Dxau Sm—Your plan of “ammoniating” tho
Phccnix Guano by composting it with cotton seed,
is ono that must givo excellent results. I luvo an
alyzed a sample of ginned cotton seed, to which
about fourteen per cent, of lint waa still adhering,
and found it to contaia in the air-dry etate 3.7 per
cent, of nitrogen, which corresponds to IK P<*
ceut. of ammonia, a quantity as great as exists in
tho very best brands of ammoniated euperplioe-
phato, and one-half as much as occurs in the first
qualities of fish guano. A compost mads by mix
ing Phccnix Guano with, say, twice its weight of
cotton seed, and allowing the wholo to heat, would
constitute a very rich and actiro fertilizer. The
cotton eeed develop*, in Us fermontation, fatty
arid, and acetie acid in considerable quantities.
Theao would not only effectually prevent any lots
of ammonia gas, but would also act very decidedly
upon tho gnano, rendering its phosphates more sol
uble and more active. Shore would dottbtloes be
some loss of nitrogen, since this element is liber
ated to somo extent in tbe free etate when nitro
genous organic compounds decay in presence of
oxygen, but this loss would not be so considerable
aa to prevent the compost from retaining a high
degree of fertilizing energy- Yours, very truly,
