XVlint Commodore Vnnderbllt I* Doing With til« Million*—'The Heir* Apparent to ■>Holden Throne-ThePerpeluallon of the Vanderbilt Dymuly-The Men who Hnnngr tiie t:*»Ule»s Macaulay'e Latter to the Rochester Chronicle | The last time I paw Commodore Vanderbilt bis form, though erect, wee feeble, end hie coun tenance looked old, sod bis once flashing eyes bed exchanged their fire for a kindly end mnch more winning expression. It may readily be understood that the old man is now leaving the greater part of hie business in the hands of bis children, who are in overy sense oompetent to iteoare; and Ibia leads ns to look at a rich man’s family. . The Commodore bad three sons, ono of whom died a few years sgo. He wav engaged to a yonng lady to whom his father presented a very fine house at Washington Heights. Another son, Cornelius, Jr., is a talented man, but in early life be fell a victim to bad habits. Hid it not been for intemperance he would have made a superior business man. He baa pur sued a reckless course and incurred heavy obli gations, under which he became bankrupt. Men have treated him in a lavish manner, ex- peeling that bis rich father would enable him to pay his debts | bnt the Commodore was deter, mined to let him shift for bimaelr, and the con. sequence was that Cornelius went throngb bank- rnnlev. Among other items of debt was one of $11,000 to noucx ninLXT, who gets stuck by almost every poor devil wbo choose* to vic timise him. Since his failare, Cornelias has determined, it ia said, to torn over a new leaf; bnt inch determinations generally end as they begin, in mere breath. It is probable that on this aoeonnt the Commodore will place whatever be may leave this misguided son in the bands of suitable trustees, and thus it will be preserved front dissipation and extravagance. William Henry is the oldest and the favorite of the Commodore's sons. He is a stout and well-proportioned man of fifty, though he looks much younger, with a foil countenance and one abundant with good humor. He in a thorough business rosn, and yet appears to enjoy life. He has, however, been severely, afflicted with a peculiar disease, which brought him last year nnder surgeon's bands, and a core was at last pronounced niter a painfnl operation. William ia the chief manager of his fsthsr's railway in terests, and in addition, baa the IMMXXSX UNDID E8TATX8 ON STATIN ISLAND, which the Commodore Conveyed to him a few S ears sgo. One of these is Clifton Park, which i let ont as a hotel, with pleasure grounds cov- . ering fifty seres. Near by, William has a conn- try residence, with a beautiful front on the sea, but ba spends only a part of bis time here. Staten Island ta too qniet for such a man, even for a rural life, and beuoe the watering piaoes are preferred. Besides this the island labors nnder a peculiar misfortune, wbieb cannot be measured except by experionee. This is its clouds of mosquitoes, which sre bred in the salt meadows nesr by. I have known an entire dinner patty broken up by a sudden invasion of these tormentors, which really made a dinner party of the guests themselves. Hence the Vanderbilts seldom come to Staten Island; bat one of these days each of them will make a final journey to the spot designated for tbelr final rest. SONS-IN-LAW. The Commodore had a large family, in which the female sex has predominance. His daugh ters were, as might have been expected, sought early, and they married gentlemen of ability, in whom the father found efficient allies. It is seldom that any man of distinction surrounds himself with such a circle of talent as now obeys tho oommands of the great master of railway destiny. Hero is Dsniel Torrance, formerly of Montreal t born of sn influential and opulent family, and a first-class business man. Re now fills the office of President of a railroad in which the Commodore has a heavy interest, and al- thoagh a millionaire, be devotee himself closely to business. Here, too, ia Horace F. Clark, a Yankee lawyer of fine personal appearance and easy address, and one of tha moat penetrating and adroit members of the bar. He haa served for yean in the management of tbb Hudson River reed, and ia also a director in the Lake Shore road, besides wielding a heavy interest in the Western Union Telegraph stock. Mr. Clark came to this oily poor, and so did bis brother Frederick. Tho latter was a preacher, and re mained poor; bnt Uonoe married Miss Van derbilt and became a lieutenant of the Commo dore. He haa made a million of dollars, and with bis property may be considered well to do in the world. With such a body of faithfnl and accomplished assistants, one cannot be sur prised even at the enormous success of the great railroad king, and it ia evident that any mon archy which could be wielded with such power and effloienoy would attain rapid and astonish ing magnitude. TLANS roK TBK FUTUUK. Tltose who dtacum these matters with such confidence as to imply information, gay that the • Commodore haa to planned matters that his death will make no revolution in tho course of the empire. The great bulk of the kingdom will be given to William, who is already more than a