This Society has determined to bold its next
annua! fair on Tharsday and Friday, tbe 19di
and 20th day of Jane. After a fall deliberation
tbe preminm committee pieces before tbe pnb-
lic the resell of ita deliberations In tbe form of
a comprehensive premiam list, which covers a
variety encugh to make the fair a moat inter
esting ono. It Includes every variety of man
afoetare, all sorts of farm, garden and orchard
prodnets, tbe products of tbe kitchen, the
dairy, tbe hot house, lijwtr jar J and poultry
yard, stock of all kinds, machinery—in fact,
everything that can contribute to a successful
exposition.
None of the premiums are very large, nor is
it neceaary they should be. The impulse
whloh induces lb* people to enter these com
petitive exhibitions, is not a mere money con
sideration, but the higher emotion of a desire to
exoel, as compared with those who labor for the
same end. They look upon the preminm sim
ply ai authoritative certificate of the superior
excellence of whatever goods or products they
may have exhibited, and do not measure its
value by the number of dollars it represents.
The diploma is esteemed as highly aa five, ten,
or twenty-five dollars would be. The chief ob
ject is to be acknowledged to have exhibited
the best wagon cr plow; the best horse or bull;
the best batter or the handsomest display of
roses; tbo best bread or the handsomest quilt;
the best bushel of potstoes or the finest piece of
need/e-work.
Henoe it is that the committee has succeeded
in preparing a good premium list. It covers

L. J. GUILMARTIH & CO.
GsxxnAL Ehwaud Johksox.—A telegram from
Richmond, on the 3d instant, brought intelli
gence of the death of Qenoral Edward Johnson.
This gentleman before the late civil war was an
ofUcer in the United Slates army, and served
with distinction in the Florida and Mexican
wore.
When the war betweon tho Statos was immi
nent, and Fort Sumter hod been fired npon, hia
strong Soulhorn sympathies manifested tliem-
■eivee and ho resigned his commission in the
Federal army, and by n circuitous route reached
Richmond. Hero he was appointed Colonel of
(he 12th Georgia regiment, which rendezvoused
at that plaoe ebont the time of bis arrival there.
He led the regiment daring tho oarly part of the
star, and mnch of the honor won by It in many
a hard-fonght battle was dne'to his ekillfnl
ootnmanderablp, excellent discipline, and nni-
form kindneia to bis men. His soldiers never
lacked anything that it was in his power to pro
vide.
After the battle at McDowell, May 8th, ISG2,
In which fight he was soverely wounded, he was
made a brigadier generaL Bnt he was too val
uable and able an offioer to serve long In this
capacity, and bni a ahort while elapsed before
he was made a major general, in which rack be
■erred gallantly until the close of the war. He
was twice taken prisoner by tho Federal troops
daring the conflict.
Since the srer General Johnson has been
traveling for a New York bonso. This vooa
tion was selected by him, because of his love
of activity and change. He was not satisfied
to remain long in a pi.es but wanted to be
going all the while. He was a man of compe
tent means to settle down to a peacsfnl and
quiet life; bnt his natnre inclined him to ao-
tivily and change; hence be selected the occu
pation mentioned above.
General Johnaon was well known to many
persons in this section of the State, as the
12th Georgia, which served under him, was
raised principally hereabouts. Those who sol-
dieted under him will most deeply feel, and
xkost sincerely lament hit death.
It remains now for the peop’.o of the city and I t j onB| to n3Q t he whole foroe of United States,
