Notwithstanding *11 apprehension* lo tha
ooatrarj J«t(< rd.y wa. u fins a day *a oould
bare been for the opening of the Fair of the
llibb County Agricultural Hoololy. Tho day
was warm, but perfectly clear, and a pleasant
breese prevented the beat being oppressive.
The Park era* In the finest possible condi
tion. Everything was aa freah aa if U bad just
left the hand of nature ; the walks and diivas
were aa clean as labor oonld make them; and
the fonnlalna were all leaping and danoiog a*
If they were glad to weloome the people.
Tho morning found comparatively few goods
on exhibition In Ploral hall; but from early in
the day nnlii almost night goods condoned to
oomo in until the display, in many departments,
vaa finer than oonld have been anticipated.
Cp to two o'clock In the afternoon the crowd
In attendance was comparatively small, bnt
after that bonr thb street oars began to go down
folly loaded, and people also began to oomo in
in vehicles of all kind*, and by five o'clock the
crowd wss large.
Tint axroiTiox
was, in moat reepeots, entirely setiafeotory.
Home of the departments were not foil, bnt
othrra went so far beyond the expectations of
every one as to compensate for what wss lack-
tag elsewhere. Especially was thla tba case in
Tnx B0STXCCI.TU1UX. csrkSTitxirr,
where everything was so fine aa to challenge
the world to prodnee Its equal. No such a col
lection of vegetables was ever before seen in
Georgia, or hardly in the country. Everything
area of prodigious airs and In the greatcet abun
dance, and of the finest quality. There were
beets ou exhlbtlon that measured ten inohea in
diameter, and Irlah potatoes large past all pre
cedent, and huge cabbages that aeem to have
grown for the purpose of sbedlng the gronnd
rather than for folks to eat. Bnt In everything
in the vegetable line the show was a oomplet*
and grand uncos**.
As nona of the lablea bore the names of tho
exhibitors, It la difficult to nemo any or those
who had fine displays; bnt wo were ablo to as
certain s few, which we take pleasure in no-
Uaiaf.
Mr. H. L Gualln exhibited seventy varieties
of vegetables, embracing every known kind al
most, and nearly every variety. He showed
some radishes that were perfect mastodons, and
it required seme persuasion to oonvinoe the
people that they were radishes. However,
everything on tha table was remaikably fine,
and claimed a dee share of attention. -
Mr. Patrick Long bad a splendid display,
nil cabbage and tomatoes wore the fluost on
exhibition, while of other things be had an ex
cellent variety, all of splendid size and quality.
The next table was ooonpled by Mr. O. O'Con
nett, and It was a magnificent one. His Irish
potatoes ware oonaldered the finest on exhibi
tion, and certainly no finer speoimens of thia
vegetable oonld be grown. He exhibited tho
early roao and tha peerless, and It wss difficult
to decide whloh was the handsomoat of the two
varieties. Hla beets, however, were tho speolsl
wonder of all observers. Bet hla enliro display
wss capital in nvery particular.
Mr. Ed. Long also hid a fine show from bis
fine market garden. Uls oabbsges wero olose
rivals of bis oonaln's, monlioned above, while
in alt other articles in this line he was very ex
oallent. Taken ss a whale, it was a matter of
tome difficulty to decide npon tho comparative
merits of these tallies.
Mrs. Ool. Thai. Hardeman sent down a great
variety of vegetables from her kltohen garden,
and thoegh eho was not competing for a pre
mium, she got ono, and wonld have gotten
more if she had exhibited her vegetables In
larger quantities.
There were many other display] of groat cxool-
lenoe and beanty, bnt wo were nnable lo aaoor-
tain the owners of them all. It is sufficient to

of their ootlon press and a grist mill, all good
machinery.
Mr. A. Reynolds exhibited a great number of
brass oaitlnga, selected at random from hi*
shop, and with no special view to the exposi
tion. He made no brasses especially for the

about a locomotive. He also exhibited a ear
box patented by Mr. Matt. Thornton, of this
olty, some years ago.
Mr. K. Rowe had one of Brlnley'a shaft plows
on axhibltion.

acme aa any vehicles ever brought to Macon,
ami j-oiaibly far better than those nude in the
North.
Mr. P. 0. Saw;or exhibits one of his new
patent gins and one of O. E. Massey's Excelsior,
and two of Pratt's gins are also on exhibition.
The Bernd Brothers make one of the most
attractive of all the displays. They have that
celebrated horse of theirs down there rigged out
in a superb gold mounted harness, and besides
this have on exhibition a number of saddles,
bridles, harness, and other goods in their line.

