A^d fertile thought and wi#e discovery joined:
Wlfb myriad-banded giants workshops manned;
Whole contine nt# with iron finger# spanned;

And wide-#prcid nations set in close array.
Bnt more than this material go'd we show;
Rome nhstea of tbU ago reveal the clow
Of philanthropic fire, in stead? blaze.
As it flamed up, in apostolic days
Chrlri’a kingdom grows; missions have earned light
To darkest realms, and scattered heathen niche;
Nations nr« borb of savage tribes:—God’s word.
In «v®ry dime and every tongue, la heard:

Though thus far victors, boasting is not meet.
For while war li#t#. no victory is complete;
And in thi* conflict with the potent world.
Not seldom is the Chriitian banner fnrled.
The scoffer’s sneer Ibe coward heart alarms:

Fatal Railroad Accident.
A negro man, probably sixty-five years of
ft^e, wan killed by the down day passenger
train cn the Macon and Western Railroad, on
Friday evening, some six or eight miles this
aide of Griffin, noder the following oiroam
stances: The train wav running at its usual
speed, when tbe engineer discovered tbe man
standing near tbo track, ao near indeed that tbe
train conld not have parsed without knocking
him down. He immediately blew thewbiatle,
when the negro, instead of getting away from
tho traok, ateppod upon it, a 1 if to go to tbe
other side. It was then too late for the engi
neer to slacken speed, and the man was struck
by tho engine, and knocked high fn the air,
falling at a distance of twenty feet from where
he stood when siiack.
Tbe train was stopped a? soon as possible
and backed to the scene of tbe tragedy; but it
was too late to do any good. The unfortunate
negro was dead—having, in all probability,
been instantly killed by the blow. His body,
however, was not badly mutilated, as he was
thrown eff the tra*k and the train did sot pass
over him. A train hand was sent back to
Griffin to notify ibe agent of that place of the
accident, in order that the remains might be
properly disposed of.
The old man lived in a cabin, within a ban
dred yards of where ho was killed. He bad an
ax on his shoulder at the time, and was evi
dently going across the track to chop some
wood.
