The *Iivaales el Mexico. 1
Mexico groans to-day coder the indignity ef
e pwrsolt of thieves and meaaadesn setose tbe
Bto Grande, into bar territory, by tbe United
States forces under General MeEetmde. For
more than a year tbe Texas frontiers men have
been suffering under tbe atrocities and depre
dations committed by the Indiana and other
gengs of banditti who, organising their expe
ditions on Mexican soil, cross tbe Bio Grande
at night—raid upon an American settlement
killing tbe men—ou'rsglng tbe women—burn

tbemaetvee end the victims of their depreda
tions, claim ths protection of the scored toil
and Government of Hexioo, and, deride all at
tempts at redress. -
These raids have been almost of weekly oc
currence, and are skillfully planned so that
of them shall make a safe opportunity for tbo
next.' For, while tbe military end settled are
eonoentrsted in pursuit of one gang, another ia
ready to cross a hundred miles above or below,
and still more effectually spoil a oountry deco
ded of Ms protectors in the pnzanit of parties
committing the provisos robbery.
Now it happened that tbe last time this expe
dient waa attempted proved inopportune. In
the ardor of pursuit General McKecxie forgot
all about tberiver—Mexican soil and every thing
else but the thieves and outlaws. He followed
them in bot vengeance and coming np with
them, made a righteous oaae with tbe whole
party.
Barely if Mexico cannot reduce such people
to order, ahe ought to feel obliged to tbe United
Stales for taking the job off her bands. But
If abe can do It and refuses to do it, tbec it is

The Mobile Register disoonmee on tbe vir-
tu«b ot bathing; and it is an Illustration of hu
man oerversity that any "nob Aanmiae .Iiuuld
be needed where tbe people oen delectate them
selves In tbe pure, bright, green, salt waters
of tbe Golf. One would imagine that those
people would be ee fond of sporting in tbe wa
ter as the Sendwioh Islanders.
Bat here, in tbe interior, where the water is
fresh, and generally aooeaalble only at some in-
oonvenlenoe, people are apt to negleot bathing.
Let such reflect on tbe vast daily exudations
from the body in the form of insensible and
liquid perspiration during tbe hot weather.
The akin should be thoroughly deansed at
leaat onoe every day, and the beat time to do it(we
think) ia before going to bed. Let every
healthy man wash In pure oold water, first ap
plying It long and rigoronaly with a sponge to
hia head and neck, then to the body and feet,
and Anally scrubbing himself dry with the
thicket and ooaraeat towel he can procure.
Tbs ahoek and reaction will make a tired man
feel as rigorous aa a oolt Will give him oool,
quiet and healthful sleep in the warmest
weather, and he will wake in the morning dean
and fresh for the dalles ot the day.
Some physicians protest agalnat bathing at
night; bnt if one eats only a light supper, he
will find experimentally a oold bath ia tha beet
possible preparation for sleep, and as soon aa
be beoomes accustomed to It, a luxury that he
will antidpate with pleasure all day.
The good mother always pnts her children to

One of fqebler constitution, who finds

A Vacant Office.
For the benefit of tho trooly loyl in this see-
tion who loathe the idea of work with such deep
disgust, we are going to tell them where there
is a vacant berth,so that they oan apply for it in
season. It is the offioe of mail-carrier between
Cheyenne and White Olay.some where ont on tbe
line of the Pacifio railway. The pay is good,
and tbe ebanoes for fame prodigious. J. F.
Garter, tbe late incumbent, became famous,
tad this is how be did it. Wo quote from tbe St.
Loots Republican:
He bad two horses and n light wagon, and
was thirty miles on bis way from Cbeyeune
when he heard a shot and fdt a bullet enter
his neck. Holty over in hit wagon, and his
team commenced running away, and more shots
oame and peppered him and hia wagon and
hones like e hot hail-storm. But tha team ran
faster and faster, and the band of Sioux,
mounted on horses fleet as the wind followed
like a cloud full of lightning. Tbo mail-oar-
rier was thus chased nine miles, and bis. team
ran into a camp ot frieadly Cheyenne*. Tbe
storm ceased; the Sionx were not strong
enough for the camp, and tba Chayeanas
protected the weather-beaten carrier. The
wagon waa fall of boles as a sieve acd
there were nine distinct and separate bullets in
Carter's limbs and body. The wagon and horses
wan eororod with blood rained by the firestorm.
The Oheyennes dressed Carter’s wounds aa well
aa they eould, and took him to Laramie, twenty
miles dtotaat, when tha balls were extracted, all
bat ooa whiec ooold not be reached. Carter is
raoldly recovering, but baa gone home to hia

