By and by tbero oame along that same old

says he, “Attention! Comrades and fellow-

With that thoy scattered, and presently I
board the scream* of a young lady in deep dis

As soon as she saw tho General she threw her

restored to her family and kin. Never, says
tho General, till I see yon happily and appro

to tbo niggors, *' bring forth tbe robes of free

With that, nn o'.d darkey wonch produced the

on a wig of pnre Afrioan wool. Then they un

smoky and alive with vermin. I oonld smell

Urg.-st tstabhfhmcnts on CLe-tnut street, not
tloman, at least so to all appearances, attired in
tho most fashionable manner. Sauntering
inside with an easy grace, he requested to see
some jewels, stating that he had desired to
make a Urge purchase. He carried in bis band
a handsome ease, or bag, which he deposited on
tbe glass before the clerk who stepped forward
to wait npon him. He was very particular in
his choice, bnt at last selected abont $2,000
worth of jawelry of various kinds and styles.
As Ihe clerk waa abont to pnt tbo nnmerons

ficiently Urge to -fibld all his purchases. Into
thU tbe cleik pnt the jewelry, snd handed it
back to his customer, who locked it, leaving
the key in tbe lock, and replaced it in the bag,
closing tbo latter. Then patting his gloved
hand into the brrari pocket, he exclaimed, in
great surprise, “ Well, howfcrgetfnl lam! I
lave left my book and money at the hotel. I
must go bask and get it. Very careless of me,
very. Yon will, of oooree, want to keep this.
It wouldn’t do to trust an entire stranger with
each valuables,” and, opening the bsg, he again
took ont tbo little bex and handed it to the
cleik. “It’s very annoying, bnt I will drive
right to tbe Continental, and bo back in

remarks the elegant gentleman returned to
his carriage, and was teen to drive away
in the direotion of the OontineoUl, tak
ing with him the nice and innocent little boy
he had brought. They waited at the store for
him a long time to oome back. In faot, he has
not come back yet. At last a light dawned npon
the terrified clerk, end bereicbed for tho beau

‘Oh, it’s all right, of course,” he hoped in

SYMPTOMS OF CATARRH.
Prevalent in America and Europe.
1. Of the Head.—Tingling, itching, with a sense
of dryness and obstruction of the nose, sneezing,
running of a watery secretion; aa it progretses,
the secretion becomes mucous, entire obetruction
of one or beth nostrils, n&wking, tickling of the
throat, coughing, etc. 2. Catarrh of the Chest pre
vails as an epidemic sometimes, and is called influ
enza ; with or without fever, and many of the
symptoms juat mentioned; there ia oppression
across tbe breast, rawness and turning of the
throat, first djy, afterward a copious eecretion cf
nncous, which may become opaqae or frothy, dif-
fljnl y of breathing, pain in tbo head, aud dull
feelings, a eenae of soreness, extending under the
breast bone to the stomach pit; the fits of cough
ing may occaEion vomiting, oppression, prostra
tion ; as the d sease progresses, the sputa becomes
ropy and viscid I bis disease is called the Grippe
by seme. Catarrhal Inflammation of the eyes
arises from colds, causes obstruction of the ear
passages, watery eyes, fistula, lachrjinalia, dimness
of vision, etc. . , „
SUPPRESSED CATARRH miy produce inflam
mation of the lungs, brain or eyes, or give rise to
rheumatism, nervous duorders, weepiDg, moaning,
tremors and convulsions, drowsiness, chilliness,
sUrtirg. twitching, palpitation of tho heart, etc.
When the frontal sinuses above the eyes, posterior
and anterior nasal patsages, become dogged up,
and even the antrum or cavity of the cheek
bone become3 filled, or partly, it often
produces a preseure on the nerves that
supply these parts, and pains likt the
most excrutiatirg neuralgia ia the result. The
disease follows the mucous membrane through the
eustachian tubes to all parts of the same mem
brane of the ear, causing hypertrophy of the drum,
interferes with tbe functions of the glands of
Wharton, which secrete the wax; a dryness follows,
hardness of hearing, roaring, buzzing, einging,
whistling, cracking, the ringing of bells, and simi
lar noues, which vary, and which are simple effects,
and when the cause is removed, the effects cease:
this hardness of hearing iccreates with each cold.
Dr. Jones hus made old standing dia oases of
every name a speciality all his life. He ia well pre
pared, and performs all the more difficult and del
icate operations in surgery, especially of the eye,
ear and nose. He is a graduue of the beat medi
cal colleges in Europe and America, and Wa diplo
mas proving the same are suspended in hi3 office.
G* Letters containing cue dollar will be an
swered.
Dr. Jones’ fees vary from $40 to $2000. His
terms are cash. His fees are considered very low
for the great amount of good he does.
Opthalmia or Sore Eyes,
Of these there are nine structural varieties, each
of which have peculiarities, but are very much
alike in many rsspects, and are cured by Dr. Jones
without burnings or caustics of any kind, in from
twenty-four hours to a month or two. Tbe patient
need not be with him but an hour in any case.
Strabismus, or Cross-Eyedsess
Xs a a contraction of ono or more of the muscles of
the eye; it is remedied by dividing the musclo
which is contracted; is attended with no danger,
and ia on the surface of the eyeball; we can re
store all such cases to their natural appearance and
sight by a skillful operation which we have per
formed eleven hundaod times in twenty years, and
in which we are always successful, as in fact, we
are in all delicate and difficult operations which Wd
are prepared to do off-hand.