millionaire. The royal line will, it ia ex- peoted, be perpetuated in this branch. William will, if he survive bis father, be made President (f the Central and Hudaon River Railroad, and will no doubt come Into possession of $40,000,- 000 in stock. Ho has a promising son, Corne lius. who now serves aa treasurer of tho Harlem road, and this yonng msn will then take his father's plaoe as crown prinoe. Tho Commodore ia not only a working man, but haa bred his children, as far aa possible, in the same man- ner, for be knows that without business talent and application, their .wealth will soon pass away. Hence ho was much delighted at his grandson's attention to his rontioe of duty tn the Harlem offioe, and one New Tear’s day ho said to him, '‘Cornelias, you have "••on good boy, and hare's a little present for yon. As he said this be handed him a check . y 5 *?’®®®* He has another grandson, brother of the last, named William. A stranger enter- mg the President’s office of the Hudson River H°ad would hardly imagine that the plain looking and hard-working clerk who writes dili- gwotly at the table, and soaroely has time to . en ® of * h ® beirsof the financial ret- Pf™-, This yonng man, however, ia William «anderbtlt, jr., who thus ia learning the ele- menta of that rrginu which ho is expected in dne tune to administer. Like the members of the Prussian monarchy who are bred to fighting, the Commodore's family are taught the practi- cal branches of their empire. As for the sons- in-lsw, they will probably receive a handsome memorial say from $1,000,000 to $5,000,000 •pieoe, but William will be the main represen tative of the great house. Public Meeting ot the Citizens of Wil kinson County. ^’ursuant to previous notice, the citizens of ’’ ilkinaon county assembled in the Conrt-honse 0n ,.t instant, and after organizing by W. A. The vegetative powers of life are strong, but in a few yean bow often the pallid hue, the lack luster eye, and emaciated form, and the impossibil ity of application to mental effort, show their baneful influence. It Boon becomes evident to the observer that some depressing influence is checking the development ot the body. Consnmption is talked of, and perhaps the youth ia removed from school and sent into the oountry. This is one of the wont movements. Removed from ordinary di- Tenions of the ever-changing scenes of the oty, the powers of the body, too much enfeebled to give zest to healthful and rural exercise, thoughts are turned inwardly upon themaelTee. If the patient be a fentile the approach of the menses Is looked for with anxiety as the fint symptom in which nature ia to show her saving power in diffusing the circulation and visiting the cheek with the bloom of health. Alaa! increase of appetite has grown by what it fed on. The energies of the system are prostrated, and the whole econo my is deranged. The beautiful and wonderful period in which body and mind undergo eo feadnat- ing a change from child to woman ia looked for in vain. The parent's heart bleeds in anxiety, and fancies the grave but waiting for its victim. HELMBOLD’S Extract Buchn, FOR WEAKNESS ARISING FROM EXCESSES OR EARLY INDISCRETION, attended with the following symptoms: INDI3 POSITION TO EXERTION, LOSS OF POWEB, LOSS OF MEMORY, DIFFICULTY OF BREATH ING, GENERAL WEAKNESS, Honor of Disease, Weak Nerves, Trembling, Dreadful horror of Death, Night Sweats, Cold Foot, Wtkefolnesa, Dimness of Vision, Lsngor, Universal Lusitude of the Muscu lar System, often Enormous Appetite with Dyspep tic Symptoms, Hot Ilands, Flushing of the Body, Dryness of the Skin, Pallid Countenance and ERUPTIONS ON THE FACE, PAIN IN THE RACK, Heaviness of the Eyelids, Frequently Black Spots Flying before the Eyee, with Temporary Suffusion and Lou of Sight, Want of Attention, Great Mobility, RESTLESSNESS, with Horror ot Society. Nothing is more desirable to each pa tients than Solitude, and nothing they more dread, for fear of themselves; no repose of manner, do earnestness, no speculation; but a hurried transition from one question to another. THESE SYMPTOMS, IF ALLOWED TO GO OX-WHICH THIS MEDICINE INVARIABLY REMOVES—800N FOLLOW LOSS OF POWER, FATUITY, AND EPILEPTIC FITS, IN ONE OF WHICH THE PATIENT MAY EXPIRE. During the Superintendence of Dr. WILSON at the BLOOMJNGDALE ASYLUM, this sad result ooccutred to two patients. Reason had for a time left them, and both died of epilepsy. They were of both eexee, and abont twenty years of ago. Who can say that these excesses are not fre quently followed by thoeo direful diseases, IN SANITY and CONSUMPTION ? Tho records of tho INSANE ASYLUMS, and the melanchoUy deaths by Consnmption, bear ample witneea to the truth of thoeo assertions. In Lunatic Asylums the most melancboliy exhibition appears. The countenance is actually sodden and quito destitute; neither mirth, nor grief ever visits it. Should a sound of the votes occur it is rarely articulate. “ With woful measures wan dispair Low sullen eonnds their grief beguiled.” While we regret the existence of the above disease and symptoms, we are prepared to offer an invaluable gift of chemistry for the removal of the consequences.