in the employ of the government as a sooot. He

Tba writer cl this artiste was for twanty-fis*
years a Sea Island not too piaster on theeoaat
of Georgia, and during test yean of that period,
also raised tbo short staple in county.
Both localities are noted aa tha home of tba pes
tiferous Insect, which, like tbo besom of do.
st ruction, sweep* over the fertile fields of the
sgrionltorist, selecting for it* prey those that
are most promising aad luxuriant. Ha pro-
poses to give his experience as to tbo habits
and operations of ibis much dreaded aoourge.
Tbo theory, that extremely oold winten will
daatroy tbe larvae of ths caterpillar, and ensure
Immunity from Its ravages tbe ensuing season
baa been effectually exploded by tbe range of
tbe thermometer during tbe past two yean.
Tbe odd during that period baa been excep
tionally severe, and no pratraoted, that soaroe
■embtenea of spring ooold be diaoerned, ram
mar aad its torrid suns rapidly thawing the
throne of tbe loe King, and arraying all Nature,
with tbe magic of Aladdin's lamp, in its bravery
of green. Yet even now, before the earth baa
been thoroughly warmed by tba rays of tba King
of Day, and while tbe inohoate ootton crop is
in its infancy, and not a bloaeom, and hardly a
“square” greets tbe vision of tbe planter, from
tbe everglades of Florida almost to tbenorthara
limit of tbe “Black Belt,” oomea tbe ary, tbe
caterpillar is upon us in thousands, and an
ebbing np,” preparatory to. tbe final on
slaught.
Now we know of no effectual check to this
dire invader, save one somewhat similar to that
whioh saved Rome from her foreign foes. And
even this oan be used only in small fields and
limited areas. We allude to tbe use of turkeys
(not geese) as on agent of destruction to the
worm. A drove of ono hundred turkeys onoe
effectually proteoted a ootton field of twenty-
five acres in Bryan county, Georgia. The vora
cious bipeds, ia tbe wont of caterpillar visita
tions, kept np a oonstant march over the
grounds, shaking from tbe boughs and gobbling
up tbe nauseous vermin. Tbe result was
magnificent show of herbage, and an abundant
yield of tbe fleecy staple, where all (be sur
rounding plantations ware black and desolate
from its depredations. Bat of coarse this
remedy osnnot be expected to apply under the
new rod'eal regime, whioh makes a native born
tnrkey almost aa rare an objeot at ono of Bsr-
antn'a ostriches. Tennessee even contributes
our thanksgiving and ohriatmas offering of this
delicious blid.
But here oomea tbe comfort, or at least the
hope, whioh tbe writer would extend to his agri
cultural readers.
It is a well authenticated fact, corroborated
by tbe uniform experlenoe of ootton planters,
that in any given season, after the eaterpillar
makes its appearanoe, webs np, oomea ont
again, partially strips tbe fields, renews its
hatching operations, and finally makes a clean
sweep of leaves, blossoms, tender fruit, eta,
even scarifying and mat luting the harder bolls,
that tha insatiate wretches vanish from tbe
