Alexander living in Hanoock Chslera Phenomena. From the Nashville Union and A meric in.] The pestilenoe has suffiMectly abated in this city to enoonrage the oalm 6tndy of its most prominent features. A correspondent whose communication appears in this paper of the 2d Instant, over the signature qf “Anonymous,” states that in the summer of 1833, Shelbyville with a population of COO or 700, lost in a short time 115 by oholera. His words are: “On Friday night tha inhabitants retired to re§l in apparent good health, bat before daylight many were dead and dying!” “The town of Hanni bal, on the Mississippi, had a similar visitation.” If there have been no instances quite 90 sudden and appalling this year, tho experience of Greenville and other places distinguished for general healthfulness, proves that cholera poison d-ffers from all other diseases and malaria, In ita essential phenomena. Its manifestations in this State cannot be explained by any chemioa! action. Its primary germs have life like those of rust and mildew, blight on grapes, and are mainly carried from place* to place in the bodies of affected persons, often without their know ing that any seed cholora ia near them. There is abundant proof of its being carried across the Atlantic, and from place to place, on land, in the dothiog ai d soiled bedding of per sons who have died of cholera, or had the dis ease and recovered Drying the germs do not kill them, no mere thiu drying seed corn aid wheat destroys the vitality of these s-teds Where all the conditions ar j favorable, rust oa wheat mn'tiplies its germs or spornlles with amtsing raptdity. In Nashville, Shelbyville and other places, oholera germs have *hown a similar fecundity They are now spreading intheoountry. bo soon aa some of the essential conditions fail, the oholera abates as suddenly as it began. In 1817, when the cholera first attracted much attention in India, the Marquis of Hastings was moving slowly with an army through the low, unhealthy district of Bandelcusd. “A reiga of terror followed its appearance, and the army became temporarily demoralized. Toe epi- demio lasted only eight days, but during that time one thousand seven hundred and sixty.fonr soldiers, and eight thousand native followers died. The 6caden subsidence of the malady allowed the progress of the army, a..d its health became rapidly re-established.” Here was aa attack as sudden es one might ■appose from millions of locusts, rising oat of the ground in a locnst district, whose ravages In propagating their species lasted eight day.?, and ended their race. All the phenomena are vital—there is nothing chemical in the nature of a new canee. Cholera dost, l:ke that of a ripe, dry puff ball, mingles readily and largely with common dust m dry seasons in Hindustan, on the camping gronnd of pilgrims. According to Macpherson, pilgrims strew the road to Jag^ernant with their bones, and thickly seed the soil, whether wet or dry, with the germs of cholera In treating of the “distribution of cholera,” Dr. Peter makes the following state ment: “In 1854, one wing of a cavalry regt- ment just arrived from Eoglacd in high health, ascended tbe Ganges in boata; at a certain pe riod of the voyage it arrived at a part of the country where tbe cholera prevailed in the vil lages on the banks of the river, but with whioh they diAnot communioate. There oases cf the disease occurred m tbe boat*, ai.d the mou wt-re advUed to push oa rapidly. In a few days after, when they had passed the limits of the disease on the bank*, it ceased to ehow itself among the troops. “The other wing of the regiment followed some time afterwards by the asme mode of con veyance ; beoame affected with cholera at the same place, and lest it again at the same point” Cholera dn9t in the air and inhaled into the lnngs produced the disease above named, or cholera germs in the river water drank by sol diers in tbe infected district. To onr mind tbe case is clear that chemical action did not pro- daoe the malady. Satufled that this Asiatic plague hss a vital origin, and no other, it is important to learn how long the life in choirra germs will live in a dry state, like life in dry garden setdi Some seeds refuse to germinate if dned; onr common chescnt is a seed of that character. Bn: as vi tality in the reproductive cells of most cellular plants is not easily destroyed. altbon^U easily suspended aod made dormant, we infer that thia general law applies to cholera blight. With a full supply of cholera w»*»d, froth and genuine, on the Gomberland in 1833, wa see no necessity, (aa Dr Peters does) of going to pil grim c&mps on the banks of the Ganges fot any now or