Looks like A cry of “atop thief” was made at a fearful rate down town about aaveo o'clock last night, but we searched in vein for the man that it. He hollowed like he was in earnest, but when he hushed we eouldn t find him. Yesterday was too cold for anything to hap pen except the nsnaljdrnnka, and they kept close ly in doors. B—— the Agricultural meeting this morning at eleven o'clock. The place of meet ing is changed to the Court House. Ball at S with villa.—Wo are under obliga ti on* to the Committee of Arrangements, for an invitation to attend a ball at the Johnson House, in Bmithrills, on Monday evening next If Mr. Johnson makes such arrangement* for the guests aa he ia wont to do for the hungry traveler, we know that it will be a magnificent affair. If possible, we will attend, bnt we in dine to the opinion that our good looking young man who i**i«f* in the business depart meat, will Uy in his claims aa deserving the first leave of abaeoce. The proprietors and employe* of thia office who have ever visited Smithville, have a decided “liking” for the Johnson House, end always honor the gentlo- manly proprietor with a visit when we pass that way. Didn't Want to go.—Yesterday morning a colored individual, in anticipation of a good time oomiog, took oo too benzine, end began to let the feet be known by hallowing ‘hurrah far Christmas," and other expression* of joy at the bright prospect ahead. Offioere Hancock and Simpson mV*^ him to aooompany them to the guard-house, bnt he declined ac cepting their invitation, whereupon they dedded to foroe it upon him. Coffee resisted manfully, and nothing short of a little game of chanoe in which dabs were tramps and the officers held stocked bandit, con’d indneo him to acquiesce in their generous offer. He now has a slight headache, which hia nonor will relieve by ap plying the Uncet to hia pocket book at the oonrt this morning. Haioht ft Co.s’Ciacua.—To-day thia cele brated company pay ns a second visit for the . When they visited ns in September, the exhibition was one of the finest that bad ever been in onr midst. They come a i time, with many additional attractions. They have reoently purchased in Cincinnati, the zoologies! specimens formerly with Ames' cir cus and menagerie. These animals arrived in onr city yeaterday morning. The baby elephant, Bismarck, ia among lh» number, and thooghhe has grown considerably aii.ee ho was here a year ago, ia still “a baby’’ as compared with those that are generally exhibited. He performs many trick*, and among them, stands upon hia head. To the large number of star per formers, many others have been added, and the exhibition now comprises the beat arenic talent of thia and the old world. They give two ex- hibitions at the old cirens grounds to-day, one in the afternoon and one at night Fbzsbttebian Mission SaBBATnecnooL.—The superintendent and teacher* of the Presbyterian Mission school intend getting up a nioe little entertainment on Tuesday next for the children who attend the school. They have labored diligently, and hare a regular attendance of about thirty to forty children who are taught'in “things pertaining to the kingdom.” They propoee having a Christmas tree with a present I pupil. Of course, the teachers them selves will not be able to contribute ever, thing necessary for the occasion, end we hope that the church members generally will give liberally when called upon for donations. Too much cannot be said in praise of those who have or ganized the school nnder such unfavorable cir- nces. They have spared no energy in endeavoring to bring the children together ever; Sabbath evening, with no hope of earthly re- Bat if one sonl is saved through the instrumentality of their labors, they will have been amply rewarded. We thank the superin tendent for an invitation to be present next Tuesday, and promise to attend if possible. The Westhse.—The beat of weather clerks are sometimes puzzled to know how to make an aoonrate statement of the state of the oondition of the weather, and aa onr clerk pride i himself upon the fact that he never makes a correct or truthful summary, be hesitates to say what he don't know. But with a view to enlightening the people upon a subject of so vast importance, he makes the following misstatement which will be found as nearly inaccurate aa the circum stances will permit: For several days past, the area of highest pressure has been very low, ex- oept on elevated spots, such as hen roosts, from which points Christinas chickens are pressed into servioe. There has been a tolerably heavy pressure in some of the teait place*, supposed to be the result of steel ribs and strings. There was a heavy fall npon the pavement a few dayi ago, and a rise in baker’j bread occurs daily, before it ia baked. Probabilities: There will probably be some sunshine when the clouds clear away, unless it takes plsoe at night, in which case the sun won't shine until the next day or the day after. It will probably be Christmas day on the 25th of Deoember, end it ia very probable that the day following will be the next day after that day nnleaa it rains or turns cold, in which ease it ia probable that it won’t be any other day bnt the same day just following the day before that day. Heavy wind* are probable daring the next windy spell, and then they will ealmn down when they atop blowing. A farther iniight in to the future will be made when our self-ad justing, high pressure, new tome stereoscope to invented, which will probably be done when it to finished.
