DIRECTIONS FOB COMPOSTING.
To every ton bushels of seed thoroughly moist
ened with water, add cno sack (2C0 pounds) of
Phoenix Guano, and mix in this proportion until
the quantity required is prepared, transferring tho
su-cossive mixtures to a pile or heap, under cover,
until wanted for use.
Below wo give We indorsement of tho highest
authority on agricultural chemistry:
SiizrriznD Scientific School of Yale College, )
New Haven, Goss., January 20,1872. f
Deau Bib—Your plan of “amraoniatirg” the
Phoenix Gnano by composting it with cotton seed,
is one that mnst giro excellent results. I have an
alyzed a sample of ginned cotton seed, to which
abont fourteen per ceat. of lint was slid adhering,
and found it to contain in tho air-dry state 3.7 per
cent, of nitrogen, which corresponds to 4% per
cent, of ammonia, a quantity aa great as exists in
the very best brands of ammomated superphos
phate, and one-half as much as occurs in tho first
qualities of fish guano. A compost made by mix
ing Fhconix Gnano with, say, twice its weight of
ootton seed, and allowing We whole to heat, wonld
constitute a very rich and actire fertilizer. Tha
cotton seed develops, in its fermentation, fatty
acid, and acetie acid in considerable quantities.
These would not only effectually prevent any loes
of ammonia gas, but would also act very decidedly
upon the gnano. rendering its phosphates more sol
uble and more active. There wonld doubtless be
somo loes of nitrogen, since this element U liber
ated to some extent in the free state when nitro
genous organic compounds decay in preeenco of
oxygen, bat this Iobb would not be so considerable
as to prevent the compost from retaining a high
degree of fertilizing energy. Yours, vety truly,
S. W. JOHNSON.
