It affirms that the strongest of all historical evi dences for modern Spiritualism are found in the Gospels, and that the strongest of all proof going to substantiate tho Gospel narratives are found in the phenomena of Spiritualism, ra tionally interpreted: Christianity, freed from alien crecda, sustaining Spiritualism; and en lightened Spiritualism sustaining Christianity. Wo suppose those who read it will form their own conclusions as to the failure or success of the author iu this undertaking. hi Avon's Court.—Tho front seat was occupied i>y not less than eight or ten seekers after mer cy yesterday morning. “Protein” filled the chair, and while wo occasionally poke fnti i.t Mr. Roberta, it ia from no want of appli cation of bis ability to occupy tho chair of justice; “its only a way wo’ve got” as Josh Billings would say. B. r»tlen.«.i.. in tho captain, we at once recogniztd n familiar face, having seen his innocent connleruauco at tho same stand not !ei-s l luiu three times within two months past. Jto plead “not guilty” to a charge of attempt at robbery, bnt the evidenco proved that the Captain is very obliging and goes with every conntry nig (that will let him) who comes to town and sells cotton, to tho bank toseo that they are not cheated by tho bankers. When country nig gets his money W. B. counts it for him, and by a jiecnliar trick of legerdemain keeps back part of tho cash for himself. His efforts yesterdsy to secure twenty dollars proved an abortion, for which mistake ho draws on his banker for twenty-five dollars in favor of the city or retires to learn new tricks from Finney's boarders for thirty days Berry Brown brought a load of cotton to town and having a spare fif ty cents went for a bottle of china berry bust-head. Aba Fort, a youthful African “speculator” took him aside to play for drinks or cigars. Berry, of coarse, paid for the drinks and five dollars to tho city for buying such mean whisky. Abo fished up a Y from his trowsor pockets for tho privilege of speculating with tho next nigger that comes to town and gets drunk. Yi'rn. Hubert, a gallant son of the Emerald Isie, can spell ia the whisky spelling book clean past baker, and has learned tho cussing dictionary into words of ninoty-threo syllables. Ho was giving evidences of his knowledge in each department night before last to tho whole city, from a single point. Lest his lungs might bo injured by the strain upon them, and his biler “bust” from an over charge of sioam, a friendly policeman gave him a little bed at tho barracks until ho could get over his excitement. He was only charged ten dollars for tfco ted, and licensed to give an other lesson when ho feels like it. While the fnn about Hubert was going on, Mattie Stary (.-.ho looked “like a morning star-y”) thought it a good chance to soe tho conte&ts of a cash drawer near bv. Mattie owned up—becanso she couldn’t help it-and tak03 lessons from Captain Patterson in Finney’s boarding house for ten days. Then tho court went into tho investigation of an extensive cotton specula tion carried oa by a colored dealer at night, when everybody else is asleep. Ho was al lowed ono more day cf grace to prove his in nocence; after which we all put oa our hats and quietly dispersed. Vagrancy.—Macon is full of idle negroes. Some vicinities aro eo annoyed with them as mako life, to respectable whites, almost in tolerable. Within fifty feet cf onr own resi dence is a large tenement honso in which aro huddled together not less than ten or a dozen families.- We never pass tbo house, (and wo aro passing it at all hours of tho day and gbt), without seeing from three to six groat, strapping negro bucks enjoying their freedom cum dignitate, sitting perfectly idle, while the women, as a rule, aro more idle than the men. How do they live ? is the question wo would ask, but for tho fact that tho answer is out be fore tho question is asked. They mutt steal Not a thing can be left ont of sight for half an hour in any yard in the neighborhood bnt it ia missing. Two or three articles of clothing havo been stolen from our own back yard ithin fifteen minutes time; and not a piece of wood can to left from nnder lock; not much as a foot rquare plank. The winter being on hand now, makes it more imperative duly to look after those va grants at once. They haven’t sufficient cloth' ing to keep them warm, and thoy will not, of course, freeze. They uHl steal wood from some quarter, and not having sufficient bed clothing, they keep fires all night, nodding by them, thus placing the neighborhoods in which they livo in great danger of being bnrned ont. We never lio down at night bnt we expect to hear tho cry of fire before day. Bnt there ia great danger of these idle scoundrels becoming desperate, during tho hard winter months, from starvation, and actually taking by force, from defenceless women, such things as they can lay hands on. To a man (liko ourself) who has to leave a wife and babe alone and nnpro tected every night until one or two o’clock, this is a very distressing thought, and it is not picture of tho imagination. Experience has proven that sneh things very often occni. Let any man attend onr Mayor’s Court daily, and some idea can bo formed of tho number of these idling wietches of both sexes, who are larking within the city. From one to a dozen cases of stealing and vagrancy are called every day, and of course, not one case in ten, comes to tho knowledgo of tfco police. We insist upon it, that some stops bo taken at onco to abato this nuisance. If they remain in tho city it mast be more closely patroled, and our present poiioe force is not sufficient for tbe task. To poisons living in neighborhoods not infested by these vagabonds it does very well to talk londly of “too mnch expense” and enough police already,” but let them exchange places and circnmstanccs with others, and see if the cry will not bo changed. The city must be rid of these vagrants or a sufficient police force must be provided to insure safety to de fenceless women. It is not sufficient to catch and punish them after the act has been com mitted ; steps should bo taken to present tbe acta themselves. Waat do thoy ciro for thirty days in the guard-house? They really like it, be cause thoy are fed there. We hoard one of them aay a few days ago, in the court-room, after she had been sentenced to tbe gnard-honse, that she would be fed any way, and would have nothing to do while she stayed there. The necessities of the subject aro the only excuse we offer (if any were necessary) for the apace-occupied in calling attention to it. Unity Review ol tbe Market.