The display of flowers was a most satisfactory
one. Messrs. Wrigtey and Arrant* exhibit an
almost endleaa variety of beautiful plants, for
exhibition and sale, Including many that are
rare and beautiful. Tbelr hanging baaket
was surpassingly elegant; aa also was a floral
eheudeiUr that hangi over the center of their
area. *
Among tha out flower* were some elegant
oolleetioca. Naxt to the entranoe la an im
mense mound of flowen, emhreeing innumera
ble varieties, arranged with the greeteet taste.
Other collections on the same table are beauti
ful. Miss Balkley possibly aeods the rarest eob
lection. 8b* also aeods a basket of varbeoaa.
There la a tray of dahlias, another of rose* and
another of pinks, whloh evidently same from
the same sonroe—all of which are of the finest
character. But in the absence of the names of
the exhibitors, it is hard to designate tha many
bean lieu In this collection of flowers. This
part of the exhibition, a* far as it goes, is as
beautiful as nature oould afford, even when
assisted by the excellent taste of Maoon ladle*.
The number of paintings, drawings, photo
graph*. etc., on exhibition la very creditable.
Wa were nnable to aseertain tha names of any
of the artists.
There is quite a number of various styles of
patch-work qullta, afghans, ottomans, cushions,
etc , on exhibition; also, some very handsome
specimens of needio work.
There ware some samples of needle work done
by tha young ladies of tha Blind Asylum, whloh
ware moat remarkable examplea of tba akill
that may be acquired by these unfortunate young
people.
Th-ro ware also on exhibition some needle
woikt, done by Mltaea Lizzie and Clementina
Ozurda, of Breslau, Prussia, whloh were viewed
with very great interest.
Mr. Balkley exhibits a diploma obtained by
bis father, for tha best mlleh eow, at a New
England Fair, in 1822—ibowing the diploma to
be more than fifty years old.
Messrs. J. H. Z.ilin A Go. make a very hand
some display of faney articles, perfumery, etc.,
from their drug store over the way.
Oar near neighbors, Messrs. Hunt, Rankin A
Lamar, also make a beautiful exhibition in thia
line. These gentlemen show also a Urge num
ber of thrifty stalks of ootlon, that had been
propagated with the aid of their Home-made
Fertilizer.
Mr. R. B. Hall exhibits a page from his pre
scription book. Thia lnoludes prescription*

applianoes of the apothecary. It is rather a
| novel display.

Indeed. The summer, pleasant and enjoyable as
it is, is very apt to lay u* open to thia kind of dep.
rodation. The high temperature weakens the
body and impairs its vitality, and as the strength
snd energy of the system decline, disease following
in tho trail of dubility, obtains a foothold some-
where in the frame, in the stomach, perhaps, or the
liver, or tha head, or tha bowels, or the nerves. In
summer, therefore, it is of great importance lo
keep the body strong, and ill its functions in heal-
thy activity. To promote, or rather to insure this
condition of the human machine, Ho.tetter’s Stom-
ach Ritter., the standard tonic of the age, is tha
on. thing needful. As a wholesome inrigorant it
stand, at tha head of all medicines of the dare to
which it belong.. But this i. only one of It* many

appellation, a universal medicine. It la so harm-
lea. that the moat jlelioate female invalid may taka
it with safety, yet so powerful that no form of bil
lon. or nervous disease, no phue of indigestion,
no case of ohronis constipation, no type of intar.
mlttant fever, can resist it* sanitary operation.
UtmaiEEX.—Wbil* other articles of their kind
are largoly adulterated. Dr. Files's Oreaxn Baking
Fowdsr and Special Flavorings, vanilla, lemon,
nectarine, etc, hold their nnebaken position in the
estimation of thousands as the purest, best, most
reliable and cheapest. In all parlitu'ara that con-
atitute perfect results they cannot be approached
by tba various known baking powders and flavoring
extrseta made in imitation. One trial will satisfy
that for purity and strength Dr. rrioa’s are alone
in the market.