better i-eed. The better opiolon is that in forty years, or from 1833 to 1873, this Afiatio plague has become fully aochmated this continent. Daring the revolutionary war Hessian troops in the British service brought from their homes in Enrope in wheat straw the pupa of a small fly. called in Germany cecydomiadettructor, and “Hessian fly” in this country. Tms peat now covers the continent where wheat is raised with no new importation. In bringing horses from Europe, man brings the grub of bot*fl:es in them; and these iroeats trouble horses not less in the New than in the Old World. In the same way, all the parasites that attaoh themselves to man in any way to his injury are liable to be brooght to thl-t continent, either by the Chinese cc the West or Earopeans on the East. Immunity is not to be expeoted, with bnndreds cf thousands pas ling over all nations by steam in a few months, and everywhere scat tering broadcast the living germs cf pestilences Steam transportation on tand arid water c-tll. for progress in tbe application of science to the pnrifloation of cities, acd the fertii'Zition of the soil which feeds and clothes mankind, and sup ports all trade, commerce and >nanufacturea. Frcm the Ganges to the Mississippi, man, in ttie plenitude of folly and ignorance, roba the earth cf its s&tnral fruitfnlnes*, not from any law of nature, bat to have foul r»vera, sewers, water- closets and garden-bon-ies, in which to breed pestileace with little labor, both in town and country. There is really no limit to Washington scandal. Ju&t now are farther developments concerning the inauguration ball, whose dismal failure was fully ventilated, at the time of its occurrence. The hastily erected building was too roughly finished, the draughts were more numerous and far livelier than the company, the tons upon tons of game, hams, ices and sandwiches were undevoured, the wines were nncorked, the punch even was uatastsd, and the disconsolate dancers almost perished with cold, although sacrificing the proprieties of costume in favor of mantles and wrap3. Id brief, the loss was some forty thousand dollars. Saits were prompt ly instituted by caterers, cooks, confectioners, musicians acd attendants. The committee bad no funds, so individual members were held re sponsible. The contest has been particularly warm, all sorts of devices to recover and pre texts to evade payment being nsed. The debt ors tried assidaou«ly bat vainly to replenish the exoheqaer, by projeots of a fair, a grand prom enade oonoert, acd finally by a ball, uodf-r the auspices of the State Republican associations. But the campaign was concluded and the aaso ciations had been subjected to too severe a po litical bleeding to pay heed to such a paltry con tiDgent aa a ball. The District Legislature, however, have been equal to tbe emergecoy. The people would not come and dance, bnt they must pay the fiddler, nevertheless, by i tax of fifteen thousand dollars to meet the defi eiencies, and with thia the committee hope lay the ghosts of boned turkeys and the clamor of those who boned them. It was only appro priate action in anch an appropriating body. Thzt are still trying In the Southern country tn supplant Northern school bocks by works prepared by rebel writers, aod yet tbese mad men are oontinnally asking for Northern emi gration.—Philadelphia Prat. They have pretty nearly succeeded, too, and won’t stop “trying” until they do succeed. Northern emigrants don’t want their children taught the truth of history as these “rebel wri ters” have written it, let them bring their books with them when they come down this way. If they prefer to have their children believe a lie in stead of the truth, and to keep their minds poisoned and inflamed by tho sensational, one sided school books gotten np at the North, seems to us that they had better not emigrate. We are all glad to welcome settlers who come on business and to help ui ont of the mire, bnt if their coming depends upon our children being taught to call their fathers traitors, and to hate the principles and motives underlying the late struggle for Southern independence, their room is mnch better than their company. Nail Factomxs Sc pend—The Boston Adver User says the manufacturers of nails in New England have unanimously agreed to stop their works daring the greater part of the months of July and AngnsL The reason alleged is tbat heavy stocks of nails have accumulated, the market prios has thereby been crowded down below tbe manufacturing cost. A similar action on the part of tbe Pittsburg manufactu rers tends to show that over production is confined to New Eogland alone, Ravages of tbe Storm ULIng.
