special arrangements with regard to sheet
music. They carry with them orders for four
nqaare Grand Cniekering pianos, which look*
pretty glaring In this hot, dnll, July weather,
bat it is, nererthelem, just so. There are fonr
parties who want the fineet planoe made, and
who hare the money to pay for them. Guess

will be seen ihst a memoir of the late Hon.
Union Btephecs Is In oonrse of preparation. A
faithful record of the life of this distinguished
gentlemen will furnish the history of one of the
most Important periods of Georgia, and, there
fore, will be a ralnabie contribution to the his
toric literature of the Btate. Mr. Stephens
figured conspicuously in the brents, especially
of the twelve or fifteen years immedistely pre
ceding his death, and a memoir of his life

At the iuitanoe of Hon. A. EL Stephens, GoL

Tn* Bioox Tube.—Attention is called to the
advertisement of Mr. W. A. Huff, who offers
240 oasks of bacon aides on time to merchants
and planters, who oan give good paper. This
bacon Is offered at Louisville prices, freight and
eipen/es added.
Mr. Half reooived yesterday 207 casks of
baoon. During tbo month of Jniy he has re
ceived 500 oasks—500,000 pounds. Ha sold 50
casks yssterday. This Is a great deal of meat
for ouo house to handle—more, indeed, than
Hoff ever handled before in tbe same length of
Ume; but his trade demanded it, and one of
bis rules of business is to keep in bis line any
amount of goods for whiob there Is likely to be
a demand. II# finds little profit in boiug out
of anything his customers want, and as it is
cheaper to buy by the train load than by the car
load, ha adopts tbo former oonrse.
Merchants and planters will find it to their
interest to oonsult his advertisement.

bat heaved by the raid Green, was np for trial
yesterday. The testimony detailed tbe eircum
stances of tha c&ae anbstaniially as sat forth in

that she wet not (he man they were looking for,
but anothor fellow entirely. It turned out that
the prosecution in this action had mistaken the
gentle Miss Emma for tbe landlord of the
establishment, when In fact Miss Bailie Thomp
son is the individual who hectors over the
ranobs. Accordingly, tbe warrant against Miss
Emma was distal-sod, and one was issued
against Miss Bailie, and that accomplished
young lady reposed last night in tho oonnty jail,
baing unable to give bond that she would be