scene, and are beheld no more tbit year.
In Liberty oonnty, the writer baa observed
the ruts of tbe highways eo filled with multi
tudes of the inseet, who haring completed
their work, were migrating to other parts, that
they caked Hie mud upon the wheels of the
nomerona vehiolea whioh crushed them to
atoms. But onoe haring thna abandoned the
fields, we have never known them to return
the asms season. Now every farmer will tes
tify, that each year after his crop has been
eaten np, a most luxuriant teeond growth pate
forth, ot foliage and fruit, which, but for tbe
nipping froata of Antumn would fully repair
tbe ravages of tbe army worm. Tbe faot that
hitherto the visits of tbe eaterpillars bave
been et so late o period that it' •» ■***-
possible for the seoond orop to mature, (and
indeed its appearanoe bat retarded tbe opening
of tbe surviving old frail,) has imparted no
significance whatever to this renewed effort of
the plant to reprodnoe that which had been
deatroyed.
Bat at this early stage of tho season if tbe
eaterpillar performs Its nsnal work in a few
weeks, tbe ootton weed will have ample time to
repair damages, at It ait to some extent, before
tbe winter sets in. We have known fields, riddled
and almost denuded of limbs in June by severe
bail storms, and pronounoed utterly ruined,
take a. new start and prodaoe abundant crops.
So also one of the most prolifio yields of ootton
ever witnessed by the writer, was from ootton
not a seed of which (pronted until after tbe 21ii
of Hay. It is tree that tbe present season may
prove an exception to ail that bave preoeded it,
and tbe oaterpillar coming so extraordinarily
aariy, mty go on increasing, multiplying and
reprodnoing itself even to the latest day of Au
tumn ; bnt still there is room to hope that old
precedents will continue to obtain, and that,
baring aooomplished their errandof destruction
at the outset, they will retire to return no more.
At all events lot our farmers ooctinue to oolti-
vate their fields industriously and pnt their
irnat in Providence. Who knows that tbe ex
tremely early visit of the inseet may not prove
blessing in disguise 7
Let them remember too, that fair crops of
com can be reared to a very late period in tbe
season. Tbe writer onoe gathered ten bushels
per aore from a field planted on the £ A of July,
beside a large pee crop.
To sum np tbe whole matter, should tbe cater
pillar destroy your ootton, plant peas, potato
vines, corn for bread and forage, millet and tur
nip*, and everything indeed that will foed man
and beast Especially abonld attention be given
to onring onr native grasses, the crab and crow
foot, which, ent when in flower are little if any
inferior to the beat northern hay. Don't Bulk,
but remember that tbe greet God overrules all
for good, and qnlt yourselres like men to tbe
bitter end.
The ETerlaatlnK “Nigger” Again.
It iaannonnoed in tbe Baltimore Son, of Sat
urday, that an Annapolis telegram to Secretary
Robeson states “that Midshipman Young, of
Mississippi; Butterfield, of Kansas; Lockett, of

