Dralh ora Modem at Mercer Cntverwtly.
It is a sorrowful duty to bo called upon to
chronicle the death of another student at Mor-
oer University. Mr. Albert Stafford died Fri
day night aboot ten o’clock, after only a few
hour*’ illness of oerebro eplnal meming ttia.
Tho young men had been in the city only
forty-eight hoars. He was ont fa that bitter
col.l weather of Tuesday and Tnrsiay night —
which waaoertataly the most trying weather of
the season—and contrasted a violent oold. Be
appeared, however, at hia mathematical recita
tion Friday morning, and demonstrated bla pre
positions with his usual clearness and thorough
ness. He did not, at that time, complain of
being ill. Later in the day, however, be did
oomplafa, and toward evening he grew rapidly
worse, and by ten o'clock was dead.
Mr. Stsfford was from Dalton, whither bis
remains were sent yeeterday morning. Ho was
about eighteen years of sge, of most exemplary
habits, was regarded by tho Faculty and his
fellow students ai one of the most promising
yonug men in the college, and wat greatly be
loved by all.
This death has caused no feeling of alarm
among the students of the University, all of
whom are in good health. There is no csss of
sickness among the students, and no nudue ap
prehensions of any. There hu not been a case
of meningitis fa Macon before for more than e
month, cor of any other violent disease. The
yoneg man oonld cot have contracted it here,
nor oonld be have oontraeted any pestilence, no
matter bow virulently the atmosphere might
have been tafeetod, daring the ihort space of
time that he was here previous to bis death.
There is no doubt that his illness was occasioned
by exposure to tho severe weather while on his
way to Macon.
Below will be found a statement by Rev. A
J. Battle, D. D„ President of the University,
of the fact and circumstances of the death of
the lamented young man. This statement is
made by tho Doctor to allay all unnecessary ap-
prehrntion sad to forestall extravagant and
alarming rumors:
BdUort Telegraph and Jfessenger: It be-
onmes my duty to report the death of a student
of Mercer University from meningitis on Fri
day night, tho 7th instant. This painful event
took place in the new cottage recently rented
fo+tndenta' quarters in the vicinity of tho Uni
versity. The yonng man was Mr. Albert Staf
ford, cf Dalton, a young man of muoh promise,
and a member of the Sophomore oiass. He
had only been in the oity about forty-eight
hours when tho disease made its appoaranoe,
and the meningeal symptoms developed them
selves only about two hours before bis death.
He bad been exposed in traveling to the ex
tremely bitter weather of Monday, Tuesday
and Tuesday night, and had contracted a cold
fa oocsequence. He lodged with a single room
mate in a comfortable chamber with four large
windows farnlahofi with blinds, built at tho
northern corner of tho ooltage. So far as neat
ness, ventilation and general comfort were
concerned, there was nothing to be dcBired. He
had only visited the mess building at intervals
for recitations aud meals. This mysterious

Pesils of the Season—The inhospitable winds
and chilly fogs of spring are unwelcome visitors
the feeble and ailing, ard are by no means conge
nial to the healthy. If there ia any germ of dis
ease lurking in the eystem, they aro enre to devel
op it, unless proper precautions are taken to pre
vent such a misfortune. Bilious complaints, dys
pepsia, nervous debility, rheumatism, irregulari
ties cf the bowels, and disoidars which affect the
kidneys, are all aggravated by tbo peculiar condi
tion cf tho atmosphere at this season. Invalids
who are subject to any of these disorders, or have
a predisposition thoroto, ehonld therefore forearm
themselves against danger l>y strengthening the
digestive orgvns, tho nervous sjstem and the mus

Btimnlatirg tonic and regulating modirino is more
urgently required than in the spring; and faero is
no preparation of that cIssb in which ao many vain-
able restorative and preventive properties are com
bined in such a perfectly safe aud harmless form as
in Hostetter’a Bitters. It may be stated positively,
nncontradictable fact, that a course of this
agreeable vegetable specific, commenced now and
continued through tho spring months, will effectu
ally shield the inhabitants of marshy and mias
matic localities from tbe intermittent and remit
tent fovers caused by unhealthy exhalations from
a wet soil.

Tnx A., M. and M, R. R.—The Atlanta Con
■titntlon of yesterday b&s the following para-
•graph:
A strong corps of engineers will commence
the snrrey of the route of the Atlanta, Monti-
oollo and Maoon railroad, Monday morning, at
Covington. Major Campbell Wallace will posh
the work forward.
This to tho road, the claims of which were
presented to the Board of Trade by Mr. Geo.
H. Haxlehnrst, a fortnight ago, and which
special committee of that body now has under
consideration. This committee, it to expected,
will be ready to report to a general meeting of
the Board of Trade which to to be held to-mor
row night.
The people of Macon will rejoice to know
that so aotlve a movement to on foot to increase
tho railroad facilities between the West and this
portion of the South. While the people have yet
expressod no choice between the two rival lines
which are presenting their claims to them, for
Ihe purpose or eliciting material consideration,
it to oertafa that they will heartily co-operate
with that which promises them the earliest new
line of communication with the West.
As has been previously stated, the committee
have before them fall Information respecting
the propositions of these rival companies. They
have conferred folly and freely with gentlemen
who are prominently interested fa both move
ments; and the report that this oommitiee
will make, after so thorongh a canvass of the
matter, will have great weight fa determining
the aotion of both the city ooanoil and the peo
ple of Maoon with reference thereto.
The Maoon, Montioello and Atlanta Road hu
been very fortunate fa securing Major Camp
bell Wallace si Us President. No man in the
Booth hu a finer reputation as a railroad builder.
He does not ally himself with any movement
that does not present tbe elements of suooeas.
And no man can enter the great money market
with railroad securities with a better hope of
negotiating them than ba can. Natnre does not
multiply men of his kind very rapidly.
