SUNDAY MORNING. DEC. 24. 1871.
A Heroine.
>'Oh jm, air; there'* a many way* of picking
op a living a* ibe rich never thick* of. Von
wouldn't noppoee, now, that veiling a few water-
eraaaoe woold find a bit of bread and a monel
of tea and anger for three aonla; bnt it doea,
and for bnndroda more; and if you'd get np
early aome morning and lure a look at Farring-
doo Market, yoo'd be a bit anrpriaed at the trade
there ta doing in them bitao' green meat.
“I took to it when it pleased God to taka ny
Mary; and ahoaaid tome with hr r eye* already
mating and fixed at might away upon the far off
land, ‘Mother, darling,' aheaaid, ‘I’m going to
where Be la to whom they brought little chil
dren; bnt I can't taka mine, mother; yon mnat
keep them for mo. And all I oould aay to make
bar happy about her two little one*. I aaid; and
aa I aat trying to watch her with iny poor, old
dim eyes, that had grown hot and dry from
uinch crying, abe passed away from mo ; and I,
who bad hoped to have had her hand to make
my pillow amooth in the time when I was on
my leat aick bed, waa loft behind with her .two
poor bairn*.
Bardab, it waa hard—hard when my Ham
died—my ho*hand, you know. Be waa a steve-
doro, and got crashed between a ship and the
doek wharf—killed, air, fighting in tbo battle of
life for our daily bread; and he left me with
little Mary, nice yean old then; bnt we fought
our way on with eor needlee; for my eye* were
good then, though beginning to grow weak with
ahedding widow's loan. And we lived, sir,
lived on, which in these hard time* for the poor
i* something. It waa hard to see through, that
there waa sunshine and brightness out of door*,
and to know that it was to be enjoyed, but not
by ns, who had our work—always bard work—
to get just common thing* and dally bread, and
pay the bit of rent. But the yean flew on ; and
even while it seemed only yesterday that poor
Ham waa taken to the hospibti, and me sent for
to close his eyes, Mary would oome back from
the workshop with a tall, stout young fellow to
see her to the door.
West could I say, when she was a woman
I looked i
grown, and I
I HO happy and proud of him;
not shamed, yon know, but seeming to glory in
bun ; and I couldn’t complain, and tell her abe
waa forgetting her poor old mother, when it was
only ber natural love for a good, Hlnightfor-
ward, honest young fellow. Didn't it bring
tuck my own old times, when life waa young
for me, and everything looked froth, and green,
and shining, when Ham came courting to ace
me, and my heart Used to boat when I beard
the sound of his footsteps?
“No; I could aay nothing, only have many a
good cry when liar* was asleep, and I lying
swake to think of how sad a life had been mine.
“Bnt 1 would not make thia a trouble, I said,
and I made him welcome, and in all good
time, when they'd sarod a little money, they
were to be married.
“We livod at Htratford then, and Harry waa
a porter on tlio Great Kastern iUilwsy, with
eighteen shillings a week—a large sum, poor
Mary thought; and when it was raised to a
pound they wore to marry, and, as my poor lit-
tio Ians thought, bu rich. ‘A pound a week,
mother!' shed say, and tbon she'd reckon up
bow far it woold go, and bow rnnch they'd save,
and plot and plan bow I was to live with thorn,
and not work so bard, till she would catch me
looking, half smiling, half sad at her, and oorne
and nestle her head upon my shoulder.
“It's very hard to give up one thing after an
other that you love; but its not for the old to
be selfisb, and stand in the light of tbo young.
I loved iny poor Mary too well for that; and the
umo came, and they were married, and their
young buarts kuuw no sorrow wbilo they were
together; and being careful, first one babe,
and then another, seemed no trouble to them.
I lived with them, and helped all I could, so
that I was never in any way a burden. Clouds
they bad nono, and their lives wore too busy for
them to lie unhappy. Uprarly and away to his
work was Harry, while his wile would bo busy
with tboir little ones, and singing a Pont hko u
child, until it was timo for btui to coma back;
ami at last 1 used to go to bud every night
thanking God for the happiness that was theirs.
“And then csnio the storm that nipiied my
poor child's life, anil left me, a poor widow,
to scrape on aa I oould with the little ones.
“1 hadn't linen very well, and I was dull and
boavy, thinking a deal about what bad bap
pened thirteen or fourteen yearn before, and
seeming to aeo again tho cold looking, white
hospital wards where I was fetched to; end do
all 1 would I could not help going through ail
my intublo ■ over and over again, t ill I got so low
and cried ho, that I quite upset Mary, and she
bad hard work to keep from crying, l JO.
“At last, seeing bow miserable 1 luado her, I
cheered up, and she got tho tea ready for Barry
when be came borne, aud sot in his chair, and
got the baby off to sleep, ao that if bo was tired
the little tbingshould not worry him, and things
were all looking bright, and pleasant, and
homelike, for tho poor follow who didn't oome.”
“Half an hoar past his time—an honr—two
boon and then Mary began to show how un
easy she ! vas; but at last we beard steps, aud
abe ran to tbo door, opened it and then darted
back to me in tbo little kitchen, ber eyea star
ing, her faoe white and all drawn, and as she
cried out onoe, 'O, mother!’ in so pitiful a way,
she dropped ou the floor.
“But it was only a passing fit of giddiness
from the shock, for she was up again directly,
aud helping me to drag away the table; then
they brought home poor Harry on n shutter-
four of lus mates, and wo fetched a mattress,
aud laid him on it down stairs. Poor fellow,
be looked like death itself, with his pale face
generally eo ruddy and bright, and his eyea
sunken, and the hair upon his poor clammy
forehead all wet.
“It was that old story—erushedwhile shunt
ing—anutlier poor fellow stricken down whilu
lighting for hts bread.
" He would not let them take him to tho
pita), bo told na, quite calmly, for fear poor
Mary should not get there in time to see him;
aud when we tried to cheer him np, saying,
* Not ao bad as that,’ and talking, as yon know
how people will talk to aick folk, he only smiled
faintly, and asked Maty to sit by his side, and
hold hi* hand, and not leave him.
“This waa after the dootor had done all he
c mid, and said the poor fellow onght to have
been taken to the hospital; and, after a bit, ho
asked mo to fetch down the baby, and be kimed
it, and then hia little !>oy, and told me fe> take
him away again. And then before the agony
came on, ho asked Mary to lift hi* head upon
her shoulder, and begged ber to forgive him
for not doing more to provide for her and her
little ones, when, poor lad, ho had never spent
a shilling from his home; and went on talking
in that qniet, aad way, till I could not bear it,
for It was plain he knew whM was coming.