daintily partook of Owens' numerous dishes.
Suddenly this superb creature diaappearedfrom

Whereupon, with a promptness characteristic

and her jewels, waved her fair hand haughtily,
and “got up and got." She proceeded to the
Union Faeeeuger Depot, where she calmly
awaited the arrival of the West Point train.
Then, instead of taking some other train out

Tbe following aooount of tbe wreck of the
British bark Monarch last Saturday week off
Cumberland Island, with the loss of nine per
sons, including theoaptain and his wife, is found
in the last Brunswick Appeal:
The bark Monarch, 924 tons burthen, was re
cently loaded at Djboy with timber, by Epping,
Bellas A Go., and waa bound for Newcastle,
England. Oa Sa’nrday last, CapL James Glubb,
of tbe etram tng Sonde*, of this poit, spoke ber
off St. Simona’ Islard, about thirteen miles
from the light for the purpose of offering hia
servioea to tow her into this port,.if an oh waa
her destination, and parted with her in appa
rently good oondition. A strong easterly wind
prevailed daring Saturday night, oauaiog a very
heavy sea acd driving tbe bark towards tbe
ooaat. Every effort possible was made by cap.
tain and crew to keep her off, bnt the bark being
unmanageable, in oonaequenoe of having been
improperly loaded, and all human effort* were
unavailing. She was irresistibly borne by wind
and waves, despite the gallant exertions of offi
cers and crew, towards St Andrews* Bar.. Our
informant states that she waa too heavily loaded
forward, drawing tbere.eigbteen and a half feet
against. sixteen and a half feet aft, and that,
consequently, aho oonld not wear, stay or taek.
With hia noble bark in this unmanageable oon
dition, the captain found himself rapidly ap-
proaoblng the breakers off St. Andrews' Bar.
He o&Bt his anchor as a last and desperate
resort, but the puny arm of man and all
his ingenious contrivances for anch emer
gencies were powerless to contend against
tha wild and wrathful elements of nature; tbe
die was cast; the flit hid gone forth and the
noble bark waa cast upon the north breakers of
St. Andrew’s Bar, eight miles from the light,
with her small boats tbe only earthly hope of
tbe seveutten souls aboard her, and, apparent
ly, the only barrier between them and an eter
nity, yawning to receive them into lta always
filling and always equally capacious bosom.
Two small boats were now launobed, and into
one of them tbe oaptain and bis wife repaired,
while the first mate and a portion of the orew
took tbo other, the balance of the orew remain
ing in the ship. However high hope of being
rescued may now bavo risen in tbe hearts of
that sturdy marriner and hia delioate wife, it
only rose to meet sad and terrible disappoint
ment. Tbe nemesis of tbe Btorm bad not yet
wreaked her vengeance andouly human life oonld
satiate the wrath. A sudden larch of tbo bark
capsized the boat, throwing tbe .lady ont and
drowning her, while tbs captain dong to the

portals of an unknown eternity alone when In

winds and raging sea he choee a watery grave
with bis faitbfal wife. A third boat was
lannobed and filled with another portion
of the orew, and another lurch of the
vessel caps'z id this aod the boat launobed
with that of tbe captain, drowning all in them.
Tbe list of drowned embraoed Oaptain Thomas
aud wife, Morris Jones, first mate, Wm. Peters,
carpenter, Owen Winn Strickland, boy, Alex.
Williams, and Geo. Smith, seamen, and two
other seamen, names unknown. Tbe seoond
mate and seven seamen who remained aboard
tbe ill-fated vessel were taken from ber and
brought to this city on Tuesday last, by Gant.

Glubb aua me out vtvlog mate agreed that the
former should attempt to pull the vessel off
with the tog Bonder aod in ths event be failed
to do so be should wreok her. Tbe effort to
pull the vessel off with the tug failed and Oapt.
Oiubb proceeded to wreck ber. Tbe proverbial
wiokedneaa ot sailors was in this instanoe veri
fied, aa those who remained aboard the vessel
pillaged tbe cabin and pilfered even tbe wear
ing apparel of tbe unfortunate iady. It is said,
and we think it probable, that Captain Thomas
took his log book and valuables, consisting of
two thousand dollars in gold, several gold
watches and a quantity of jewelry, into the
small boat with him and they were lost when tbe
boat wae capsized. None of the bodies cf tbe
drowned have yet been recovered, bat tbe bead
of one of the seamen, severed from the body,
fixated ashore on Wednesday. We are inform
ed tbat sharks are very numerous about the
Btranded vessel and they, doubtless, have held
high revelry in the deep recesses of tbe sea,
over their ghostly banquet. Captain Glubb,
with the tug Sonder, has brought to this dty
the sails, hawsers, pomp, bell, and other ar
ticles of tbe vessel’s furniture, and baa pro
ceeded to nnlocd ber deck. Uoloading tbe
deck will lighten tbe vessel five or six inohes,
and Captain Glubb thinks lie may then possibly
pull ber off on tbe next spring tide, whioh will
occur next Wednesday, unless prevented by
stress of weather, or tbe vessel bas reoeived
more serious injuries than is now anticipated.
Tbe vessel is cow full of water and H is, con
sequently, impossible to asoertain the full
amount of injury sustained. Tbe cargo will cer
tainly be saved if tbe vessel does not go to
pieces in a very Bhort time.

