Telegraph & Messenger. THUR8DAY MORNING, JULY 24, 1873 THE GEORGIA PRESS. At lb* recent oommemoement of Ootfoga 8(0 Marie, Montreal, Canada, Jes?ph DaUnnoy, of Savannah, carried off the flrat prizes In excel lence, diligence, physique, and algebra, and second In merit in duvertaUon. Fa mm Callwa*, of Atlanta, has gone on visit to Ireland. The Columbus San, of Taeaday, has this: A xzoBO woman staffed herself so fall of two o'olock Sanday dinner that she died before sapper time. She ate a hearty breakfast, took a whopping dinner at her hoase at noon, went to a neighbor's hoove and piled in another din ner at two o'olock. The matter of astonishment is how she ooold hare lived that long. Txa Baptist Sandsy-achool Convention of North Georgia will meet In Sammerville to morrow. There wore 112 interments in Atlanta last month. Speaking of the Confederate monament at Atlanta, the Herald aays t We aoderstand, however, that a oontract has been consummated with the Stone Monntain Company to furnish granite to complete the ahaft cr body of the monament, and that the Memorial A's >cuLon will commence work afreah at a very early date. Though oar information was not antbentic, we sincerely hope that w< were informed aright. The Griffin Kews of Tuesday says ;* Oa yesterday George Gastello, Etq., from Henry county, brought in twenty bales of cot ton, his last year's crop. People stood in amazement as they saw several leads of the Maple driving np the street, the merchants brushed np their oouatera, the lawyers gazed from their offices, and newspaper men were efr* • culating around freely jnat like they had money. Some were of the opinion that the fall of the year had oom<*. and others looked upon it as the atant courier of the old time xnUlenlam of peaoe, plenty and prosperity. Griffia Is marching steadily forward toward her dealiny, whioh jnst now seems to be a new theatre. 8pan!ding ooanly colored people aro going to have a oamp meeting at an early day. Tnx Lumpkin Independent has this crop Item: The crops are suffering very ranoh for want of rain, and the complaints of dry weather are heard all over the county. Corn in “firing" very rapidly and will be seriontly injured aniens » rain falls in a few days. ScMrcn oonnty will organize a Grange of Pa trons to-morrow. A Gjunoe bos been organized at Conyers. A dispatch to the Atlanta Gonstilntion from IiAmesviUo, the 22J, says: A personal renoontre took place to day here between H. J. Lund and W. P. Basny. Lind vrwi shot and severely wounded. 8eabe McDow ell. colored, wav also shot during the fracas. The difficulty originated from the attempt of Bassy to arrest Land. On Saadlay morning three diamond rings were stolen from an Augusta lady, and on Tuesday morning the door bell of the residence from which the rings wero carried off was rang, and upon the door being opened the rings were discovered lying upon the door maL No one was in sight. Augusta has just concluded a oensns of her own, and counts up a population of 19,083. The Atlanta Constitution has the following with reference to the Blodgett defalcation: The Legislature, at its Iaet session, appointed a joint committee of both branches of the As sembly to meet daring the recess and patiently investigate the defalcation of Foster Blodgett. That ooromittee has been in session in this city two week«, and adjourned yesterday. The pre- vlons Legislature, by appropriate committee had investigated his'matter and found Blod gett's default to bo considerably more than the amount of his offioial bonnd as Superintendent of the Western and Atlantie Railroad, and upon their finding, a judgment has been issued against his bondsmon for the fall amount of the bond— #120,000. These bondsmen and Foster Blodgett have resisted the parmont of the execution in every way they could. The case has been be fore the Supremo Court, and recently the sham pardon granted by Judge Conley while he was filling the Gubernatorial chair and playing the part of Chief Executive, has been nrgod before the Superior Court ns a bar to the en forcement of the said judgement against the securities. In all these moves the courts have decided against Foster Blodgett and his securities, holding them to the payment of the bond. One spools! point made by the secu rities was that many of the items oompoaing the aooonut whioh tho previous Legislative committee had found duo wero erroneous—alle ging that they wero ablo to show that to bo the case, bnt were denied a hearing or tho privilege ohintroducing testimony, etc., and it was particularly to moot this objection that the committee which has jnst adjourned waa rafved nod held their late meeting. While holding this pension, they opened their doors wide, summon ing every wit news desired, and fully examining every point or question ralsod by tho defend ants or their counsel, nod remained in suasion till they said they wero through and had no other witness or matter to introdnoe, and had presented their whole case. The committee will not oome to a conclusion—will not prepare a report—till tho Legislature meets. Their ad journment yesterday waa to assemble again a few days before tho meeting of the General Assembly, till which time their conclusions will not be known. All we CAn now say is, that they have given n patient and full hearing to tho de" fonso to their entire satisfaction. Tax duel crop has been unusually largo this yoar. Tho lAtost one on the tapis comes through the Atlanta Herald. A correspondent writing to that paper of yesterday, from Opelika, Ala., saye: It appears that soon after tho doso of the commitment trial of young Hooper, a Air. Wad- doll, who is in some way oonoeoted with the Hooper family, wrote a communication to the Columbus Sun, iu which he made serious charges against the character of the late Tbos. Fbtllipn. Among other things, he charged that Mr. Thomas Phillips had been turned ont of the* church for seducing one of his church sisters, and that at the time of his death he was not a member of the Methodist church. This charge of Mr. WAddell was denied by the officers of the ohuroh referred to. They stated that while certain charges had been made against Mr. Phillips, they were rot sus tained. and be has not been turned out of com munion with the church. It appears that Mr. Thomas Phillips has a brother and several nephews living in Atlanta. This article in the Sun evidently escaped their notioe, until within the past few days a copy was sent to Mr. Thomas J. Phillips, who keeps a family grocery store in Atlanta. As soon av this young man read the article, we are informed that he heoAtne very indignant, and through his friend, Col. , scuta peremptory demand to Wad dell to retyiot or fl^ht. Up to this tixno we do not kuow the result, bet will send you tho facts as soon as obtained. The Herald adds editorially: Upon receiving the above letter a Herald reporter waa dispatched to Mr. Phillips* place of business. Finding him absent he made inquiry of bis brother, who was in charge of his busi ness, as to his whereabouts. He was informed that Mr. Phillips left cn Saturday in company with a friend. He did not know bis brother's business abroad. He only heard of him once since his departure. All that our reporter could gather from that letter was, that Mr. P. was in Columbus on Monday. From what our reporter learnt daring the interview he is satisfied that Mr. P. is off for the purpose of settling the un pleasantness between Colonel Waddell and him' aelf. We learn from another source that Col. Waddell has positively refused to retract any thing. Tbt, Colambna Sun of Hat night has this to say upon the subject of the duello: “The probabilities on good authority last night were that the affair would be Fettled. Rumors are plentiful." W^ see Mr. J. Shecut, of At lanta, registered at the Konkin House, and con sequently presume that he is Mr. Phillips*friend. He has been indirectly engaged in one or two ••affaires" already.
