Turn seem* to be an epldemto of jail break
ing sweeping all over Georgia. We have al
ready noted above a case to Perry and one in
Calhoun oonnty, and now come two more—one
at Boms and one at Newnan. The Borne
Courier saysj
Attxxttto Boxak Jail —A desporate attempt
to escape from jail by overpowering the officers,
was made by persona from Haralson connty, on
last Thursday. The time selected was when the
jailor, Mr. Jenkins, in ciiupany with Mr. W.
1). Kellet, the sheriff of Chattooga county, en
tered the jail to remove a person from that
oonnty. As soon as the outer door was opened,
tho prisoners, who tad removed the fastenings
from the inner door, made a rash upon tbs
officers, who, though nnprepared for the onset,
resisted it with such foroe as to prevent their
etoape, and after a severe struggle, to com
pletely overpower and return them to their cells.
And tho Kewnan Herald says:
In the west cell of tho jail were confined
Charles Albright, Wo. Albright, Crayton Hicks
and —— Coleman—the three former charged
with murder and tho latter with larceny—all
son! here from Carroll connty for safe keeping.
The walls of tho jail of this connty wore com
posed of two thicknoases of brick, timber twelve
inches broad and two inches thick, a spiko driv
en every square inch, and ordinary ceiling, to
tal thickness at least two foct. It was thought
to bo a matter of impossibility for men supplied
yrith good tool* to escape in less than one
mouth, owing to the cumber and riza of the
nails driven through the wood. Hcnco we sup-
pens that the jailer did not ex«mine the bed
ding of the prisoners for evidence of stiempt to
break through the wall, aa often as ho other
wise would. This wa* natural. Our citizens
were astonished, however, on Sunday morning
when they learned that daring the previous
night Ohstlos Albright, Crayton Hicks and
Coleman had escaped. On going to tbe jail, it
was discovered that Ihe prisoner* named had
been supplied, by some friends outside, with aa
iron spike ma or fight inches long, a small file
and the steel blade of a ctae knife, which latter
had been converted into an excellent saw. With
the spike they removed three pieces of uprioht
ceiling, and to their great joy found the 12x2
inch umber entirely decajed from dry rot,
•are an ooaaeiccal thin strip. These prisoners
had nothing to do but to pick out the rotten
wood, saw the sound portions, cirefaUjr re
move the bricks and make theirex-L Inasmuch
as tbe ocll is in the upp<r story, they must bsve
some means by which to make the descent, and
hence tore their blankets into strips and twisted
them into a strong rope. Coleman being the
smallest of the three, made his descent first and
went aero** the street and proonred a ladder,
and pUoed it properly to aid the others to de-
eoend. The hole through which these men
mads their eeoape measured in the clear, be
tween the points of nails, 8x13 inche*. In this
condition Bandar morning. Mr. Kuight, the

bright remaining in the oeli from which tt*e

Many old settlers, our intelligent men, will tell
you that it ia “a water spoat’’--others, that “a |

from tbe Facifio keep collecting, and some pby-

when the rain does fall, a flood is the result.
