The State vs. Eobeet J. Maetel—At the
eallina of the criminal docket on Thursday
morning, the Solicitor-General, I. W. Christian,
entered a node protequi in the case of the State
against Egbert J. Martin, who was indicted for
murder. The indictment haa^een pending for
two years, and the case baa excited much inter
est in the community. The defence urged in
sanity, and upon this issue there was a trial
more than a year ago which resulted in a ver
dict that the party accused was a sane man- At
the last term of the court the defendant waa put
upon trial as to his guilt or innocenee, and the
result waa a mistrial. About this time a peti
tion was circulated for the purpose of obtaining
signatures thereto, setting forth that the Sohoi-
tor-General had ably and faithfully dischargea
bis duty, that it waa the prevalent opinion that
the party could not be convicted on the evidence
in possession of the Solicitor General, and that
further prosecution would entail great erpenae
upon the oounty, and requesting the Solicitor-
General to enter a nolle protegut. During the
present term that petition with eighty, six signa
tures thereto was road in court. Upon hearing
the petition hia Honor Judge Sessions referred
the matter to the Solicitor-General as the proper

Druntusiek Appeal, 9fA nut
The Appeal animadverts with much severity
upon the oourse of the Judge and Solicitor in
this ease. It maintains that the ooat should not
l>e counted in the pnnuhment of crime; that
Martin committed a grav# offence against the
State, and not against so small a part of it aa
Glynn connty; and that the petition of private
citizens should not have been allowed lo inter
cept the course of justice. If oases aro to be
disposed of in that way, it maintains that it
would bo better to abolish the courts altogether
and allow a knot of citizens to administer the
law or not, aa may seem lo them best.
The Chronicle and Sentinel, of Sunday, has
an earnest appeal for a full vote at the election
next Tuesday, the 19th instant It says, truly,
that a full vote ia all important to show how
thoroughly and unreservedly the people loathe
and condemn the wholesale robbery and cor
ruption of the thieves who have harried Geor
gia so dreadfully for the past three years. The
article concludes as follows:
Let not an admitted party majority, however
large, beget anpineness and inaction. The im
pending election deeply concerns every interest
of society, for, as the public will find expres
sions at the ballot box, so will pnblio conduot
find direction in action. If misrule and malfea
sance and nnblnsbing dishonesty in administra
tion be bnt faintly rebuked, fraud and deceit
will prevail throughout the land, and corrup
tion reign in high plaoes. When publie thieving
is perpetrated with impunity, and acquires dis
tinction and ease with stolen wealth, where will
be fonnd a safeguard for common honesty and
individual uprightness? Let the people of the
State, then, rise and pronounce clearly and em
phatically, and with overwhelming force, as
with the voioe of thunder, their condemnation
of thieving Badiealism.so that it may be engraved
on the publio mind aa with the pen of iron and
the point of a diamond, that the first great
requisites for public distinction shall be com
mon honesty and faithfulness to publio trust.
Let the Democracy organize and poll their fall
strength, and all good citizens and honest tax
payers rally to tbo polls and pronounce the ir
revocable doom of Radicalism in Georgia to in
famy and ignominy.

The cost of «roving cotton to the planter is in

Mr. King enters upon the discharge of the du

from the position by force of public opinion,
but not nntil he had squandered vast sums of
money. The people of the county will, there

with no little anxiety, and be rare that his offi

We quote the following from the Atlanta
Constitution, of yesterday:
A Confidence Gaits.—Two men by the
name of Whitsett—one hailing from Baltimore
and the other from the West—on Saturday
night practiced the confidence game on an emi
grnt named Madden, by pasting spurious gold
on him and victimized hia oat of *220. As
soon as information was conveyed to police
headquarters. Captain John L. Johnson and
Lieutenant J. Sid Holland took the matter in
.off soon nabbed the birds. They deliv
ered up the money, and were caged. Yester
day while up in one of the rooms of the City
TT.n they made a frantic effort to escape, by
jumping out of a two-story window on the
ground. They were not hurt by the fall.
Both were recaptured—one after a hard chase—
and again lodged in jail. They didn’t want to
reeognite the Superior Court, perhaps ; Cap
tain Johnson and Lieutenant Holland are ever
prompt and active in the discharge of their
duties.
