Ax other Huadea.—Yesterday morning a ne
gro man was found dead near the Baptist Mix
tion Church on Troupe Hill. He was badly cut
and had evidently received the wounds in the
immediate vicinity. The murderer is unknown.
The Weather.—Since Saturday last are have
had very unpleasant weather. The temperature
has been almost as warm as in mid anmmer, and
the rain fall has been very heavy. The water
courses are much swollen bnt we have beard of
no material damage done.
Killed.—In a difficulty yesterday evening
about 6 o'clock, John Fleming was shot and in
stantly killed by L. C. Kicks. U. surrendered
If to an officer. Aa the caw will be in
vestigated this morning we forbear comment
until the facts are brought out in open court.
The Streets.—Tho heavy nine of the past
few days have had a washing effect upon the
streets in the more hilly portions of the
city. On Arch street immense gullies have
been made, and we bear of others in the same
condition. The amhoritiw will, of coarse,
look after them aa rapidly as possible, and
soon aU will be well again.
Chrutkas Fun.—The boys bad any quantity
of fun, and everybody seemed to be enjoying
things finely. But the beat sport was realized
by those who ate and drank at the Georgia No.

Rattle at Calloc' To-night.—Because of
the fire excitement, the reffle for the horse,
diamond pin snd gun, at Carlos’ was postponed
until to-night. Each article to well worth the
price at which it is valued, while a chance to
offered to get one of the three for ton dollars.
Tbe three successful parties will be required
to treat tbe crowd to a fine supper and we know
they will have a nice time. Don't fail to bo on
hand if you want to have some fun.

of Constantine Chapter, No. 4, B. A. H., the
following Companions were elected officers for
the ensning Masonic year: Chas. B. Armstrong,
High Priest; John G. Deitz, King; O. N.

Sale or the Fine Painttnos Postponed.
The weather being ao unfavorable last night,
Mr. Levy failed to eeeare an attendance at the
hall where hie fine paintings are on exhibition.
He intended packing np and going away this
morning, bnt at the earnest solicitation of sev
eral parties, be has consented to make one
more effort this evening at 7 o'clock. We again
urge onr citizens to attend and take advantage
of this rare opportunity offered to secure gen
uine works of art. Remember that the sale
will poeitively take plaoe at 7 o’clock this even
ing regardless of the weather. This will posi
tively be the last opportnnity, as Mr. Levy will
leave on Thnrsday with such as remain unsold.
Supped at A veils' Hall —Perhaps onr chiro-
grapby is none of the best, but when we wrote
the article relative to tbe sapper at Ayers' Hall
for onr Sunday's issue, we wrote Thursday as
plainly as we oould. On opening tbe paper Sun
day morning, we fonnd that a printer had man
aged to make Tuesday of it. The supper takes
place on Thnrsday night, and we hope will be
largely attended by onr people. The object for
which it is given should touch a sympathetic
chord in every bosom. The proceeds are for
tbe benefit of the poor Fobool under tbe super
vision of tbe ladies of the Mulberry Street
Methodist Church. Surely, no citizen of Macon
will object to giving one dollar toward so noble
a cause. The ladies will spare no labor nor ex
pense to make the sapper such as will satify the
most confirmed epicure.
Febsonal.—We were pleased to receive a call,
during the past week, from Mr. Clark, Dr.
Ayer's traveller, who was in our town devoting
his time and attention to tbe preparations of the
great medicine man. This call has become a
pleasant annual to ns from the able and reliable
business character of the accomplished gentle
men whom this ‘firm send oat to transact their
business. No house is bettor known or valued
by tbe press for its promptness in settlement
than tho well established and popular J. C. Ayer
A Co., Lowell, Mass., whose medicines have be-
oorne a household necessity, and won the confi
dence and praise of alL Our own acquaintance
with them has extended over a series of years,
and we have invariably found them, their trav
elers and their medicines, worthy of tho com
mendations they everywhere reoeive.—Jackson
(TVnn.) Tribune.
A Koval Bow.—On Sunday morning, at
about one and a half o’clock, having just re
tired, we were startled by tbe screams of chil
dren, load cursing and the sonnd of blows near
by. Hastening to the door, wo fonnd that a
regular Christmas fight was going on among a
lot of negroes, in (be honae next the negro
Baptist Church, on Second street. Not feeling
a personal interest in the physical welfare of
any parly engaged in the sport, wo closed doors
and made a second effort to sleep, bnt with no
success for several minntes, so load wss the
disturbance. On Sunday morning the neigh
borhood was entertained (we learn) with another
of the same sort. Without any ill feeling to
ward the proprietor of the negro tenement
houses in that vicinity, we think that he should
be required to keep no disorderly persons in
them, or close them altogether. Since we have
been living near them there have been not less
than three or four disturbances upon tho prem
ises, and they almost invariably occur at night,
orach to the annoyance of the neighbors gen
erally. Ladies living near them are kept in a
continual state of dread when left sloxe after
nightfall. Will the authorities please look after
this? _
A Tiar to Southwest Geoegia.—Wc made a
flying visit to Clay county on Sunday last and
returned on Monday night While g' lug down,
wo were well oared for by onr friend Zass, and
on onr return by Mr. Harris. It was our first
acquaintance with Mr. EL, and we were by no
means unfavorably Impressed with his attention
to and care for the well being of passengers on
board his train. It is unnecessary to speak in
praise of Mr. Bats, as everybody knows he is
just as clever and accommodating aa a man can
We stepped into the Johnson House at
Smithville, and considering the fact that we
were not hungry, Mr. Johnson, by his kindness
and the tempting dinner set before ns, managed
to get a good square meal into ns. The Me ssrs.
Johnson are excellent feeders [and treat their
guests in such maimer aa never to lose a cruto-
. Wo commend them to the patronage of
the traveling public. We fonnd the country
everywhere flooded with water anjj the people
generally very low spirited. He cotton crop
is short in that section, and bnt few planters
have realized a cent of profit on the year's labor.
Many have come out in debt, and money is ex
cecdingly scarce. Business is doll, bnt a change
for the better is looked for by the merchants in
short time. Tho impression prevails that
moat of tbe fanners hire some cash or cotton
on hand, bnt are bolding for farther depression
of prices in merchandise. Wo hope it may prove
true, hot fear they are mistaken.
DisisTsors Fritz.—At about seven o'clock,
night before last, a Roman candle was being
fired off in tbe street, and one fire ball passed
into the store of Mr. A. Wsnnack. foiling among
a large lot of fire works. Immediately they
took firo and were throwing the destroying ele
ment in every direction throughont the build
ing. Tho flimes quoad rapidly, and soon the
entire building was in flames. The fire compa
nies were on hand promptly, and though al
most superhuman efforts were made, the head
way of the fire oould not bo checked until the
two buildings adjoining, one occupied by Mrs.
taelson as a dry goods store and the other
by Daly Jc Bro. as a grocery establishment, h«d
been destroyed. A portion of the stocks of Mrs.
Michaelson and tho Messrs. Daly was saved, but
considerably damaged. The respective losses
and amount of insurance of the parties, ss near
ly aa wa can get them, are as follows: Daly A
Bro.—lore $20,000, insured for $15,000 as fol
lows: $5,000 in tho -Etna, of Hartford; $5,000
in the Continental of New York, and $5,000 in
the Phoenix, of Hartford. Mrs. Michaelson-
loss $5,000, insured for $3,000 in tho .Etna, of
Hartford. A. Wsnnack—loos $7,000, insured
for $4,000 in the .Etna.
Too much can not bo said in praise of the
freedmen who labored incessantly and effec
tually in arresting the flames. They worked
where and whenever directed by tbe Chief of
thfl Fire Department It to another evidence
of the freed man's natural disposition, when left
undisturbed by Radical emissaries, to befriend
his former muter and sid in the general welfare
of the community in which ho lives. Oh, that
the day may speedily come when they will learn
that those who cared for them while slaves, en
tertain no feeling of enmity toward them be
cause of their emancipation; when they will
cease to listen to the advice of strangers, who
profess friendship only to use them for their
own aggrandisement; when the v will learn that
it to their professed friends who decieve and
swindle them and not their former milters. In
behalf, and at the request of many of the citi
zens of Macon, we thank them for their services
on Monday night

