The Herald of Monday is out flaming for the annexation of Mexico and thinks if Grant docs not Uke hold of it the opposition will. “ None bnt timid over prudent and sleepy conserva tives" will oppose the project, and as for entire, that conscientious journal well remarks, “Groat and progressive nations aro never at a loss for a canto when a profound national policy or ne cessity calls for such action." And the same is true of “great and progressive men" of the modern stamp. Wo don't want Vexioo so mneh as the Isthmus, and wbat a stupid fellow to atop annexing short of Darien, while we are about it. If wa annex, let na at least not stop short of Hand's End of the North American continent. Mohtoomesy Municipal EutorioN.—Tho an nual election for municipal officers of Mont gomery, Ala., was held on Monday last, and re- suited in a grand victory for tho Democracy. They elected eight out ol twelve Aldermen, losing the Mayor and (lily Clerk by only 119 and 04 majority, respectively. The last bosrd of Aldermen stood throe Democrats against nine Radicals, and the Radical Mayor and Clerk had, at the same election, COO majority for the former, and 730 for tho latter. Our brothers of Montgomery rosy well claim this result a* a victory. The next time they will make a clean aweep. Two of the three Radicals elected Aldermen arc negroes, but—halleluiah —the noisome carpet lugger has no place, at all, in the picture. The negroes aeera to have kioked all that crew out of doom. Of the elec tion, the Advertiser, of Tncsday, says: The election yesterday was characterized l>y more turbulence and a greater disposition to riot than we have seen manifested here since the days of Wager Sweyne. For a while when a negro attempted to rote the Democratic ticket be was insulted and otherwise maltreated, and in one caaa at least, attempted to be beaten. The oaae referred to was in Ward No. 3, where a crowd of negro vagabond* bad gathered to "carry the election at all hazards.'' Home white Democrat* who were present interfered to pro- teet the negro who waa aaranlted, whereupon one of the impndent scoundrels shot into the crowd of wbito men, attempting, as it seems, to kill Mr. Tilgbam Offatt. The shot missed Mr. Offutt, but struck and killed a negro man. Another negro tired a shot, which at rook Mr. liiks in the faoe, and it is said still another ehot •truck a negro in the aide. The negro who tired the fatal shot escaped. Fortunately the row coded here, or there might have been a terrible difficulty. Woaaa AhD Wosex.—The Baltimore Son's Washington correspondent of the 3d, made a statement—which we published yesterday—to the effect that the debt* of the Southern States bad been increased $100,000,000 ainoe the war by the robberies and fraud* of the negro and carpet bag, and aoallawag State governments. Fader date of the 4 th, the same correspondent who has evidently been making farther investi gations, writes as follows which shows a much wane condition of affairs. He aays: The committee on the alleged ontragea in the Southern Sure* will not be able to report till after the holiday recess. The subcommittee wtU show that mnoo the close of the war the debts of the Southern State*, local and State, have been increased the enormous sum of two hundred aod fifty millions of dollars. This in- eludes laws which authorise the loaning of the credit of the State* to van one railroad schemes which were never carried oat exorpt for par - pose* of personal plunder. While the increased debts of the State* have necessitated increased taxation the rapid lacrosse of the oonnty expen ditures have everywhere created the most op pressive taxation, amonnbng in aom* icutanea* almost to practical confiscation.
