldn't pay for fun when he enjoyed it so much. Henry had, in tbe opin ion of the oourt, enjoyed ten dollar*’ worth, and drew a sight draft to that amount. Henry came to time, and the court collapsed. Tbe New Teleobats Compant.—The new tel egraph company are pnshing along and soon we will have plenty of home made lightning at work in Macon. Well, we confess that this tel egraphing business is a mystery to ns; bnt then there are some other things that are mysterious too. It is a mystery how W. F. Carlos can know exactly what everybody is going to want to eat, and always have it on hand whenever it ia called for. It is a mystery, too, bow he can afford to Bell so cheap. We guess be knows bow it is binuelf, bnt yon’ll be astonished if yon call on him. Fast Time.—It is said that tho farther South yon go the slower the trains ran on the rail roads. The American House, Boston, is so favorably known that it seems a work of supererogation to call attention to its many great improve ments. Yet, as it bases no claim on its past superiority, it is only justice to make known tbe steady effort manifested by its proprietors to render it tbe leading hotel of New England. Brilliant.—Pnblio attention has been called by the action of the State Fair oommittee to the extraordinary merits of the Brilliant cooking stove, to which toe first premium and gold medal were awarded recently. It bums less fnel by fifty per cent, and bakes better bread than any other stove now in nse : and it was for those qualities, chiefly, that the committee gave it toe preference.—iVrie Orleant Crescent, January 26th, 1868. FELDEB r Admr ra RECOMMENDED BY LEADING PHYSICIANS, AND HAS BTOOD THE TEST OF ANALYSIS —EV— COMPETENT CHEMISTS. READ. READ. READ. Prof. BILLIHAN, State Chemist of Conn., says: I have carefully examined the sample of “ Cen tury White Wheat Whisky.” In color, taste and odor this liqnor is without fault. It is entirely ftee from any deleterious substance whatever; the ab sence of all trace of lead, and of other poisonous or hurtful things in it is absolute. By distillation, I find its alcoholic strength to be exactly that of proof spirits by the present United States Law, viz: 60 parts by volume (measure) of absolute al cohol, 83.71 parts of water; by weight this corre sponds to alcohol 42% per cent., and water 67% percent. The ash is chiefly alkaline carbonate, and is far less in quantity than is found in the av erage of good dtinking water. No alcoholic liqnor can bo purer than the sample of your “Century." [Signed] B. SILL1MAN, State Chemist. Prof. O. U. SHEPARD, Jr., State Chemist of South Carolina, Bays. I have carefully investigated theeampleof “Cen tury” Whisky sent by you for inspection, and pro nounce it to be free from adulteration, and as such I can recommend its use to the public. I have ex amined it for copper, lead, toe alkaloids, and other poisonous eubBtances, but am happy to Bay I have found none of them. The inspected Whisky con tains 61 per cent, by volume, or 43.50 per cent, by weight, of alcohol; 0.06 per cent, of ash. To the taste it is mi. d, mellow and high flavored. [Signed] O. U. SHEPARD, Jit., M. D. Prof. JOHN DABBY, Editor of the American Gro cer, New York, says: Wo have received a sample of the “Century Whisky” for analyeia. We have condnctod the analysis with great care; there is no trace of metal in it, and nothing that should not come from the fermentation and distillation of the finest grains. The bonquet ia natural, depending npon a minute quantity of volatile oil or ether. We have analyzed many Whiskies, and have never before met with one aa strong ns this; they are generally several de grees below the government standard, this ia slightly above. We are not a connoisera in liquors, bnt if pnrity and strength are desirable qualities the ‘.’Century Whiskies” most stand pre-eminent. Dr. J. M. CABNOCHAN, Health Officer of the Port of New York, Bays: I have tried the “Century” Whiskies and find them to be of very superior quality. I am happy to recommend them, as I believe them to be entirely free from deleterious or hurtful properties. The analysis of Frof. Silliman is sufficient proof of their great parity, and I believe that they will become very popular Whiskies wherever they are once used. [Signed] J. M. CABNOCHAN, M. D., finrgooD-in-Chief to State Emigrant Hospital, Health OfficerPort of New York, eto. Prof. TILDEN, of Washington, D. C., says: I have analyzed the specimens of the “Century” Whisky Bent to mo with request to that effect. I find no Fusel Oil and no trace of any deleterious mineral or metallic substance. The liquor presents no feature which does not belong to the best Whiskies, while it offers some nnnsual points of excellence. Its color ie dark, owing to toe presence of Caramel, which undoubtedly improves its tone; the taste is smooth and toe bead good. Tbe re markable strength of this Whisky, coupled with the unmistakable marks of age which are to be per ceived, its freedom from harmful principles too of ten found in such liquors, and its natural_ bouquet justify mein prononnciDg it both for medicinal and domestic purposes a superior article. [S gued] W. C. TILDEN, Prof. Chemistry, Medical Dep’t, Georgetown College.