THE MII.ITAKT PREMIUM.
The Premium Increiwed — Entry Fees Abut
tailed.
As soon as it lied beon agreed between the
City Council and the State Agricultural Society
to bold tbe next Stale Fair in thie city, in order
to offer inducements for the people of this and
other Ststoe to oomo to the Fair and bring their
stock, prodaote and manufactures for exhibi
tion, tho City Council offered a number of spe
cial premiums that aro more liberal than any
over atralliarly offered before in this or any
other Southern Slate. Among these premiums
was one of five hundred dollars for the beet
drilled military oomptny, ten per cent, on the
premium to be paid os entrance fee by oach
competing company.
This was admitted, by all tbe military compa
nies in ths State, to be a very liberal indaoement,
bnt there were some who objected to tbe en
trance fee. Some companies, wo learn, acta
ally declined, on this account, to compete for
the premium.
At iis meeting on Tuesday night ths City
Connoli again had this matter under considers
tion and made most important changes in it.
Tho entranoe feo is now totally abolished, and
the premium inoreased from five hundred to
■even hundred and fifty dollars. Certainly this
ebon Id give satisfaction to every oompany in
tha State, and induce them all to compete for
!L At any rate, it brings tha matter down to
good drilling for a handsome sum of money.
This notion of Connoli pats a new phase npon
the matter entirely, and we hope it will be snlil-
olent inducement to bring every oompany in
the State to the fair, and as many from other
Stats* as may see fit to come. The premium
Is open to the world; bnt It would seem a little
bard to have it go oat of the Slate.
A mew mm w,
And at Cnrelees Poet.
It is oot often that we are called npon to no
tice. a piece of musio whioh is so eminently of
Southern production os is the one before us,
joat reoeivod from Messrs. Guilford, Wood 4
Os., entitled “Dove’s First Dream." The words
■re by Charles W. Buhner, of Atlanta; the
music by Mr. A. B. Knapp, leader of the At
lanta Mozart Society, and the publishers are
Messrs. Guilford, Wood A Co., of Macon and
Atlanta.
The oomposer has done his dnty in this mat
ter, for he has given a very sweet melody, whioh
will beoome popular, if our musio loving people
will only try the *ong. Tbo publishers have
also done well in bringing it ont in good style.
Bnt we aro compelled to soold oar friend
Hubner a tittle; not simply bectuso we have
room to soold, bnt because be deeerves It. Hub-
oer is a clever pool, os the reading public well
fccows. His thoughts ore poetic, and he under
stands, better than most people, the mechani
eol requirements of verse; but the latter ho
has wofully disregarded In writing this song.
We quota a few lines to show what we mean:
“For tn the soul forever fair,
Some holy image dwells serene,
Whose fondly cheriabod feature* wear
Tbs tender light of love's first dream.
“Oh. light may be tbe dreams that awing
Their plaices around the heights of fame;
And sweet may be the dreams that bring
Tns day* cf cbddboed back again."
Now Habner know* that “serene” and
“dream" do not rhyme together; neither do
“fame'' and “again.” And these are only two
examples from the tong. There is anothsr
equally bed. For instance, he mokes “dream' 1
rhyme with “sheen." Thee* all oocur in a song
of twenty-four lines.
We claim that, while we are not a poet—at
least not enough so to injure oar appetite for
beef and aabbsge—if we were to pull off our
ooel and oomo down to tough work for an hour
or two, we oould have produced better rhyme*
then the one* quoted, and have still preserved
t]m and harmony of the verse. Habner
oould have done the some thing, and should
have done It, rather than let a song, bearing his
name, go before the world with saoh blights
upon its beauty.
A let* from «■« Srrlen.
There is a party of Meeoo gentlemen who
claim to be en j eying themselves at Indian
Spring. They are seldom heard from, and
then only under conditions of greet emergency.
They profees to be so occupied with pieixore-
making, that they have no time to devote
oorrespoodeooe with their friends at home.
Bat thing* are not going as well with them
as they would bavs us stay-at-homera think.
They are actually suffering for the ocmaaonest
necemaries of life. Just think of it. A man
goes sway from Ida home—pays railroad fare
going and returning—pay big hotel and other
bills while away, and yet is unhappy amid It all,
simply because he cannot have what a nickel
would easily pnrohass at home. Witness lbs
following note reoeived by a Msoon merchant
yesterday morning:
Dxu Ed: Fleaee send me a pair of shoe
strings—such ass gentleman would tike to wear
with low-quarter shoe*. I have tried twice to
get a pair through and , and you have
given them old naira cuds.
Yoon, etc..
Now, if that does not ahowto what straits
men at the spring* may be redneed, we would
like to know what does, dost think of it. Here
is a Mioon man at tha spring*, guzzling mine
ral water and aodi cocktails, eating fried chick
en and country beef; promenading with the
girls by day and dancing with them at night
no duns to annoy him; no loafers to intrude
upon his tims; no heat and dost of tbe city to
worry him; no hunting for cool places; no
work, no nothing to let “a wan of tronble roll
across his peaoeful breastand yet amid all
this beatific existenoe, that man is suffering—
yea, aotnally suffering! But, snffering for
what ? For a pair of shoestrings.’ Shade of
the Immortal St. Crispin, can such things be,
and men, still in arrant disregard for the fatee,
oonllone to go to the spring* ?
Bnt that Is not oIL As Queen Solomon sold
to the King of Sbebi, the half has not been
told. Tbe same letter quoted above, concludes
with the following:
“P. B.—No draw here."
Now we are free to confess that we are inno-
oent of the ways of men who are so lost to all re
gard for personal oomfort as to go to the springs,
bnt we appeal to an enlightened and intelligent
pnblio—we appeal to all men of understanding
minds—we appeal to all people of intelligence,
regardleas of age or sex—we appeal to
Christian world to know if any circumstances
can be oonceived of, dreamed of, or imagined
whiob oonid, by any sort of contingency, sur
round a humane and tender hearted man with
such a compact of disoomfort and nnbappiness
as la expressed in those three monosyllabio
words: “No draw Asra” Just let any reason-
able man imagine himself in the place of the
writer of that note, and then, if be oan, oon-
oeive what bis feelings must be. We have no
doubt it is a worse type of diseise than cholera
is, and it all comes of going to spend a few
' days at the springs.
We comfortable people, who are enjoying
ourselves at home, cannot fatly sympathize
with our lees fortunate friend:; still we can find
time, amid our pleasures, to heave them a peer
ing sigh, and hope that they will get over it
after awhile.

