Dr. Wills, formerly pastor of tbe Presbyterian Church in this city, and now President of Oglethorpe University in At lints, was in our office yesterday afternoon looking in fine health. DazssED Travers.—Oar “say so," in yester day's issue on thia sub j jet having been heavily censured by dealers in the article, we refer our readers to an editorial article in this issue upon the subject. _____ At a stated communication of Mizpah Lodge, No. 47, F. A. M., held Thursday night. Decern ber 14 th, the following officers were elected to servo tho ensuing year: W. W. Carnes, W. M J. W. Blacks hear. Sr. W; O. N. Dana. Jr. W J. H. Hertz, Sen. D; J. C. B anno a, Jan. D L. D. Ripley, Treasurer; H. J. Peter, Secretary. News Scarce.—So far ar news is ooncerned, Macon ia as dull now as it ia ordinarily in mid- inmmer. Nothing happens that is worthy of reoord, not so much as a dog fight or horse runaway. Everybody is intent upon basin' so that no time can be spared to raise a row, and thongh the marrying season is on band nobody indulges in that luxury. It’s really dis tressing. Almost a Fine.—Yesterday at about one o'clock the etore-room of Mr. Aflhor Ayers came very near being bnrned. A great number of cotton samples wore lying upon the oonnter near the stove, and by some means became ig nited. But for the timely aid from the em ployees of Campbell 4 Jones' warehouse, the store would surely have burned. Fortunately no damage was done except a lot of cotton samples burned. Anothxb Ubflzasant Dat.—Yesterday was a vary unpleasant, disagreabla day. Though there was no rain, tbe atmosphere was very damp, and the thermometer must have been in the neighborhood ol thirty. To a man with thin blood and predisposed to obills, who had to “take it” in search of that which waa not (lo cal news) it waa exceedingly unpleasant. About seven o’clock, r. M., the clouds passed away and the night was clear and beautiful. Staetliso !—A man who was apparently a stranger m the city, was found in a bad condi tion, almost frozen, yesterday. no could scarce ly speak and wore a haggard appearanoe gen erally. He was carried into the Georgia No. 2, and in less than half an honr Casey had fixed him np all right. He fixed him one of his famous hot punches, set him down to a com fortable fire a few minutes, and then gave him one of those good dinners for which his saloon is noted, and he waa soon as bright as a new dollar. Go and see “bow it is yourself.” Don't Forget that to-day the guardhouse and premises will be sold at anction. The sale will take place on the grounds, at precisely 12 o’elock. In thia oonnection, wo would call at tention to the advertisement for bids for work ing the streets, lighting the street lamps and keeping np the city pnmpa for 1672. The time will be out on the 20th, and not many days re main in which to oonsider the matter. Oar city fathers seem determined to curtail expenses and run the machine on a more economical schedule than heretofore. We suggest that bids be made “low down” if you don’t want them re jected. ___ Mrs. Moulton.—We are sure those of our readers who have read the enthtuiastio praise showered upon thia queen of soog by the cities wherever she has appeared, will not forget that she visits Macon next week, and will give oce concert on Thursday night, the 21st, at Ralston's Hall. Withont exception she has made the most favorable Impression, and been more unanimously and earnestly applauded than any Amerioan, at least, who has everfaoed tbe foot lights aa e singer. We have been reading no- ticeiof her deliciously sweet voioe and thorough culture, aa well aa personal beauty, for nearly two months, and wo do not remember one single break in the chain of golden opinion—one dis cordant note in tbe chorns of commendation that has attended her from New York to New Orleans. The sale of seats will commenoe on Monday morning, at 9 o’clock, at the book store of Brown 4 Oo. Matos's Coubt.—Henry Stevens, being reli giously opposed to all institutions, societies or lodges who would In tbe least possible manner interfere with, or infringe upon, the rights of dealers in chologogue, or other bottled light- nlng, proceeded to demonstrate his liberality of feeling toward that oppressed and down trodden class known as ten cent benzine dis pensers. Becoming excited npon the subject, he gave vent to his feelings in not very flatter ing language toward tbe I.O.G.T. Our police force all being members of that fraternity took him before the Mayor for speaking to disparag ingly of a noble order of which they are worthy members. Mr. Stevens paid five dollars into the treasury, which wrong from him such a look of penitence, that we have no doubt he would like us to suggest, for him, that the money be invested in temperance tracts for gratuitous dis tribution. Walter Gollers, a colored yonth of fourteen summer*, amuses himself by throwing rocks at glass windows. He will amuse the street hands by assisting them to shovel dirt for the next twenty days. J. Darby was feeling nervous and bad generally when the court ar rived, and it is therefore unnecessary to add any farther remarks to the effect that he had been drank the night before. His frolio only oast him an X, after which we and the mayor sneaked oat and went down town.