Washington, D. 0., December 26, 7:40, P. M.)
The low barometer which was in Now England
Monday afternoon has moved northeastward
beyond oar stations. The pressure has been
very uniformly distributed daring the day, being
somewhat highest in tbe Northwestern States,
and it has lisen decided'y at tho Kooky Moun
tain stations. The temperature has fallen from
Idaho to Wiaoonain, where dear weather has ap
parently prevailed. Clondy weather has continu
ed northof Kentucky and Virginiathis afternoon.
Partially cloudy and warm weather in the south
Atlantic and Golf States. Falling barometer
and doudy weather is reported at San Francisco.
Northerly winds prevail from Lake Michigan to
Nebraska and Arkansas, with light easterly
winds from the lower Lakes to the Middle and
East Atlantic.
Probabilities: The area of cold and clearing
weather, with northerly winds, will probably
move eastward on Wednesday over the Lakos
and extended southward to Tennessee. The
area of cloudy and threatening weather will pass
northeast over the Middle and Eastern States,
possibly with light Bnow or rain to-night. Par
tially dondy and mild weather on Wednesday
in the Golf and South Atlantic States, with rain
in Alabama aid Louisiana. Dangerous winds
arc anticipated for this evening.

Columbia, S. 0., December 26.—The report
of the Legislative Joint Investigating Commit
tee, which has been sitting in New York daring
the summer, with B. F. Witteman aa Chairman,
has appeared. It makes nearly three hundred
printed pages, and gives an elaborate review of
the administration of the State finances since
the installation of the present government In
regard to the State debt the committee cannot
beleive there has been the fearful troths that
stares ns in the face: that the bonds and stocks
printed by the American Banknote Company,
twenty-two millions five hnndred and forty
thousand represent the liabilities of the State,
for which the faith and credit of the State,
however unlawfully presented, ha* been pledged
for payment. The contingent liability incurr
ed by railroad endorsement swells the total
np to nearly twenty-nine millions.
In conclusion, report says tho committee,
in view of the atrocity of these discloenres, the
work of the present administration, or rather
of a ring composed of leading officers of the
government of the State, unhesitatingly say that
the Republican party which elevated them to
power most show its condemnation of such
treachery and knavery by immediate efforts, by
legtolative enactment as well as by every other
deliberate measure, to bring to justice those
who have prostituted the anthority with which
they have been clothed and flagrantly and crim
inally imperilled the trusts to them confided.

It Raves 75 Per Cent, of Fuel in Buruln?
T HE attention of Brickmakora In Georgia, Ala

Note—Tho undersigned will take pleasure at any
time, when in the city, in giving any information
desired in reference to this invaluable invention.
In a city like Macon where several millions of
Brick are annually manufactured, the great saving
in the cost of burning alone, wonld afford a fine
income, to say nothing of its convenience and per
