A MAGNIFICENT SCHEME.
The Atlantic A: Great Western Canal.
If one were to went that at no distant data
Macon would be on the grand aranna of Weet-
era transportation to the Atlantic Ocean—that
in the con rue of a rerj few ream hundreds of
millions of Western grain would be moring
down our Ocmnlgee River, to And its ocean de
pots for transhipment at Brunswick and Savan
nah, be would certainly raiae • smile of incred-
ulity snd gsiu the ohsrecter of a hair-brained
enthusiast and dreamer. But, nevertheless, we
say no man can read the report of Colonel Fro-
bel, the Superintendent of Fnblie Works, with
out coming to the conclusion that this event ia
not only jwasiMr, but even morally sure of real
isation at no distant day.
Were we not pressed for apace, we should like
to reprint this report in full. But if reprinted,
probably the length of the document would dis-
courage the mass of readers, while all particu
larly interested in so grand a scheme will get
the original report and conn it over with atten
tion and thought.
Wbst, then, la this projoct which we do not
hesitate to predict will in a very short time be
come a grand and leading scheme of internal
improvoment, nniUng the great States of the Mis
sissippi Valley and the Northwest and nearly al
the ootton Statee in harmonione co-operation to
a singlo end, as it has already done tho views
and opinions of the most distinguished civil and
military engineers of the country? Take the
map and observe that the Miaainippi, Ohio and
Tennessee Rivera, (now that the latter has been
deepened at Muscle Shoals) present an almost
direct lino of inland steamboat and barge navi
gation from SL Louis to Gnntoreville in Ten -
nensoe, very little divergent from a right lino
towards the Atlantic coast of Goorgia. From
Gnntersville to tho noarest point of tho Coosa in
a direct line, the distance is twenty-five miles.
A canal here would bring tho Coosa Biver into
line, aa far aa Koine, and with only twenty-five
milea of canal, inland water communication ia
established for the great western centre, with
the wholo system of Alabama and Tennessee