YOUNG AND RISING GENERATON.
The vegetative powers of Ufa are strong, tat in
a few yean how often tho pallid hue, the lack
luster aye, and emanated form, and the impossibil
ity of application to mental effort, show their
baneful joanem. It soon becomes evident to tlia
observer that aome depressing influence ia chec
the development of the body- Consumption is
talked of, and perhaps the youth ia removed from
school and sent into the country. Thia ia one of
the worst movements. Removed from ordinary di
versions of the ever-changing seanes of the city,
the powers of the body, too much enfeebled to give
zest to healthful and rural exercise, thoughts are
turned inwardly epon themselves.
If the patient be a female the approach of the
menses is looked for with anxiety aa the first
symptom in which nature is to show her saving
power in diffusing the circulation and visiting the
cheek wi'b the bloom of health. Alas! increase of
appetite has grown by what It fed on. The energies
of the syatam are prostrated, and the whole ooono-
my ia deranged. The beautiful and wonderful
period in which body and mind undergo ao fascinat
ing a change from child to woman ia looked for in
vain. The parent’s heart bleed* in anxiety, and
fancies the grave tat waiting for its victim.

CANCERS CURED.
H AVING been afflicted with Cancer, 1 was cured
in the year 1850, after trying many prepara^
tions and Cancer doctors.
I hare no new remedy to offor but the same old
remedy with which I was cured fifteen years ago.
I have since been practicing with the same remedy,
and have been succeesful in a number of cases, a
fuw of which I refer to below, as living witnesses
of the virtues of my medicine, some of whom,
like myseif, have been cored a number of years,
and yet have no symptoms of Cancer returning:
Mrs. H. B. Bloodworth, Liberty Hill, Ga.; Mrs.
Fannie Settle, Liberty Hill, Ga.; Mr. J. D. Boyd,

Ga. The above is only a few of the many names
that could be added to the list.
I cheerfully bear testimony to the fact of Mr. J.
M. Hardaway having performed a perfect cure of a
cancer upon Mrs. M. J. Bouyer’e eye, after eminent
physicians had failed to relieve her; and I firmly
believe hia Cancer treatment to be a specific for