Messrs. Boddy and Soheira took np three-

On the morning of November 29th Oaptain

Daring the forenoon of the same day Boddy
and Soheira were murdered by Hooker Jim and
hia associates, while they were ontting wood and
herding sheep, within a mile of their house and
utterly unooneoiona of the danger.
The agent of the Yainox reservation had
promised the settlers that any offensive move
ment against the Indiana should be made known
to the whites in time to afford them an oppor
tunity to obtain a safe refnge; bnt the messen
ger sent by tbe agent failed to perform hia doty

arrival of Buddy's team without a driver and
blood upon tbe wagon was the first intimation
of the terrible tragedy the poor women reoeived.
Before npon they found the bodies of tbe mur

At different points within a few miles of tbe
house they also met the Hodocs, Hooker Jim,
Long Jim, Guriy Headed Doctor, One Eyed

massacre. J
While the Indians went to the house to find
other male viottms these women escaped and

completely exhausted ooudttioo.
Gen. Davis reoeived ths women kindly—

the Indiana were all Hot Creeks except Little
John, and that there were no charges against
them. Fairchild undertook to push on to
Boyle’s Camp, end thevohmteers retired to their
camp, near Growly’a. On the road Fairohild no-
tioed two men ahead, riding to Rocky Point, as
if to intercept him. When the team approached
the two men one of them presented a needle
gun at Fairchild, saying, “Get down, you old
white-headed .*’ “By what authority?”
Fairchild. “By mine; I am going to kill
the Indiana and you too,” was tbe reply. The
leader oaught hold of the males and unhitched
them, catting the harness. Fairchild clinging
to the lines, leaped to the ground. The poor
wretobes implored for mercy and begged Fair-
ehildto save them. The warriors were un

were the eoolest in the party, although facing
Inevitable death; but the women and children
shrieked, groaned and wept piteously.
Fairohild had nothing but a small pistol and
six inches from his ear was the muzzle of a
needle gun.- He says tear* came in his eyes
and he mingled his entreaties with those of the
Modoos, in hopes the maasaere might be
avoided. He adds: “It waa a terrible soene—
one that I never (hall forget. I shudder when
I think of what I saw and beard. The tearful
voices of those women and children (till ring in
my ears; but tho oowardly hounds were not to
be balked. A shot, and little John lay dead in
the wagon, with a bullet in his brain.’
The moles dashed away with Fairohild, who
beoame entangled in the lines. More shots
were fired, by vhieh Teehe Jack, Pony, and
Mooeh were kilted, and Little John's squaw
(rightfully wounded in the shoulder.
Away ahead on the road in the dlreotlon of
Boyle’s Camp, a dead of dost waa seen, indi
cating the approach of a team. Ths murder
ers espied the duet aad shortly afterward were
riding rapidly away.
Sergeant Murphy, of battery B, Fourth Ar

to the soene. The sergeant took oharge of af
fairs and remained with his men on the
grounds. Fairohild, a teamster, and the
wounded squaw, with ber two children, oame in
at 2 o'clock this morning.
It ia generally supposed that the guilty par
ties were Oregon volunteers. Fairohild is of
that opinion lumaeif.
The warrior* killed were not oharged with
murder. Those who knew them beat eay they
have only participated in open fight. Every
one here oondemns the affair as atrooioos and
without exouse.
There is no doubt bnt that the murder was
earried out upon a carefully arranged plan, aa
Fairohild notioed horsemen on the road ahead
and behind him when the shots were fired.
Had John Fairohild, instead of James, been
present another murder might have been added
to the list, as the Oregonians are bitter in their
hatred to John, the old man, and other Califor
nians.
The Warm Spring Indians have only a few
weeks longer to serve. Sergeant Clinton is
