What Happened to a Pialr of Confidence
Men on n Pullman SleepingCnr,
From the Kansu City Times. I
The other night an elderly and clerical look
ing individual earns aboard a Pullman car at a
point about two hundred and eighty miles cut
of here, and engaged a berth for this oity. He
took the lower berth of a section, the tipper half
of which bad been engaged by two dspper-Jook-
log individuals, who, ahorUy after tbe train
started, came back from the smoking cor and
took seats in their aection. Tho trio soon struck
np a traveling acquaintance, and judging from
the pleased expression of the three counte
nances, this acquaintance was mutually agreea
ble—and, as will pxesenUy be seen, profitable.
Tho eld. rly gentleman, whom, for tbe sake
of identification, we will call Ur. Greene, was
a retired merchant, from Central New York,
who was on hi* way to these parte to invest a
few surplus shinplantars in corner lots and
Kansas lands. He was one of those benignant
old sunflower* whose smUea boom alike upon
the just and tha no just, whose well filled pocket
book is always forthcoming to change a ton or a
twenty for some oaattal companion who doesn't
happen to have any small bills about him, and
whose worldly goods ere but legitimate spoils
for the confiden50 gentry—that is to aay, judg
ing from ootudo appearance.*. His two ooan-
lanions, whom wa will call Messrs. Sharpe and
xetchnm—because their rightfnl designations
are unknown to oar informant, need no mlnnte
description.
By and by the oondnetor of F. P. 0. came
around to oollect his fare for bertha. Tire el
derly gentleman being first ia order, produced
a pocket-book at once, well worn and well filled,
and paid his little fare, and then came the turn
of the other two. Now, Sharpe had plenty of
money, wtule Kstohom, though laden with ex
change on New York and Buffalo, hod run ont
of currency. Sharpe paid his small bill, but
Ketchum ransacked his pocket-book and vast
lockets in vain. Sharpe very generously of-
ered to pay his companion’s bill, bat the latter
wouldn't hear of any each sacrifices on the port
of his friend. He would, however, gladly ac
cept task for one of hi* drafts, if Sharpe would
be so kind, bnt under no circnmstanoea would
accept any ocher favor. It transpired that
Mbarpe would bo so kind. Mo Ketchum im
mediately produced a draft purporting to bo
drawn to his order on tho “Commercial
National Bank" of Buffalo, amounting to
$157 40. Bnt Sharpe ooold not make the
change. 'Would the elderly gentleman be so
unutterably gracious as to break a fifty for
him ? Of oonne he would—bnt bo couldn't.
But a happy thought struck Sharpe. If his
companion had each delicate scruples about
permitting him to pay his bill, perhaps the
elderly gentleman would purchase tbe draft.
Certainly ho would do that, but investigation
revealed that he had nothing smaller than a
one hundred dollar bill, except some desultory
~ * iven him for a five
larpe and
their finances
together and succeeded in mating np a purse
of $30340, Including the dixit for $157 40 and
$10 cn-Tcncy, whereat tho elderly gentle
man gaTe them two one hundred dollar notes
and his three dollars in change—they generous
ly “throwing in” the forty cents—wherewith
Ketchum paid his bill, and the couductor went
on his way rejoicing, while the financiers pre
pared to retire by having their bunks “mode
up." Morning came ana revealed the fact that
Sharpe and Ketchum bad found it convenient
to stop off at some casual station daring the
night, though the elderly gentleman was found
in hia berth all night Tbe conductor, fearing
from the indication that hi* passenger had been
swindled, approached him andaaid, "lam afraid
that that draft yon got last night ia a fraud.
“Well,'' waa toe bland response of the imper
turbable Greene, “I presume it is, bnt if it's
any bigger fraud than the two one hundred dol
lar notes were, why then I ain't forty-three dol
lars in good money ahead—which I think I am.”
The elderly gentleman then mid that he was
not in the habit of passing counterfeit money,
bnt be happened to have them with him, and,
having taken a somewhat exact measure of the
two chaps who had attempted to swindle him,
be had quietly determined to beat them at their
own game.
“If yon want anything more,” said he, “to
make thie affair all oatiafactoiy, I can give yon
good reference*, either in Kansas City or New
York, where I live.” Our informant didn't de
mand the references.
