Tbs 8h*h of Persia, on bis trip through
Europe, hzi arrived in England, where he has
also been received with (ho most distinguished
boners. Toor Sfcsh ! how weary he most hare
grown by this time of gala receptions, of oourt
dinners and military reviews! In England, at
least, bis entertainment differed from the cus
tomary military displays on tbo continent
There was a grand naral review in honor of
the Kbab, who eeemed to follow tbo evoiolions
of tbe Heel with great attention. It oonsiated
of flftyfoor vessels, comprising some of the
largest iron clads, and was well calculated to
impress Hla Oriental Majesty with the man
time power of England. In Bt Petersburg and
Berlin the official programme for the reception
of the Bbah mainly comprised military reviews
and gala banquets. In the latter city Naaar-ed
Din showed little interest for the brilliant mil
itary spectacle before bim. Mounted upon a
superb Arabian oharger, whose to* was dyed
earminlan red, ba slowly rode dovSn the racks
with an apparent look of apathy and indiffer
ence, and, tbe review being over, returned at
onee to bh quarters.
In St. Petersburg the festivities closed by a
sumptuous banquet, at which the Shah had his
glass filled with sugar water, as the Koran pro
hibits the use of wine. To the toast of tbe
Czar be responded in French: “I drink tbe
health of ifta Majesty, the Emperor of Russia.
Beforo bis departure be presented the heir ap
parent with a pure-bloodad Arabian bone, val-
oad at twenty thousand roubles, and conferred
tbe order of tbe Bun upon the Grand Duchess.
Tbe suite of the Shah consists of thirteen Peers
of the Empire, there being among them teveral
members of hla family, besides a numerous
routine of personal attendants.
Nasar-ed Din was born in 1830 and baa been
on tbs throne of Penis since October 13, 1818.
His early education was mneb negjeoted, bnt
since bis sueeraslon to supreme power be has
earnestly applied himself to store his mind with
naefol knowledge to fit him for tbe place of a
King. Tbe jonrney be la undertaking In “Fran-
etstan" now, baa been planned ever since 18f0.
Naaar td-Din ta of medium bight, rather tbin
than full. Bit face has a pleasing oral shape,
with dark brown eyea, shaded by wnll-arched
eye brows grown together, and heavy mns-
taohea. lie speaks in a very quick and abrupt
manner, peon liar to his raoe, bnt knows bow to
say something obliging to everybody. From
London Naaar-ed Din will proceed to Paris.
Aooording fa dispatches received in SL Pe
tersburg tbe Russians bad two eneoanters with
the Kbtvsns, who attempted 'to check the pro-
greaa of tbo invaders. The former were both
limes defeated and retreated towards ths capi
tal. Referring to this expedition, the effijial
Government Gazette publishes the following
srtloie: Foreign papers which no long and
mostly without reason, have complained of tbe
interference of ltnaaia with Central Asia affairs,
are beginning to look better upon these rela
tions, to jadge, at least, from (be articles which
have appeared on the occasion of tbe journey of
the Bbab. Ilia visit to Russia, where the most
powerful ruler or one of the oldost Asiatic
Btatos baa met with such a hearty reception,
oannot remain withont influence on political
affairs, as It strengthens the peace established
already for a long time between the two neigh
boring Buttes. It has been the Iotof Russia to be
tbe tint to make tbe Bbah acquainted with the
advantages of European civilization. This
' lofty obligation Russia baa long reooguized and
adopted to her political past. Even her moat
inveterate Western enemies and detractors
most admit that upon bet baa devolved tbe
great and lofty taik of being tbe bearer of civ
ilization iu Asia.
L-icgfeilow and W. Collon Bryant have been
nominated members of the Russian Academy
of Helen ecu. These are the first American? npon
whom this honor has been bestowed.
•'L' Union," tbo famous French nltramon
tane paper, haa published a report from Berlin,
listing that tbe Emperor William is unfit to re
mntn any longer at tho bead of the Btnte, and
that the Crown Frtrce Frederick William will
toon be proclaimed Regent
Tbo French National Assembly was much ex
cited over an application of General Ladmiranlt,
the military Governor of Paris, for anthority
to proaeoQte M. Kane, tbo member for
Lyons, far bis connection with tho Com-
mnne. Tbe special committee appointed to
oonatder the application, enmmonod Monaienr
llano to appear before it; bnt tbe deputy, stand
log on bis privilege as a member, refused to cam.
ply end denied (be right of tbe committee to
require bis pretence. After soveral sittings a
report wee adopted by a vote of fonrteen to ooc,
recommending that authorization for the arrest
and trial of depnty Kano be granted by the As
sembly. Iu tbe Chamber the report of the oom
miltco occasioned a great commotion. Largo
crowds, anticipating an exciting debate, crowd
ed tho floor and galleries of tho House at an
early hour. A largo number of deputies made
speeches for and egainat the proposition, nntii
a member of the Left offered a resolution, di
recting an inqnir/ into tbo ebarges against
Hons. Rane beforo amborlty for bis prosecu
tion be given. This resolution having been de
feated by a vote of ISO to 200, tho roport of the
oommlttce of tho Aaaombly, granting General
Lsdmiranlt anthority to proaccnto Mona Ranc,
was adapted by a vote of 183 against 187.
Ezecntions have been leaned against Gnsiave
Oonrbot, the well-known Paris printer, who woe
inatrnmontal in tbo overthrow of tho Yendomo
coinmn. The eonrte bero decided that be la
liable for damages, and tbe amonnts obtained
by tbo judgment will be expended toward pay
ing for tbo reconstruction of tbe oolnmn.
Tbe Prinoa of Joinvilto thus expressed him
self rcoontly ou tbe occasion of a distribution
of prizes in Lsngres: "Yesterday our main
support was Tbtors, whoso merits will never be
forgotten. To day it ta tn thoTctorest of public
order to nphold tho knightly wonnded of Sedan,
whose conrago and loyalty inspire ns all with the
same confidence.”
Prince Napoleon has asked for and obtained
a passport from tbo French Consul in Milan,
with ths oonsent of ths French Government.
It will be remembered that Thiers peremptorily
expelled him from Fiance.
Spain continues in hopeless anarchy. Scaroely
has tbo Federal Itepnblio been established when
tbe conservatives in tbo Cortes are seeking to
revive tbo project for tbo establishment of a
1'ultarian republic, with Marshal Serrano as
President.
The Minister of Financo introduced a bill
granting tbe government special powers for tbe
ooileotion of taxes, and providing for economi
cal terms In all departments of the adminiatra-
tration. Tbs law granting pensions to former
members of tbe Cabinet will be, probably, re
pealed. Tbe draft of a diplomatic vote. Inform
ing tbe Foreign Powers of the establishment of
the Federal Kepnblic, was read at the Council
of Ministers by Benor Mczio.
The Oarlist warfare it. dragging on. The too-
well known Care of Santa Crox burned the rail-

