Hr. Stephen* In Congress.
The Baltimore Gazette lannchee some shafts
of ridicule st Mr. Stephens in Congress—Mr.
Stephens, "who cannot believe that Mr. Jtffer-
•un la dead.” Well, wo sre glad that Mr.
Stephens can’t forget the principles of Mr. Jtf
bma They are the tree principles of the gov.
ernuent.' The whole scheme originated mainly
in the mind of Mr. Jefferson, and if he did net
comprehend his own handiwork, who does?
So long as the government was ran within
gen shot of the line of its traa theory, it vs
indeed the bed government the world oversaw.
It there 's living man who daro say it ia better
now—ton on the principle of physical force end
central domination f Is there one politician
connected with it, whose talents, patriotism and
pnblic and privale virtue commands the adrni
ration and rovarenco of bis country ?
11 there was ever time a hen a min needed to
remember Jefferson and tbo intellectually and
■noisily angnst sagas of the olden time, to es
cape niter despair of the fotare, now is that
time. What tai been mty bo again. A mer
ciful G,d may yet send ns another line of great
tldeemtn, animated by high and nobis par.
poets—impressed with their va:t respouibili
tits, and bringing to the aiseharge of their da
lies an cxaltod love of their whole oouctry and
their race. Borne publio men may yet spring to
life, of each a lotty bearing that the sp rit cf
personal and party polf and pettifoggery may
.tend rebuked and abashed in their presence
bat until that time comes, for heaven's sake let
os live in the memory that there was a time
when men of great cools directed the govern
moot end set an trample of pnbllo and private
v line, end not of meanness and rascality to the
people.
There was a time when, nnder the inspira
tion of their presenoe and example, the lnfla-
euoee which surrounded the government exalted
the people to a higher and holier patriotism, ia
.teed of dragging them down to the slams of
political prcfl’gacy.
Mr. Stephens can't forget that tone. Weil,
(hank God for so tuaoh. Believes that it may
yet live again. We are glad that Stephens has
ko much faith and hope In hie composition.
And while be remembers and ia inspired by the
great soul, of the great fathers of the republic,
we don't believe that Mr. Stephocs will be gnil
ty of e falsehood, or a theft, or aoy meaonese
or radios shatover in the diaoherge of his pnb-
Ue Unties.
And we wish the Gazette, so far from ridi
culing Iboso memories would cliog to them and
encourage the whole Democratic party to cliog
to them with in, x treble tenacity-for let them be
araored the Government of the United States
must be ob' oked In its downward oareer of da
privity and corruption, or it will bo a mere

Gnmnitn—I noticed tho postponement of

the people who are interested and want the

capitalists here to see that the citizens of Geor

Tiul o» Tax Patzut Am Baixu.—The
Knoxville Frees and Herald of Tuesday reports
the trial of the Fatent Air Brakes on tbo East

the power of the brakes were made. On the

AxoTBn Law T, SwrsDaz Caxriross.—The
President signed on the last day of the eessioD
of Oongress a bill so ooostraing the bankrupt
law as to allow bankrupt, the exemption provi
ded by the oonstitntion and laws of each Stale
in 1871, snch exemption to be valid against old

Southern Republican Senators notified the Ad

Tbe last proposition of oar New England

stated that she remembered having seen Woah-
