kinds of oil; fata aro employed.
The production of cotton eeed oil has been
steadily increasing, and large exportations of
tbe oil and cake are annoaily made from New
Orleans to England, Franoe and other European
countries. In Europe the cotton seed cake It

Trying tbe Strength of Horses.
Several yean ago, in the pelmy days of the
I happy put, when corn cribs and barns groaned
beneath the weight of the now lees abandant
grain, there lived in tbe neighborhood of Stone
Creek Ohoreh, In Twiggs eonnty, a good old
farmer; he had two hardy sons of the ages of
twelve and fourteen years respectively, who did
a considerable portion of the ploughing on the
farm, and occasionally (in the old gentleman**
absence) they would amnae themselves by run
ning horse rases, jumping ditches, etc , each
one believing ble hone a little the best at any
thing. One day after running a short race,
and Jerry's horse ooming out a little ahead of
Johns horse; John says to Jerry: “If old
Dobbins can beat Ball tanning. Ball can beat
him pulling.” “No he can’t,” was the quick
reply, and not having their “geer” convenient
they decided the beet vny of trying their
strength was to tie tbeir horses' tails together
and cause them to pall in opposite directions.
Therefore, tbe boys dismounted end did, in a
very substantia! manner, fsbten tbe hones’
tails together, and taming their heads in oppo
cito directions and each supplying himself with
a whip, mounted bis horse end commenced ap
plying the whip in good earnest, tte horses
came to a dead set; after a few cracking of
joints something gave wav, each horse pitched
upon his bead, and ditto Jerry and John. John

supplies the yoaig plants with the best liquid
and gaaeoui food, at tbe most critical period,
and consequently enable the plants to develop*-
alonter .terns, an.i more perfect and nnmerons
leaves; for it appears to be well established,
that the sooner the plant escapes from the state
of transition in_ which It derives its food from
the seed as well as from the soil and atmos
phere, the sooner wilt it? organa for txtraoung
t(a food from the air and the soil be developed,
the more vigorous will l»i thmr growth, and the
more tdiienc their nte in the prooeas of veget

Ootton seel cake insures also a better supply
ot motamro to tbe plant because it preserves tbe
power of absorbing from twici to ten times as
nioch atmospheno moisture aa tbo finest soils.
8. Ootton seed cake is greatly superior to
farm-yard manure in soluble organic matter.
