Fkesosal.—Wewere pleased to meet, yester

formerly Chief Justice of tho Stela The
Judge looks in fine health and is still as young
in spirits as in ante helium days. He reperts
money matters very tight and the people gen-
crally depressed in the land of flowers.
An Incident or CHSisnua—On Monday
evening, a negro who had laid in an over
charge of lightning whisky, managed to get
hold of one of the celebrated “two pound
paper bomb shells,” and set fin to tho tame.
At first it horned too slowly to suit his Whis
ky, and be began to blow it to expedite
matters. After blowing a time or two he ro>
marked to the bystatders “tf hit do bust shell

riling him dear of the ground and letting him
down again too quickly to be comfortable,
with no aign of an eyebrow, eye lash, or wool
on the fore part of his cranium remaining.
He goes it blind ever since and promisos that
if he gets well bell be more canful with fire
works and tanglefoot next Christmas.
Musdeks.—Since the beginning of the holi
days we have recorded not less than a half-dozen
murders in our own and the adjoining oountii
The papers from other quarters are teeming
with items of the same sad import. It is truly
heartrending to see bow Utile regard is had
for human lifo. Tho causes which lead to ao
demoralized a state of society are many, bnt
perhaps the most prominent are a laxity in the
enforcement of the laws, and the abuse of the
pardoning power by the wretches who have beeo
elevated to the Chief Executive offices of the
Southern States under the Congressional recon
struction measures. It is not however our in
tention to discuss the causee which hive led
to this reckless disregard of human life. In
common with all good citizens wa deplore it,
and long to see the day when the laws in rela
tion to such offenses shall be rigidly enforced.
IV o again insist that the root of the trouble is
the almost universal habit of carrying conoealed
weapons. Having never carried any deadly
weapon, we have never found occasion to use
one. There may have been occasions when
we would have acted hastily, had they been con
venient, but after the excitement of the moment
bad passed, we were glad indeed that we had
none. How many conscience tortnredw retohes
have mourned over hasty actions of the kind, in
which their fellow mortal’s live* were taken at
their hands, sorrowing in vain that they had
eTer been guilty of carrying deadly weapons
about their persons.

The Scfpeb at Atbeh’ Hall.—At about eight
and a half o’clock last night the crowd began to
assemble and soon the Hall was filled. We were
truly glad to see so liberal a disposition mani
fested by onr citinens in patronizing an enter,
tainment gotten np in so noble a cause. Too
much cannot be said in praise of the noble la
dies who have labored so diligently in the in
terests of the poor school. To say that the ta
bles were groaning nnder their burden of good
things, were making use of a common-place
expression which requires too gTeat stretch of
imagination to l>o appreciated. Suffice it to say,
there was ample provision made for every visi
tor and none went away hungry, unless it was
from fear of eating too mueh and being ha
rassed with dreams of their antediluvian ances
tors. We never allow gloomy anticipations or
fears of the kind to prevent us from feasting on
fat things when occasion offers, which, perhaps,
accounts for dyspeptic symptoms from which
wo sometimes suffer. The ladies request us to
mention tbo names of the following business
houses, and thank the donors who contributed
to tho supper : W. P. Carlos, M. K. Bogers A
Co., Mrs. Dinkier, Mrs. H elf rich, Seymour A
Tinsley, 8. T. £B. P. Walker, Small A Gamble,
Burdick Bros., B. A. Wise, W. A. Huff, and
others.
So ample was the supply of provisions that,
notwithstanding tbo great number of people
who partook. Dot one-half was consumed, and
the ladies propose oontinning the entertainment
to-night Tho price of admission trill be only
fifty cents, and wa trust the Hall will again bo
filled. In behalf of the employes of this office,
we thank the ladies for their kind remembrance
of the printers in the shape of a waiter well
filled with good thing! for tho inner man. We
who labor when others are at rest to furnish
them with news for the morrow, know how to
appreciate these tokens of regard for our ser
vices.
The Case or L. 0. Ricks —The committal
trial of Lncien C. Ricks, charged with the mur
der of John Flemming, was commenced yester
day morning, in the Superior Court room, be
fore Justice Harman. The State is represented
by Hon. 0. B. Wooten, formerly of Dawson,
bnt now a citizen of Macon. CoL W. is a law
yer of considerable ability, and won for himself
A splendid reputation in the management of the
defense in the celebrated Ames murder case in
Terrel county. The defendant is represented
by Messrs. Whittle, Anderson and Weems,
whose reputations as lawyers of ability are well
established. Before proceeding with the ease,
Esquire Harman remarked that it was custom
ary for two Justices to sit together iu such
cases, and that he had endeavored to have an
asaistant act with him, but had failed. The
forenoon was occupied with the examination of
the witnesses for the State, Messrs. E. Isaacs,
J. W. O’Connor and Dr. Meteor. Iu the after
noon, two witnesses introduced by the defedse,
Messrs. Seymour and Walker were examined,
after which tha Court adjourned to nine o'clock
this morning, when the examination of the wit
nesses for the defense will be continued. It
was our intention to give a full report of the
evidence in the ease, bnt it has been suggested
to us that it might be the means of biasing the
minds of many persons, and render it difficult
to make up u jury for u final trial. Reading the
testimony given nnder oath, wonld amount to
the same thing as hearing; and in eases of so
muoh importance as the one now nnder inves
tigation, it is almost impossible to hear or read
tho testimony, without involuntarily becoming
“biased or prejudiced for or against the pris
oner.” Under this view of tho case, wo have
thought best not to report the evidence, but
will, at the termination of tha trial, give to the
publio its final result Mueh interest is mani
fested, and the court roam was crowded with
spectators.
