A Smart I.IMIr srnaUui M America*.
Oar sister city, Americas, la a placid, even- |
going plaoe, and does not very often step to the
front with anything like a sensation. Lately,
however, she has ran oat of the old grooves,
sod has found something out of the common to
talk abont, although she seems to have endeav
ored to keep it all to herself. The facts, as we
have been able to asoeiiein them, are substan
tially as follows:
Messrs. Barlow A Callaway "were doing a
thriving mercantile business in that city. At
least they knew that they were selling a good
many goods, at prioes which allowed them a
margin, and were surprised, a short time sinee,
to find that they were nnable to meet their ob
ligations. They did not understand the matter
at atL They were satisfied that the amount of
goods they were selling ongbt to have pnt them
in eaay circumstances, and given them some
spending money beside. They ccn'd not see
through the mystery st all at the first glance,
and were puzzled over it no little.
These gentlemen bad in tbelr employment a
yonng man named W. A- Palmer. The morals
of this yonng man were irreproachable. In
fact they were on the highpresaare style. He
abhorred bar and billiard rooms, never was
known to swear an oath or ntter an nntrntb,
and went to Sunday school srith a regularity
which induoed parents of baddish sort of boys
to bold him np as a paragon of all that was
strictly moral and genteel for their boys to
imitate. This model yonng man was book,
keeper for the firm, had charg6 of their bank
ing business, and handled all the money that
wts received or paid oat. There was no limit
to the confidence that his employers had In
hint. They trusted him as one who bad not
the power to do a wrong.
When Messrs. Barlow A tftllawsy found their
business in snch an embarrassed condition—not
having money enongh to meet tbelr obligations
—they opened their eyes wide, and for the first
time In months, began to look into tbs very
heart of their own affairs. An Investigation
disolosed to them the astounding fact, that Ihe
model yonng man, to whom they had intrusted
the whole of their affairs, bad been carrying on
a system of defalcation, which bad well nigh
rained his employers. They scarcely believed
It at first, bnt a persevering investigation fas
tened the oonvlotion so firmly upon their minds
that they were forced to believe it—to believe,
not only that their traded clerk bad been de
manding them, bnt that he had setnally de
frauded them ont of the enormous ram of fif
teen thonsand dollars. They wore surprised—
astounded by the revelation.
Their next step was to charge the crime upon
him, acd ho admitted It like nu honest yonng
man, and like a model yonng man, proposed a
compromise. The gentlemen acceded to the
proposition, and the yonng man returned them
three thonsand dollars of their money which be
had stolen. A brother of bis afterwards found
that he bad seventeen bnndred dollars more in
bis possession acd made him !nm that over also.
That ended the matter. The yonng man was
permitted to go be a model for yonng California
youths, sb he had been for Americas young
men. What he did with the money that he stole
has not been ascertained. All that his employ-
ers know Is that they are now sadly straitened
for want of it. One of Ihe gentlemen is in a
rained oondition financially. The other has
ample means outside of his business, and suf
fers less.
Narrow Esoirt.—A few afternoons ago a lit
tie daughter of OoL Uangham ventured In the
yard of Mr. Hertz, and had started np the
steps of his residence, when a vicious and fero
cious dog on the lot seized and dragged her
down (he steps and somo distance into tho yard.
Before he had time, however, to Injurs the
child very seriously, Mr. Waller Adams hast -
sued to the rescue, and by his timely presence
mod courageous conduct sncooedcd, with great
difficulty, in beating the dog off. Too much
praise cinnot.be bestowed on Mr. Adams for
his conduct on this occasion, for by his timely
action he has certainly saved the life of little
Ltzz'.e Uangham.
People, we suppose, have the right to keep
ferocious dogs for the protection of their prem
ises, but certainly they have no right to allow
those dogs loo wide a range even on (heir own
premises. A vicious dog may not bo allowed

Yesterday was tho beginning of the rcgnlsr
monthly term of tbo Connty Oonrt. Somo fif
teen civil cases were disposed of. Owing to
the absence of attorneys quits a number of
criminal oases had to bo postponed.
Tho only criminal case disposod of was one
against Ben Sanders, colored, charged with
stealing. Ben was oanght in tho very “honr
and article" of stealing, by some three or fonr
witnesses. The goods were taken from him
and ns was bronght np for trial, and theso wit
nesses appeared against him. Notwithstanding
the case was so plain, the connsol demanded
jury. The conseqnenoo of this was a delay of
proceedings tor abont three weeks, daring which
time tbs prisoner has been lying in jail at the
expense of tho connty and to bis own serions
discomfort. Yesterday (he case came np; (he
evidence was as above stated, and Sanders was
fined fifty dollars and costs or six months in
the chain-gang. Tho costs include about twen
ty-one dollars in jail and jury fees. So much
for demanding a jury. Sanders asked until two
o’closk to-day to Taise the money to pay hia fine
and costs, which was accorded.
Ont of sixty-five criminal cases which have
been disposed of by this court, this is the only
case in which a jury was demanded.
The oonrt will bo in session all this week
hearing civil cases and disposing of snch crimi
nal cases as may be ready for a hearing.
