Killing or Baxsaxo.—The case of Mr. Lary for the killing of Birdiong on Saturday last was before tbe Grand Jury yesterday morning, and without finding any biU they honorably ac quitted Mr. L. Tbe circumstances were of n very aggravated nature, and only an absolute necessity, as a matter of self-defense, caused Mr. L. to commit the deed. Mr. Birdsong en tered the house where Mr. L. was sitting, and taking doom a gun that was in tbe room, com meneed beating him over the head. Having knocked him down, he took from Mr. L. a pistol and fired at him. Mr. L. recovering from the blows, drew another pistol and commenced firing at Birdsong, theseoond shot taking effect which proved fatal in a few minutes. These are the circumstances as related to ns. We have heard no blame attached to Mr. L-try at all, but on the contrary, all whom we have heard express them selves justify him throughout. Hebbixo’s Saxes in the Late Fntz.—In sub. mitting the following evidences of tbe Fire Pro tecting quality of the Herring's Patent Safes, we do not wish the pablio to understand that there is no limit to their endurance, nor that every Herring Safe was triumphant in the re cent fire. Some were exposed to blasts of heat that melted and burnt np the very iron as if in a puddling furnace; some were crushed by the falling oralis and iron girders; some were opened imprudently while hot, or allowed to remain among the rains, amid the heated bricks glow ing like a furnace, or baking like an oven; bnt what we do refer to, is the great number that have preserved their contents, and saved the property of their owners. Unlike all great fires that have preceded it, when the fiery blast swept by, there was no water to cool the heated rains. Tbe oralis hav ing mostly fallen before the material within was consumed, the safes were enclosed in these burning ovens until they cooled themselves, before they oould be rescued. In the seven hundred accidental fires pre vious to this, in whieh the "Herring’s Safes” have come out of the contest triumphantly, and in the thirty years of their manufacture, we think no reoord of theirs is brighter than the success of no many of their number, in the ‘Burning of Chicago.” Over one hundred and twenty testimonials received to this dste.— Chicago Tribune, Hoc. 4, 1871. Prof. 8ILLIMAN, State Chemist of Conn., saya I have carefully examined the sample of “ Cen tury White Wheat Whisky.” In color, taste and odor this liquor is without fault. It is entirely free from any deleterious substance whatever; the ab sence of all trace of lead, and of other poisonous or hurtful things in it is absolute. By distillation, I find its alcoholic strength to be exactly that of proof spirits by the present United States Law, viz: 50 parts by volume (measure) of absolute al cohol, 83.71 parts of water; by weight thiB corre sponds to alcohol 42>£ per cent, and water 57>£ percent The ash is chiefly alkaline carbonate, and ia far less in quantity than is foued in the av erage of good drinking water. No alcoholic liquor can be purer than the sample of your “Century.” [Signed] B. SILL1MAN, Slate Chemist. Prof. O. U. SHEPARD, Jr., State Chemist of South Carolina, says. I havo carefully investigated the sample of “Cen tury” Whisky sent by you for inspection, and pro nounce it to be free from adulteration, and as such I can recommend its use to the public. I have ex- amined it for copper, lead, the alkaloids, and other poisonous substances, but am happy to eay I have round none of them. The inspected Whisky con tain® 51 per cent, by volume, or 43.50 per cent, by weight, of alcohol; 0.06 per cent, of aah. To the taste it is mid, mellow and high flavored. [Signed] C. U. SHEPARD, Js., M. D. Prof. JOHN DARBY, Editor of the American Gro cer, New York, sajB: We have recaived a sample of the “Century Whisky” for analysis. We havo conducted the analysis with great care; there is no trace of metal in it, and nothing that should not come from the fermentation and distillation of the finest grains. The bouquet is natural, depending upon a minute quantity of volatile oil or ether. We have analyzed many Whiskies, and have never before met with one as strong na this; they are generally several de grees below the government standard, thi3 is slightly above. We are not a ccnnoiseur in liquors, but if purity and strength are desirable qualities tho ‘ Century Whiskies” must stand pre-eminent. Dr. J. M. CABNOCHAN, Health Officer of the Port of New York, says: I have tried the “Century” Whiskies and find them to bo of very superior quality. I am happy to recommend them, a a I believe them to be entirely free from deleterious or hurtful properties. The analysis of Prof. Silliman ia sufficient proof of tbeir great purity, and I believe that they will become very popular Whiskies wherever they are once used. [Signed] J. M. CARNOCHAN, M. D., Surgeon-in-Chief to State Emigrant Hospital, Health OfficerPort of New York, etc. Prof. TILDEN, of Washington, D. O., says: I havo analyzed tho specimens of the “Century” Whisky sent to me with request to that effect. I find no Fusel Oil and no trace or any deleterious mineral or metallic substance. The liquor presents no feature which does not belong to the best Whiskies, while it offers some unusual points of excellence. Its color is dark, owing to the presence of Caramel, which undoubtedly improves its tone; tho taste is smooth and the bead good. The re markable strength of this Whisky, coupled with the unmistakable marks of age which are to be per ceived, its freedom from harmful principles too of ten found in such liquors, and its natural bouquet, justify mein pronouncing it both for medicinal and domestic purposes a superior article. [S gaed] W. C. TILDEN, Prof. Chemistry, Medical Dep’t, Georgetown College. The foregoing are samples selected at random from several hundred testimonials in regard to the purity and strongth of the “CENTURY* Whiskies. A Trial is Respectfully Solicited.
