OITY AFFAIRS.
THURSDAY MORNING, JULY 8, 1873.
Fin.—Thera an alarm of fir© given yes
terday afternoon, oaneed by the roof of Mr. H
A. Porter's kitchen taking t\to. The firemen
rnahed to their posts promptly, bnt fortunately
their services were not needed, as the fire was
extinguished by buckets, before It had done
other damage than the burning of a bole through
the roof
Not Tam.—It has been rumored on our
atreeta that the enterprising firm of Guilford,
Wood A Go. had decided to move their large
stock of music and musical instruments to tb*»r
•tore in Atlanta, but they inform o< thet this
Is without any foundation, as they have already
hare eatahlishod the largest music business in
tho Htate, and shall never leave Hawn until
Estey fails to make the beet organ and Cbicker-
ing the best piano in the world.
The Macon and 1MVR Uailkoad.—By
reference to a proclamation which appears else
where, it will be seen that the Macon and Brans-
wick nulroed, baring failed to pay its July in
terest, which was doe on the first instant, the
Oovertibr has taken possession of the road, and
appointed Mr. George EL liszlehurst receiver.
The road will run on as it has been running
heretofore, and we think the people will find,
ore long, that its condition will be better than
it ever has been.
However, wc will have mere to say of this
hereafter.
The Lecture I^ast Nioht.—Those who were
absent from the Second Baptist Church last
night missed a great treat. The splendid leo-
turo of Dr. Atkinson, in the interest of the
Good Templars, was the theme of universal
praise. The Doctor spoke for about one hour,
and from the beginning to the end of his great
lecture the large audienoe was greatly interested
and delighted. The Doctor is one of the fincet
•pokers in Georgia, and success crowns his
efforts wherever he goes.
To night he »q>©ak* in Uie First Btroet Meth
odist Church, when the publio msy expect to
hear a splendid address. Let all go who can.
The Buriat, nr Tuvaes—Eir j«1mP.
has just presented to the Macon Volunteers a
hands oroe sieeleogr* vieg—The Burial of La Lane
—all properly framed and ready to be Lung
upon tho walls of the armory. Tbo picture is a
very handsome one, and will be a most appro
priate dceoiaticn for the armory.
In this oonceotion we take oooasion to slate
that the Volunteers will bo happy to receive
similar contributions from oihera of their
fnendr. They want to have their armory re
stored, if possible, to all its former beauty and
elegance, at least by October, when there will
be a number of military companies horo from
other portions of the State.

The feeler Day.
The very Interesting public examines con
nected with the annual eommeneemaat of Mar-
oer University, were brought to a very happy
termination yesterday by the brilliant exercises
of the commencement proper. This Is always
regarded as the grandest day of the whole four
deys, tboQgb in lh*a ease all the elaseea have
done eo admirably that It would be a matter of
•005 difficulty to determine which day was most
brilliant.
The faculty and trustees of tha Uuivsraity.
the invited guests, the graduating class, and the
students met yesterday marring, on Seoond
Atreet, in front of the First Baptist Church, and
forming in prooesaion marched around to Ral
ston Hall, where a large audience of ladies and
gentlemen had already assembled. With the
exception of the students, the entire prooes-
•ion passed through to the stage, and ware
seated thereupon, forming such s gelary of
learning and intelligeooe as had rarely, if ever,
been seen in that ball before.
The exercises were opened with a fervent and
eloquent prayer by Dr. Tichenor, ef Alabama.
The first speaker was Mr. Wylie W. Arnold,
of Wilkes eounty, Ga., who delivered the Latin
aalntatory in a manner that was very musical,
if not entirely intelligible to th« eadianoe.
He was followed by Mr. Walter M. Jackton,
of this city, in a most beaotiful speech, having
“Cypress or Laurel** for his subjsot. The bur
then of his disoourje was “Victory or Death,**
and he applied it to genius, in all the various
fields which are open to its explorations. We
thick the balance of Mr. Jackson's class will
ooincido with os when we say he is (he best
speaker smong them all.
“Sit lax”—let there be light—was the subject
of the address of Mr. Albert J. Harvey, of
Mtrion county. It was well delivered, and
showed that Ibo young orator had begun to see
that light and to walk therein.
Mr. John S. Freeman, of Coweta county, fol
lowed In an excellent delineation on the “Po wer
of Science.” The address was carefully pro
pared; bnt Mr. Freeman's enunciation Is not
so distinct as it ahoald be. He should cultivate
mors deliberation in his utterance and become
a apv&ker. II* tWoka •loAttjr, *na brings
out bis points as well as the best of bis class.
Mr. Marshall Z. Andrews selected for his
theme “The Doom of the Red Man/' and (raced
the destiny of the aborigines from the Atlantio
westward to the setting sun, and almost to their
extinction. The theme may be made ona
pathetic eloquence in the hands of ono who
feels a sympathy for that wonderful and worth
less race of peoplo.
1 he next speaker was Mr. Benjamin S. Fitz
patrisk, of Twiggs county. The subject was
not one (o awaken those sublime flights of olo-
quenoo in which orators and their hearers de
light ; bnt tho yonng orator brought oat all the
points of interest that could be gathered from
“International Exhibitions'* from an almost
abstract point of view.
Mr. Enoch Callaway, of Troup county,
lighted the audience with 44 The Old Paradox"
—Love. It was a spicy address, full of humor-
ous and pungent points and was well delivered.
This specoh was supplemented by “And What
Comes of It,'* by Mr. Jas. A. Jones, of Hancock
county. Of coarse, marriage was tho.topic, and
