Mobtallt Wounded.—On Saturday hut, 23d
inat, at OrtewoldvUta, Mr. Hnbbard Reynold,
of Twiggs county, was stabbed in several places
in the body, by a negro man named Amos Gris-
wolJ. A gentleman jtut from Griswoldville,
reports that it was a moat wanton and unpro
voked attack. At last accounts Ur. B. was ttill
alive, bat no hopes were entertained of hia re
covery. The negro was captured and lodged in
jail at Clinton.
Tax Roads.—We hear numerous complaints
from our country friends, of the bid condition
of the public mads throughout the county. The
reoent heavy rains have washed them at a torn
ble rate, and, a few in feat, have not been
work*jl)t many weeks, and in some instances,
months. We have heard special complaint
the road known as the "Old Middl* Road,
leading from Maeon to Clinton. It is said to
be in bad condition from one point to the other,
and in many plaeea it is almost impassable.—
We hope the proper authorities will look after
all the publie highways, and have them pat in
good oonditian.
• Another Murder.—Or Monday night, 25th
instant, et about 12 o’clock, a negro men named
John Sparrow, living at UsxweU’a Mills, in
Jones county, a few miles below Griswoldville,
was murdered. He was asleep in his bouse
when some one hallooed at the gate end asked
him to oome to the door. Having no thought
of danger he threw open the door and imme
diately two abets were fired, apparently from
double-barreled shot gun, the second taking
effect in his broast, producing instant death.
There is nothing upon which to ground any
plcion aa to who the murderer was. John is
said to have been a harmless, inoffensive negro,
end so far aa any person knows wss withont an
enemy, either white or black.
Fatal Accident.—A sad accident occurred
near Hogue's brick yard yesterday morning at
about 11 o'clock. Johnny Daoey, aged about 14
yean, together with a friend of hia abont the
same age, were oat banting. One of them had
killed a bird which fell into the water and John
ny's friend bad polled off his ahoea and gone
for it. He aat down to put on his shoes and
Johnny commenced loading the gun. Hia friend,
whose back waa turned toward him at the time,
heard the report of the gun and when he looked
round sew him lying upon the ground. He ran
to him and found that by some means the gun
had been accidentally discharged, and the load
had entered Johnny's throat, passing ont at the
back of tbe neck, producing death in a few
minutes. The deoeased was a step son of Mr.
Patrick Peytoo, a machinist at the Southwest
ern Railroad shops.

citizens trill not forget the entertainment to be
given by tbe ladies of tbe Mnlberry Street

before state], the proceeds will be devoted to
the free school under their supervision, and they
are surely entitled to the support and assistance
of every citiEen of Macon; not alone of those
calling themselves Christians, bnt of all who
have one drop of tbe milk of human kindness
in their breasts. In years gone by poor schools
were almost unknown, tieo-mse unnecessary, in
our city. Bat by tbe result of tbe wnr many
who were onoe able to educate their children
have been left in indigent circumstances. Many

PnnnxTEniAN Mission Sabbath School
Christmas Tree.—On Tnesdsy morning nt
eleven o’clock, according to appointment, the
teachers and children of the Presbyterian Mis
sion Sabbath School met at thechapel on Wind
sor Hill, to enjoy the festival and Christmas
tree that had been prepared by the friends of
the schooL Abont eighty children were pres
ent, their little fsoes beaming with happiness
end innocence. A goodly number of the
friends of the school were there to witness the
joy and pleasure they had bestowed npon the
little ones by their generous offerings. Be
tween twelve and one o’clock the dinner was
announced and all invited to partake. The
children were orderly and respectful, not a sin
gle instance of rudeness or misbehavior mar
ring the festivities. Dinner ended, the Christ
mas tree wss arranged and the children end
teachers invited to receive the presents prepar
ed for them. For each child there were two or
three presents, many of them articles of cloth
ing, together with toys, fruits, candies, eta
Before the presents were distributed Rev, Wm.
McKay made some happy end appropriate re
marks, chaining the attention of tho children
throughout, with amusing anecdotes and apt
illnstrationa. To tho poorer children were
given principally the articles of usefulness, the
superintendent not forgetting that some
thing to amuse was appreciated even by chil
dren in want of necessaries. The distributing
of presents among the teachers produced no
small amount of merriment and laughter. They
were mostly of e ludicrous character, and one
elderly gentleman received ns his a toy sheep,
much to the amusement of tbe little ones. From
beginning to end it eras one uninterrupted
scene of pleasure and happiness None who
ere present regretted having gone, and all were
rejoioed to eee with what wonderful snooees the
Lord had crowned the efforts of the faithful

when life is ended, may they meet them in tbe
last great day, with the marshalled hosts of tbe

the anperintendent and teacher*, we thank the
kind friends of the school for their liberal con
tributions toward tba tittle Entertainment. May
the Lord reward them.

An area of low barometer developed in New
England Tuesday night, and has apparently
moved eastward beyond our stations. Bain and
snow have very generally fallen from South
Carolina to Lake Erie and northward, bat fair
and clearing weather is now reported. Rain
baa fallen on tbe Texas and Louisiana coasts,
and also in California, where the pressure has
steadily diminished. The area of highest ba
rometer his moved slowly southeastward to
Missouri, its influence extending very rapidly
to the Blue Ridge and to New Jersey. Clear
weather, with northwesterly winds, ia now re
ported over this region, and brisk winds have
prevailed from Virginia to tho Lower Lakest.
Riling temperature, with southwesterly winds,
prevail from Kansas to Minnesota.
Probabilities:—The barometer will probably
eontinne to rise on Thursday with north westerly
winds backing to the north in New Eugland and
the middle States and northeasterly winds in
