Thx alarm of fire which was sounded about
3 o'clock yesterday morning was occasioned by
the firing of a kitchen attached to the residence
of Mr. D. D. Craig, on Second street above
Oak. The boys In red, as usual, were prompt
ly on hand, and the flame* stayed before any
very serious damage was done. Our citizens
should be on the alert, and take all due precau
tions against the fiery element recolleoting that
just snob a cold and windy night as the one in
question was the data, not longaince, of a con
flagration that has proved a national calamity.
Fbeaxs of the Ice Kcto^-The beautiful
grounds of Mr. Singleton, with their sparkling
fountains, lively parteeret, and verdant ever
greens, attracted nj little attention yesterday.
Though the blushing flowers of summer had
paled and vanished before the sere and yellow
leaf of autumn, a now and brilliant spectacle
charmed every spectator end passer-by.
The sweet little fountain which sends aloft its
tiny crystal column, some twenty feet in alti
tude, swayed by the rude blasts which raged
and roared the live long night, was deflected
from the perpendicular, and oast it* spray upon
an adjseent holly. As each drop fell upon the
shining leaves It congealed, and soon long
strings of pendant pearls hung in clusters from
the boughs, and thickening, from the continu
ous icy shower, ere long assumed the size and
appearanoe of splendid stalactites in some earth-
covered grotto.
In the morning, the whole tree woa covered
with a magnificent tracery of iciolea of the
most fantastic shapes, which, agitated by the
breeze, shone and sparkled like diamonds in
the son.
It was a splendid triumph of nature over the
most rccherdte production of art ever dovisod
by man’s ingenuity. No limner or artist, dare
ever attempt to portray its rn.gniGo.no*.
The swan, from whose upturned bill the jet
of water ia projeeted, presents a curious and
laughable appearance. The falling fluid has
encased its wings and breast with an armor of
lee, and the poor thing looks disconsolate and
forlorn. A visit to this beautiful garden before
thaw has destroyed the^soone, would be well
worth the trouble.

Wise & Dobbs.—Our readers would do well
note the tempting and magnificent assort
ment of goods in store and for sale, at aston
ishingly low prices, by these gentlemen. No
crockery establishment at the South offers, or
can offer, belter inducements to the trade, or
individual purchasers. With ample means at
command, they go diroot to the potteries of
France and England, and import their wares
by the wholesale, and in the original packages.
With rents, taxes, and incidental expenses far
less here than in New York, why should they
not be able to compete on equal terms with the
merchants of that oily? Let every one learn
by experience that snob is indeed the fact.
The glass and china emporium of Messrs.
Wise A Dobbs is one of the salient features of
our city. Tho most fastidious taste may be
gratified in the vast and varied assortment of
crockery, lamps, etc., they offer to house keep
ers end jobbers.
Christmas is coming, and we submit no more
useful or beautiful present can be selected for

confiscated estates and all their rights as citi
zensof France, are preparing and will be in

measures will give rise to long and exciting de

for'proposals of general amnesty, which will be
setting freo the thousands of communists still
held prisoners in hulks and elsewhere, and will
be considered an equitable compliment of the
act of justice proposed to the House of the Or
leans. The President, with his well known cau

BACON—Clear rib Sidee (smoked) 9K @ 95i
I bavo cart fully examined the sample of “ Cen-
tory tvliito Wheat Whisky.” In color, tsata and
odor this liquor is without fault. It is entirely fiee
from any deleterious subatanco whatever; the ab-
senca of all trace of lead, and of oilier poisonous
or hurtful things in it is absolute. By distillation,
I find its alcoholic strength to be exactly that of
proof spirits by the present United States Law,
viz: 50 parts by volume (moaaure)of absolute al
cohol, 83.71 paits of water; by weight Ibis corre
sponds to alcohol 12J* per cent., and water 57K
percent. The ash is chiefly alkaline carbonato,
and is far lees in quantity than is found in the av
erage of good drinking water. No alcoholic liquor
can be purer than tbo sample of your “Century."

I can rocotnmeud its uso to tbo public. I bare ex
amined it for copper, laid, the alkaloids, and other
xjiaonous substances, but am happy to ray I have
. ound none of them. Tbo inspected Whisky con
tains 61 i«sr cent, by volnnio, or 43.50 per cent, by

Trof. JOHN DAUBY, Editor of the American Gro
cer, Now York, says:
Wo have received a cample of tbe "Centnry
Whisky” for analysis- We have conducted tho
analysis v.ith great care; there is no trace of metal
in it, and nothing that should not come from the
fermentation and distillation of the finest grains.
The bouquet ia natural, depending upon a minute
quantity of volatile oil or ether. We bave analyzed
many Whiskies, and bave never before met with one
as strong us this; they are generally several de
grees below the government standard, this is
slightly above. We are not a comioiseur in liquors,
but if purity and strength are desirable qualities
the "Century Whiskies” moat stand pre-eminent.

H. CABNOCHAN, Health Officer of the Port
' S ol I * ew Xork ' ba T s:
I liave tried the "Century” Whiskies and find
them to be of very superior quality. I am happy to
recommend them, as I believe them to be entirely
free from deleterious or hurtful properties. The
analysis of Frof. SiUunan is sufficient proof of their
groat purity, and I believe that they will become
very popular Whiskies wherever they aro once
used.
[Signed] J. M. CABNOCHAN, M. D.,
Snrgeon-in-Chief to State Emigrant Hospital,
Hoalth OfficerPort of New York, etc.
Prof. TILDEN, of Washington, D. C., says:
I have analyzed the specimens of the “Century”
Whisky sent to mo with request to that effect. I
find no Fusel Oil and. no traoo of any deleterious
mineral or metallic substance. The liquor presents
no feature which does not belong to the best
Whiskies, while it offers some unusual points of
excellence. Its color is dark, owing to the presence
of Caramel, which undoubtedly improves its tone;
the taste is smooth and the bead good. Tbe re
markable etrength of this Whisky, coupled with tbe
unmistakable marks of age which are to be per
ceived, its freedom from harmful principles too of
ten fonnd in such liquors, and its natural bouquet,
justify mein pronouncing it bath for medicinal and
domestic purposes a superior article.