cars ut Remain. I

prohibiting tho creation of new titlfea of nobility

—
Letter from Cnthbert—Andrew Col
lege Commeneemeit.
CcTHaaar, June 23, 2873.
Kdtiort Telegraph and Jfcttenger: After |
several days of severe examination last week
—tbe moat gratifying to the friends and
patrons cf the College, we heard last Sunday
a sermon that by tbe occasional flights and
production of tbe silver tones of earlier life,
remindod many of the andicnoe of a quarter of
a century or more ago, of tba triumphs of pulpit
eloquence by Dr. Means. He was in feeble
health, bnt his theme inspired and partially re
juvenated him. It was the enlightening icfln-
enoe and power of (he Bible over mind. Uuder
the assaults of hla withering criticism, and his
eloquent defense of lhe scriptural theory of
man—the systems of philosophy at war with it
had no quarter spared to them and were made
to look small and uninviting. |
A very large and sprightly class came on the
stage Monday to oompete for tbe Sophomore
pr zee. Tbe contest waa a spirited one, and
evidenced on the part of a large camber of
the claim pow6rand attainments so nearly equal,
that outsiders conld form no oonoeption as to
who would triomph with the committee.
The junior etnas ia one of the finest ever pre
sented to the pnblio in the college. Tbia state
mi-nt ia folly borne ont by their elimination
last week and their exhibition on Tnesdsy.
After which President John II. Beals of the
mile high school, addressed the Sophomores of
yesterday. Hla speech, the first onr people
bare beard from bim, was not only well re
ceived, intensely enjoyed, and applauded to the
echo, bnt afforded great satisfaction to tbe
friends and patrons of education, (hat while wa
bare first class ednoator we bare also a fine and
popular orator in President Seals.
To Mary Warren, of Georgetown, daughter
of Lotber Warren, deceased, was awarded tbe
first, and to Ella Lon Chastain, of Cnthbert,
tbe second. There were at least a dozen more
in tbe class who ooght to bars bad prizes—
there were ths Mieses Williams, of Stewart;
McKeely, of Florida; Miss Raines, of Stewart;
Gormley, Spinks, Harvey and Domingos, of
Cnthbert; Jernegan, of Fort Gaines; Vinoent,
of Quitman; and Mieses Lawson and Mullens.
On Tuesday night Col. 0. T. Goode, upon
tbe invitalion of Andrew and Taylor sociolies,
wav presented to a splendid audience. His es
tablished reputation as a speaker ■precludes tbe
necessity for any notice here cf bis address
The Senior class, who were before ns yester
day, is eemposed of Misses Ward and Humber,
of Stewart; Davis, of Houston; Leonard, of
Dawson, of Macon; Hillman, of Glenn-
Vlllei Ala.; Tackett. McAfee, Dake, MeGebee
and McHsn, of Randolph, and ia said to com
pare to advantage with any class the oollego
las ever turned out. Their exhibition yester
day strengthened tbe opinion of tho36 who have
witnessed their examinations of a high grade of
ictellectnality, scholarship and general culti
vation. Tbe first honor was giveD, undivided,
to Miss Jane, danghler of John A. B. Ward;
tbe second to Misses Davis, Tackett, Humber.
It was announced from tho Board of Trus
tees that President McGehee bad resigned, and
