Cock Fighting—a Barbarous Custom.
We learn that a heavy match has bean made
np in this vicinity, for a thousand dollars a
. X 00 aide, by which sooraa of game-birds will bo
pitted against each other, armed with eharp
and death-dealing giffa. The indomitable pluck
of thla fowl ia proverbial, and the contest sel
dom terminates until ^ona or the other antago
nist lies dead In the pit, or ia horribly mutilated
and disabled.
Indeed, a regular advertisement of the par
ticulars of the affair has been sent to this paper,
which we beg leave respectfully to decline pub
lishing. We are not the keeper of our brother's
conscience, Lot moat bo of our own ; and wo
regard this old Spanish pastime aa eminently
ciuel and imbiuting in its nature.
Especially is it calcnlated to awaken sungnln-
ary propensities in the minds of the young, and
pave the way to deeds of violence and blood-
abed. Wa say nothing of the gemblfcg and
vice, which are almost inseparable from inch
eoenea.
Bat our spotting friends nrge, we need have
no connection with the content, and xi enmmefi

A suit which, from Its novelty and the match

has beoome somewhat famous in Now York, has
jnat been decided in that city. .
It Is DoBremont vs. Penniman. DeBremont,
who pretended to belong to a noble French fam
ily, married Miss Penniman, in Paris. He
torned ont to be one of the worst of the class of
needy adventurers. He neglected and, it is
said, ill-treated his wife, and in I860 she died.
There was Btrong suspicions at the time tbalDe
Bremont was responsible for her death. Imme
diately afterwards DeBremont sued Mr. Penni
man, who was wealthy, under the provisions of
the French law—one of the most preposterous
on any statute book—requiring a father-in law
to provide for a son-in-law. He obtained jndg-
ment in over five thousand dollars, which Mr.
Penniman refused to pay, and returned to the
United States. DeBremont had the hardihood
to follow him, and sue him in onr courts on the
French judgment. He failed, of oonrae, tbe
judge deciding that no law of Franca oan affect
tbe domestic relations of onr citizens, when un
known to our laws and not founded on the com
mon law. Toe whole cess is s warning to those