The Vital Drain It is necessary to tho health
of the body that its exhausted and refused psrti-
oles should be carried off by the excretory organs,
and it is equally necessary that the waste matter
thus expelled should be replaced by new elements
derived from digested and aeaimUsted food. It
evident, therefore, that go:d digestion* and perfect
assimilation are essential to bodily vigor; and
ie because Hostetter'e Stomach Bitters powerfully
assist these processes, that It Is regarded by tbe
intelligent classes, whose opinions are founded on
observoUoc, os the only absolnte specific for dys
pepsia and its attendant ills, at present known,
When tbe system, either from constitutional causes,
overwork, exoest, anxiety, or actual disease, is
on unnaturally relaxed oondttiou, something more
than iti exhausted particles passes through the
pores. Vitality leaks through these voutages. El
ements which should remain in tbo blood and en
rich it are evolved, and that fluid becomes thou
watery and incapable of removing the solids of the
body as fist as they decay. The consequences are
emaciation, debility, netvonenees, loea of spirits,
and a general, or perhaps a rapid, decline of all
powers of life. It la in cases like this that the re
storative properties of Hostetter's Bitters are most
conspicuous. The first two or three doses some
times produce a change in the feelings and aspect
of the invalid that is perfectly astonishing, and by
a persevering use of this superlative vegetable
tonic and alterative, the vital drain is sure to be
arrested, the strength reinstated, the fiesli restored,
tbe constitution reinforced, and the brain relieved
of the dond that obsenred it.
Pkbsonai,.—Editor Telegraph and Messenger,
Macon, Ga., says: “Wo have tested its virtues
personally, and know that for dyspepsia, bilious,
nesa, and throbbing hoadacbe it ia tbe best medi
cine tbe world evor saw. We have tried forty oth
er remedies before Simmon-,' Liver Regulator, but
none of them gave ue more than temporary re
lief; but tbe Regulator not only relieved, bnt
cured us.” .
No DzcEmoN There is no deception in Dr:
Prioo’s Special Flavorings and Cream Baking Pow

thin others sold for the same size, and every

ban 5.
Thomas County, Ga., July 13,1873.
We take pleasure in certifying we saw the
Wbisen&at Cotton Caterpillar Destroyer applied to
numerous stalks of cotton upon Wm. B. Harrall's
plantation yesterday evening after sun down, in
ten minutes after which a very heavy ram felt upon
it, and we saw nothing more of the cotton until
morning. Upon examination this morning we
we found that the rain had not washed it off, and
that all the caterpillar* that were upon tbe cotton
were dead and in a dying condition We are very
favorably impressed with it, and are satisfied Tf
properly applied, it will give perfect satisfaction.

This is to certify I applied the Whiaenant Cotton
Caterpillar Destroyer to the cotton upon two bot
tom places on my plantation, near this city, a few
days since, which had quite a number of oaterpil-
lais npon it. and that u killed all tbe caterpillars
that were upon the cotton without injury to the
plant. I am well pleased with it, and am fully
satisfied if it is properly applied it will kill all the
caterpillars upon the cotton without injury to the
plant, and that one hand can apply it to four or
five acres per day.
